3dsmax, but it's a simple mesh, so any modeling app would work. I actually do lots of simple objects in Gmax (free) since I use it often for game mods and it's very similar to 3dsmax. Then export to milkshape and then .obj.
I was curious, there are so many out there with varying degrees of user friendliness.
If everyone did start doing their own modeling and such, wouldn't that make it extremely difficult for PAs to make a living? How would a PA make a living if everyone else was making their own models? Just a thought.
If everyone did start doing their own modeling and such, wouldn't that make it extremely difficult for PAs to make a living? How would a PA make a living if everyone else was making their own models? Just a thought.
I don't think it would be an issue. I don't know exactly how long it takes to model something on average, but I seriously doubt that even if I were an expert I would be able to model the more complex things at even a fraction of the rate at which I can purchase them. And while technically most people could probably raise their own produce, it doesn't seem to happen, and we still need farmers. Everybody has different areas of expertise or choice in what they do, I don't think all the PAs are in immediate danger due to the availability of modeling applications for all of us.
People have said various forms of 'why don't you do X yourself?'
I've had not a few artists tell me I really ought to practice freehand illustration (which I'm not at all good at), because it will help with understanding composition, figures, etc. Except I have ABSOLUTELY NO INTEREST in doing that, and it's time I'm not spending doing CGI art I DO want to do.
People always tell me 'oh, if you don't build your own computer, you are THROWING AWAY YOUR MONEY. And those machines are poop!' Except I have very little grasp of hardware, looking up information is extremely confusing, I have no idea even where to start, and I can't afford to end up with several thousand dollars of burnt junk on my desk. And it would take a HUGE amount of time learning everything to put it together.
OR I could just buy a packaged system for a bit extra and know that it should work as advertized and I can return the thing if it doesn't.
I wonder how many of these people make their own paper to draw on, design their own stylus, cook up ink, hand-carve new parts for their car that they are repairing themselves, grow their own wheat to make the bread they make themselves...
..I felt the same when it came to computers.
However when 4.0 came out I was still on a very limited 32 bit system that I could barely render a single figure and simple background with. Back then to get a system powerful enough was in the realm ot 2,500$+ (usually a dedicated gamer system or custom build). Now at the time my computer hardware skills were pretty basic, like plugging a printer or monitor into a computer and installing memory in my old notebook, So I sat down to learn (taking about 18 months in my spare time) about how these things are built and research the components to make sure they were compatible with each other. This also gave me the time to save for and purchase the components I needed. In the end I saved over half the cost of a similar custom built system, and it's is still running pretty well after three years.
Crikey, since then I've been helping others who are looking to purchase or build a new system with questions they have.
Now, modelling my own content is a whole different issue which I already mentioned about here.
OK., those are good examples. Now let's say you made three different static duck props all based off a single mesh (I personally like the top $12, $26, and $29 ones) and sold them in a set called Bath Ducks for $2 or $3. Would so few people buy them that it wouldn't be worth the time spent? Would it really be better to include one duck in a $12 Bath Prop set with loofahs, brushes, and soap and hope that anyone who wants a rubber duck will spring for that?
Why would I possibly want to only charge $2 dollars for it, they're obviously worth $25! Turbosquid knows what 3D assets are worth!
seriously, if I packed up 10 unique small props like the duck or the pizza slice, less than a buck a piece and sold the collection for $8.99, if DAZ would even bother accepting it for the store ( don't forget we PAs got to spend time making kick a$$ promos for these things as well. how much money would it make? what would these ten items be to target the max numbers of customers? how many customers will put it on their wishlist to get the set a few month from now at 60-70-80-90% off where that $8.99 has now dwindle down to .87cents for the PA's share. Oh yah, we'll be jumping all over that.
If everyone did start doing their own modeling and such, wouldn't that make it extremely difficult for PAs to make a living? How would a PA make a living if everyone else was making their own models? Just a thought.
I think its great if people try to make their own content. There is an appreciation of what's involved, if you can do it yourself. Besides no one is replacing a Stonemason or a DzFire without some serious commitment of learning time.
Everyone can, theoretically, make their own items. What you are really paying for is the time it takes to make them. Conceiveably I could make my own figure, rig it, texture it, etc. It would just take a year, and quite a bit of pulled hair. Clothes too, I could model all my clothes, but it would take a month or more to make them all. Given that many of the folks here complain if a render takes more than 10 minutes, I doubt that everyone here is going to suddenly start making everything themselves.
