I've given in to the to notion that "they make what sells", but let's not forget that "they make what's easy for them" too.  After one has made a few styles of something it's easy to just tweak and refit their existing line to keep cranking out new but nominally different items.  i.e. item XYZ no longer sells but change it a tiny bit, rename it, increase the price and one might have another winner.  Why build another house when all you need is new wallpaper or a new roof?  It works for electronic gadgets, why not pseudo clothes?  I don't necessarily blame the PAs, a lion has a hard time becomming a vegetarian.  However, I do shake my head in dismay at the buying public for not seeing the writing on the wall.

Not all of us do that - even when I revisit an old product, like the Land Dragon 2 or the revisited Adventure Girl, I pretty much completely remodel, re-texture, etcetera. Mostly because when the time a given item could be revisited, there's new tech to rig or texture with, my own skills have grown, customer expectations or higher, and so on. And yet I'm one of the more productive PA's at DAZ. LORD knows how many products I'd have in the store if I only made "what's easy". :D

Please finish crafting the "make art" button we have been waiting years for. 1 click and instant masterpiece for all!

I agree sex sells, but not to all audiences or industries. It can scare them away!

    Matty, that's not A3 is it(your avatar)?

Most of the objections sound like the objections that have been proven wrong in other industries.

I'm don't know what other industries you're thinking of, and whether or not they could be compared to DAZ (especially in terms of number of users and buying habits).

I'm not saying it could never work, but that the potential backers are IMO a very different market than the one we have here. Whether or not it is sustainable remains to be proven, but it could be worth a try.

For what it's worth, I think I'm going to start trying to spend half my budget on stuff I don't need but is really cool and I want to encourage. Put my money etc.

Sex often doesn't work for me as a hook. Mostly because women aren't sexually attractive to me, so its a big miss to put a scantily clad woman in an image and may actually have the opposite effect of having me take it less seriously.

Yep, yep. I can understand that.

Until such time as the female body is no longer considered a commodity existing purely for the enjoyment of the male gaze, the market will not change. There will be, likely for the foreseeable future, a glut of baby-faced big boobed women in tiny clothing. It's more than just a matter of "that's what sells", it's a cultural issue that goes much deeper than the 3d modeling world. I may not like it, but I have to live with it.

I'll buy what I like, be it on sale in the first two days, or a year down the line at full price. And I will try my darndest to ignore the things I don't like. Thus is life. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    /my 2 cents

If DAz would not release the Base Characters like Vicky or Michael. How much of the DAZ products would you buy then? Personally I think, that their characters are the main reason why we buy here. Personally I only wish DAZ would be listen more to the creatiive ones and not to their management.

Even if people don't think they female/male body is purely for the human gaze, that gaze is still one of the benefits humans should enjoy. Problems would occur otherwise :) So I don't think it has anything to do with the human body being exclusively one thing or another. It surely is part of the package that people need to accept.

The Dazsphere is not the 3D modelling world. If you look at CG artists...their portfolios are far more diverse than what most of the daz community crank out. And while I agree you will see that "Sex" sells in lots of industries, it's not done in a fashion similar to what you find in the Daz store.

Yes, it's nice that Daz has a half naked man on the front page of the website. However that is not what you see on the banners that you see across the web. This is the latest in a long line of scantily clad females used to sell DAZ3d. I understand but sex sells but it seems like you are only focusing on one part of your niche market.

After many comments, I'll say this... I don't think the Current Daz marketing team is doing PA Vendors any favors with some of the sales the offer. These Sales are great for me, the consumer in the short term, but have to hurt the PA's and eventually the consumer in the long term. Take the recent "Mega Flashsale" I picked up over $450 base price items for a grand total of $25.00. One item that I picked up was the Hiro 5 Clothing and Hair only bundle. I liked it, but essentially it is 4 outfits and 3 hairs. The main item I like is the red tanktop and action pants combo, even though I really don't need another tanktop and I have several pants that could easily be made to look like the action pants. Some of the other clothing is a nice add, but nothing that I really, really need, certainly nothing I needed for the base price of $99.95. I first saw this a couple months ago at 60% off, not bad but $40.00 still didn't entice me enough. Then it was in a fast grab for 70% off, again for $30.00 still not that special, but the other day I got it for 90% off + a 30% off for PC+, so for $7.00 I picked up the $100.00 item... Again, great for me, but realistically, how do you pay for the lights with that kind of cut? The second thing with this kind of sale, is they happen frequently enough that it teaches budget conscious consumers to wait, unless you really, really want it. I almost never pick up anything under 60% off, and have even passed on things I've wanted at 70% off, and each time have been rewarded with a 80-90% off sale at some point.  Granted, I'm sticking with G1  with 3Delight for now, as it is more than I need to do what I want (and Frankly about the limit of what my old machine can handle) so I doubt I'll be seeing a lot of new product specifically for G1.

