It used to make more sense for me to buy pro packs, but that was a long time ago. Now I go a la carte and save millions a year(idr). It used to be tough for me not to buy a pro pack because I wanted so much stuff in the bundle. But nowadays I just one one, maybe 2 pieces.

  • Oso3DOso3D Posts: 15,116

I can't say enough how useful Ninive 6 pro pack was on sale. I think it was $20? And I got a really nifty hairdo, an Arthurian outfit, a decent cape, the weird but neat Etheria outfit, a seaweed-strewn hair, and a few other things.

Granted, if two hairs and two oufts were sold for $20 with nothing else, I probably would have bought it.

  • larsmidnattlarsmidnatt Posts: 4,511

Yep when the pro pack is 65 bucks, and you only want $20 worth of stuff it makes more sense to buy items indivudually. That's the boat I've been in a lot. But then ago I have hundreds of outfits that are either underused or never used. Could use some more G3F hair, so that is one of the things I plan to get when I get home in 30 minutes, well add 15 minutes to feed the dogs. So By 6pm eastern I should be in Daz Studio rendering for funs. (going to put real projects on the side for a bit, close to burning out...)

But how are the PA's supose to determine "what the vendors want to make (their art) vs. what the customer base wants (their art)"? The forum customer base only makes up roughly 10% of the customer base.

I don't think they were suggesting it was possible, just saying it would be interesting. I agree with you, forum users are a very small percentage of buyers. So we aren't a good representation.

I keep saying PAs should try kickstarter.

People want it enough to plunk money down? THEN you make it.

Although that is an interesting idea with merit and might work, personally I would not pay in advance for a product because I do not know what it will be like when it is done.  The vision in my head is often not even vaguely close to the vision in somebody else's head, and I would be afraid of being unhappy with the result.  If I can see the product prior to purchase, rather than after purchase, then I know for certain I am happy, or I can choose a different product, or simply not purchase if it is not what I was looking for.  Even if the artist is talented and has a known history of top-notch products and produces a perfect product, it might simply not be the one you were expecting.  Not trying to discourage anybody from this idea, simply providing input as to why some of us might not take that option even if it is presented.

Sure, not everyone will, but that's kind of how Kickstarter works.

And, frankly, given how much people have backed games and lots of other stuff with VERY high failure rates, I'd feel pretty good backing a Kickstarter from some of the big players -- while it might not be exactly what I expected, I know they'll produce something very cool, regardless.

I don't think the kick-starter model would work. I still places the all the onus on the PA. I think a more successful approach would be to reach out to a PA with an idea. Ideally, someone who has made similar items in the past with your product suggestion. If they are receptive, have pictures and/or drawings ready. If it's something you really want, ask how much it would cost to comission the item for your sole use, possibly negotiate a lower rate if they think it's something they could sell.

kickstarter is a lot of work too. I actually can relate to the PA's that say "and we also have to make awesome promo art" and how much time that adds to product creation. I could only imagine managing a kickstart campaign kinda goes against the art part of the brain...(and art time and stuff)

I have to agree with the sentiment. A Item has less than 3 seconds on average to capture my attention, and about 15 seconds to hold it. If the Promo art isn't "up to snuff", there is a good chance I'll pass on the item. There have been a couple items that initially I passed on, as the promo art didn't do it for me, but I picked up at a later date, and was surprised at how much better the Item was once I used it. A good example of this is  was Ehsa's Holiday Cactus. I'm usually on the hunt for house plants as well as other plants&trees, I liked it, but wasn't sold by the promos, Eventually a really good PC+ sale came along, and I decided to go for it. I was pleasantly surprised that it rendered much better than I thought it would.

A quality product will keep customers comming back, but Amazing Promo art is what gets new customers, and is almost if not more important as the item itself.

As far a kickstart... I'm not sure, I would think Patreon  might be a better fit though, but I doubt I'd invest in something that isn't immediately ready....

maybe DAZ should start their own version of Kickstarter.  Have one for individual stuff (like body shapes, skins, hair styles) and have one for themed stuff that merchants wanna team up for.

PS.  How do you sign up for these deals that everyone keeps going on about?  I mean a bundle for $20.00 is pretty cool but I have no idea where to look for that....

Not sure which ones were referred to, but if you sign up for the email newsletter you get LOTS of notifications of sales (sorry, can't remember where the newsletter signup is), and you can also subscribe to http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/21605/flash-sale-alerts , which is just random people posting to the thread whenever they see a flash sale.

Agreed, promo art can definitely help or hinder a purchase.  I've seen some items that really didn't look that great, but I suspect they might be better than the promos lead one to believe because the promo looked super-rushed... but I'm just not sure, so I've avoided them just in case that's the best the product can do.  Usually the promo art is pretty good though on average.

I didn't see much in this bundle beside base figure and hair that I would ever use. The problem with bundles is clothing contnet.  I wish we could build our own bundles. I never render fantasy or sexy, so that leaves most of the outfits to be sort of useless. But I could use the hair and skins. Being able to mix and match our own bundles would help some of us who want to buy more- but not in the particular items included with the character.