Now, for the rubber duck example. It would be fairly quick to model a simple one (couple of hours max) even quicker if I'm not worrying about tris or good uvs. It is a skill level that everyone is definitely capable of.
I think it's reasonable to suggest that, to further your abilities, you should consider gaining at least a passing familiarity with at least one modeling program. It really does make life easier.
I wonder how many of these people make their own paper to draw on, design their own stylus, cook up ink, hand-carve new parts for their car that they are repairing themselves, grow their own wheat to make the bread they make themselves...
As a matter of fact, I have made my own paper, bound my own books, ground pigments for paint, designed and put together custom desks and tools, made my own glass beads and silver jewelry, carded and spun and woven wool, woven baskets, hand-stitched and beaded clothing and many other things because I wanted to know how things worked and were made. That's just me. :) I am also very much a consumer of things other people make. Things I want to have or use for which I don't want to do myself. In the classes I took, there were many who took it and kept on with things (this includes 3D), and others that found they couldn't or, in the end, didn't want to spend time making things themselves. Most went away with an appreciation of the time and effort it takes to make things. When I was in college for art, the Industrial Arts course was a mandatory subject. We learned to do typography, serography, and printing of all types in order to give us, as artist, an insight of what it takes when we go to a printer and ask them to do something. These things just give people a perspective and sometimes sparks a desire to more things. In the end, what almost everyone here has a desire to do is create art in some way. That's a great starting and ending point for many. I hope to do art till the day I draw my last breath.
I create some of my own content, and I buy content. In fact, sometimes I buy content because taking it apart, so to speak, is a great mini tutorial. The nice thing about Carrara for me is that I am able to integrate my custom efforts with my Daz purchases. My efforts at modeling have not eliminated my purchases of Daz and PA models. Rather, it has given me an appreciation for the quality of the good PAs. But the nice thing about having my entry-level modeling skills is that it makes it much easier to adapt the clothing wardrobe that I already have. So I do think there is something to be said for trying to get some basic modeling skills in whatever program of choice, especially if frustrated with the range of content offered. Nothing is stopping us from modeling a loose turtleneck for the G2F for our own use. Just remember to find joy in what you do.
If everyone did start doing their own modeling and such, wouldn't that make it extremely difficult for PAs to make a living? How would a PA make a living if everyone else was making their own models? Just a thought.
Not everyone will create their own things and even when they do, they may not create everything. It's for this reason that I am a PA, but also a customer who purchases clothing and environments and other things which someone else has made. It may be because I am not good at a particular thing, or someone has made something I might have but has already done it, so it saves me time, or has done it far better than I could have. Sometimes the way someone has imagined something, in a way I hadn't thought about, is intriguing enough for me to purchase. There will always be creators and there will always be consumers as long as someone can make something someone else wants.
"If everyone did start doing their own modeling and such, wouldn't that make it extremely difficult for PAs to make a living? How would a PA make a living if everyone else was making their own models?"
I don't even know how to respond to this. So capitalism and the free market are just...ducky (sorry) until someone else wants to do what you do? If other people start becoming competition, you up your game. You don't limit who can play.
"seriously, if I packed up 10 unique small props like the duck or the pizza slice, less than a buck a piece and sold the collection for $8.99, if DAZ would even bother accepting it for the store ( don't forget we PAs got to spend time making kick a$$ promos for these things as well. how much money would it make? what would these ten items be to target the max numbers of customers? how many customers will put it on their wishlist to get the set a few month from now at 60-70-80-90% off where that $8.99 has now dwindle down to .87cents for the PA's share. You kinda missed the point of what I was suggesting. Don't pack them up, sell ONE or TWO for $2. They don't go on sale, so customers don't wait around, and it would take five minutes to make promos for individual items. I've got an UberEnvironment + spotlight preset that I use on entire scenes, just drop the item in something like that and render from a few angles. You don't need Joelegecko to build a scene for a $2 necktie.
You kinda missed the point of what I was suggesting.
No I didn't, just DAZ wont do single items like that, there's too much overhead with individual items, so I suggested the only possible setup that could work which is a pack of props.
Fair enough, but what overhead? Adding a page to the store?
My suggestions are more for what I'd like to see DAZ do as a whole and isn't directed at individual PAs. I know they won't do single items now, I'm just wondering out loud if they did.

And speaking of ducks, has anyone else noticed that there are virtually NO birds in this store now? I went looking for a bird (again, as filler for an outdoor scene) and all I could find was three old birds by Noggin and Predatron's crow (which I have). That's not an overly specific bit of content that a single user is requesting, that's a gap in basic essential content that some PA ought to take advantage of.
I buy things all of the time.. If I actually have time to render for artistic purposes I'll often retexture things or make small items to fill in where needed. I have no interest in modeling everything in a scene even thoguh I could.
Adam Thwaites has released a rubber duck in his freebie section. I'm also sad, that Lisa and Ken has moved to the other site, but maybe they get better conditions there.
Has anyone said "Daz is listen to their customers?". Looks like they need a hearing aid. Then new Bethany 7 Bundles contains only one "normal" outfit. (Gangster Outfit) And you need to buy again the pro bundle to get it, when you want Bethany too and save some money. ll other outfits are just the same unrealisticc fantasy outfits and poses. I#m sure they never change their concepts.

And they can reap the consequences. No pro bundle (or probably any bundle) for me- once they get the prices fixed so we can even SEE the prices- page 404 errors at 4:30 am. Sigh, still hoping that one day DAZ will fire the webteam and get a new crew that knows how to do websites.
Fair enough, but what overhead? Adding a page to the store?
Creating the product in the system, adding the product pages and readmes, categorizing the product, packaging and setting them up for download... (I'm sure I'm forgetting some)
Even for testing, it often takes less resources testing a pack of multiple items than testing all those items as individual products.
"DAZ wont do single items like that, there's too much overhead with individual items"
What overhead?? It's all virtual. It's not like there's limited shelf space. It's a freaking page on their website, which no doubt takes all of five minutes ot put together since everything is on a template.

Customers are people who buy things.
Many people in this topic have said they do not buy things even when they are the kind of outfits they are looking for.

GMAX, is that even still available? I tried hunting that down a few years ago..oh snap it's now on turbosquid. Thanks for that.

There's overhead like keeping track of purchases, doing the tax stuff for sales with IRS, etc. In addition, depending on how DS shop is run, you will have to pay a higher license fee for the webshop software, depending on the number of items in the store.
If you define this as "fixed costs", in addition to the "normal storage&webspace" costs, you will have to cover the comparatively "high" monthly costs with an item which might not sell that often in a month to cover the costs.

But they DID release a more full-figured shape. Which is something people here have been asking for a long time. Given that we have been told many times that the only thing that sells at all are white super-models they have taken quite a risk here, as they listened to their customers.
And then they increased the risk by releasing this shape only two weeks after the last super-model. Because if you walk a tightrope between two skyscrapers you might as well set your shoes on fire while you're at it O_o

It wasn't about what customers said, Daz listened to sales. They stated Olympia did very well, so Daz knew a curvy figure could sell. Whether or not this particular shape does well is anyone's guess, especially because she's not like Olympia, there was recently a morph pack released with some curvy shapes, and it's all so close to Eva's release. Also I'm not so sure what percentage of people have adopted G3F, so the market may not be that big yet.

...save for the Young Teens 5, I've purchased no pro bundles since the Gen 4 days. Back then they included much more useful content like morphs, pose sets, and skins along with a character or two and some hair. Now they are mostly loaded with clothing I would rarely if ever use. hair, and a pose set and a couple characters. Hence I only purchase the base figure hair if it's nice, and what new clothing I actually like. In a sense, I end up building my own bundle.

I have the dirt and grunge shader. And while it doesn't work in Iray, I end up using the textures from it to enhance things.