In this case, Bethany's goods are sort of fantasy/sexy modern.

OK., those are good examples. Now let's say you made three different static duck props all based off a single mesh (I personally like the top $12, $26, and $29 ones) and sold them in a set called Bath Ducks for $2 or $3. Would so few people buy them that it wouldn't be worth the time spent? Would it really be better to include one duck in a $12 Bath Prop set with loofahs, brushes, and soap and hope that anyone who wants a rubber duck will spring for that?

Why would I possibly want to only charge $2 dollars for it,  they're obviously worth $25!  Turbosquid knows what 3D assets are worth!

seriously,  if I packed up 10 unique small props like the duck or the pizza slice,  less than a buck a piece and sold the collection for $8.99,   if DAZ would even bother accepting it for the store ( don't forget we PAs got to spend time making kick a$$ promos for these things as well.  how much money would it make?  what would these ten items be to target the max numbers of customers?  how many customers will put it on their wishlist to get the set a few month from now at 60-70-80-90%  off where that $8.99 has now dwindle down to .87cents for the PA's share.    Oh yah, we'll be  jumping all over that.

It would be interesting to see a Venn diagram between what the vendors want to make (their art) vs. what the customer base wants (their art).  I doubt there is as much overlap as vendors think.  Most of them are still in the If I build it, they will buy it mindset.

I buy based on whether or not it is something I need.  I'll give you an example.  Over at 'Rosity there is a 1957 Greyhound Scenicruiser.  $30.00  The vendor rarely (once a year or so) puts stuff on sale.  I have been looking for one of these for almost 2 years - As soon as the site comes back up, it is going into the cart and I can redo several scenes (along with the new bus terminal that showed up over there)

If it is something I need, I bite the bullet and don't worry about the cost.  But I am not buying something that doesn't actually have an improvement over what I already own.  Which eliminates most of the stuff sold at DAZ.  I simply don't see a fundamental improvement over what I could get 8 - 9 years ago.

..two years, for me it's been over five (and part of the reason I considered modelling). Still waiting for a GMC THD 5000 series as well as a "Fishbowl" transit bus (like was used in the film Speed) .

..does anyone know what happened to Ness?  the last items released was Floor Scales which was over five years ago. I was hoping he'd come out with a, accurate 9' concert grand piano.  While there si a fairly nice freebie piano available knowing Ness' eye for detail it would be exquisits (and like the Harpsichord, probably have a rigged keyboard). Even the ones on Turbosquid for 100$ or more are not rigged.

Would also love to see a totally authentic pipe organ like one would see in a cathedral;. There is a fellow on DA who does wonderful 3D models of pipe organs for a company that builds them but alas he mentioned he doesn't have the time to perform commission work (I already inquired)..

I actually cringed when I saw the word "Business" in some of those outfits. Necklines where the waistlines are supposed to be- seriously? Show up like that any of the places where I was a manager and your butt would be sent back home so fast you'd wonder why you bothered to get out of bed. We need vendors to be practical- if you're doing an outfit with a plunging neckine, then simply provide the morphs to close / button up the front. Instead, we're getting images of how to take it OFF, pulling it down to expose the breasts. (Not necessarily this site.)  If you're going to take the time to do THAT or have plunging necklines, then increase your sales and make PRACTICAL morphs too.

I tend to agree with this as the general rule I use with my renders is it's cringe-factor if I were to show it to my mother!  wink  I try to keep everything as modest as I can, as much as possible (I still do the odd 'provocative' render once in a while for fun).  That's why I love this dress (http://www.daz3d.com/garden-party-dress) because of the one morph that I look for in everything I consider buying: 'Long'.  I don't immediately pass up a short skirt or dress (or even cutoffs) before I check the morph section.  If I can lengthen it to the knees, then it's still a viable option for me.  I may be in the vast minority, but I still think that someone who doesn't give away all their secrets with how they dress can be more attractive and sexy than giving it all away to everyone who happens to look.

Yeah, I'm old fashioned, and proud of it!  laugh

I went have a look at Kickstarter,  they have very specific categories and delivery requirements,  what would 3D content like this,  even fall under?  Games, comics, movies, books/novels,  pretty straight forward,  but digital content,  where does it fit?

  • Oso3DOso3D Posts: 15,116

I'm guessing Art or Technology. But it's a good question.

It doesn't hit any of the outright restrictions, though, which is good.

..ugh the typos in my post.  Did I yet mention why I hate this software for blocking the FF spell checker?  You should not have to remember to turn the spell checker on ever time you write a comment.

...and many times it comes up with suggestions that are totally off base.

...and someone in Daz Development still needs to remove "teh" and "hte" from the dictionary as those are misspellings of "the".

So they have NO control over the content of the dictionary they are using?  That is another step in a wholly strange direction that is not forward!

But back on topic, there is a limit to just how much swim-wear and lingerie my girls need (but only 'cos I promised not to cut down on their shoes .. ;))