    Matty, that's not A3 is it(your avatar)?

No it is not.  Its Genesis 2 Female.  She is a custom blend of 10 different characters plus the body morphs.  The skin is Bryonia.  Same girl I have been using in some of my promos and a lot of my art since sept.

I stopped using Aiko 3 over a year ago.

Never said it works for everyone.

Aaanndd the moon has come full phase again! (*sigh*)

Like everything in life you cannot please everyone so you try to do what works well.

Do I agree with making women into sex objects, no but I do know that images showing beautiful young women are easier to sell items then anything else.  Doesn't work for everything but it still works.

DAZ can always throw the men like Gianni or Michael on the gay sites to increase share, not necessarily the porn sites but the more popular sites, that should bring more people that would purchase the male items. Hmmm... that's an ideal.

Actually they listen to their customers. This usually determines the type of characters that get released, and why some characters don't appear in some generations or have been permanently shelved.

I'd have to disagree. I found DAZ because of the Michael 4 promo with his shirt off.

Let me ask something else, another suggestion for you to reject.  ;)

Can you tell me the reason why 'tiny' products are not sold, like just a rubber duckie or a single necktie or just a set of brown eye textures? A problem that many 3D artists have is finding these sorts of filler items for a scene, and many would probably pay $1 or $2 for an item they need. I definitely would have paid $5 in the past for a single medieval training dummy, a medieval street lantern, or even a couple of old fence segments. Turbosquid does this, and although they're usually not that affordable, the ability to look for precisely what you need is nice and certainly more convenient than hoping it gets included in a bundle (soon!).

I'll be honest, I don't believe that it's too costly to support merchants that don't sell a lot (as we discussed before) or that the same reasons would negate this idea. Perhaps if PAs didn't have to make everything into a large product that demanded a $15+ price tag, we could get more variety and they'd have a bit less stress.

In principle I kind of like this actually. I think execution could be hard (lets be honest, the DAZ store tends to have issues with things relating to bundles and sales) the hardest thing would probably be visual though, lets say you have a bundle of 20 items if you're also viewing  them individually, the way the store is setup currently, that would get very spammy, very quickly.

(I'm also not a prop set maker either, I like it purely from a buyers perspective, you'd have to ask a vendor who makes props If they like it or would rather chance folks buying the whole set for the specific things they want)

I think bringing in new buyers would help. When I hear that men's content doesn't sell, I have to wonder what advertising is being used to bring in artists who want more men's content.

When I am on the web and see DAZ products advertised. It is almost always a scantily clad female I see advertising female figures. If you want to attract users who want to render men, you won't be rendering beautiful women in bikinis. =-)

...that is pretty much why I washed out as a superhero comic book artist. Never could get into the female archetype heroine with boobs bigger than NBA basketballs and a waist as narrow as a ten year old, in a revealing costume that looked like it was spray painted on and 6" spike heels on the boots. .

...actually sketched out a parody cover as my comment on the topic, may still have it in my files..

...funny the only Vicky and Michale I ever purchased willingly were M4 and V4 because that was rpretty much all there was when I first started.  Also the later Gen 4 characters requried them as the base "unimesh". I ended up with M5, V5 (both of the pro bundles) for free through my upgrade to Carrara 8.5 Pro.  I got the base Vicky 6 and Micahel 6 free as special offers.   I rarely use either either the Gen 5/6 Vicky and Mike strictly by themselves.

....I found Daz because someone on the Shadowrun Dumpshock Forums gave me the link to the site.  When I first saw some of the promo thumbnails on the store page, I kind of wondered if I was sent to the right place. Save for a few buildings, plants, and props, most of the clothing was chainmail bikinis, sci-fi armour that left the gut and upper chest exposed, and some rather "revealing" clothing that no sane runner would ever wear to a "Saturday Night Firefight".

...I know the feeling, For example in one scene I needed a big '80s styled cassette Boom Box and for another, one of those collapsible shopping trolleys that older folks use. I scoured both commercial and freebie 3D sites and could only find them at TS.  Crikey, it took waiting until G2F to finally get my character Leela's "iconic" clothing, a good set of bib overalls that could be used with different shirts.or tops.

About minor products, a question for some DAZ_person. Would this scenario be allowed:

    1. I offer the product to DAZ;
    2. Kevin Peterson responds with the sweetest imaginable go get lost letter smiley (really, never got a less painful no in my life);
    3. I publish the thing on TurboSquid and...
    4. ...I advertise the product here.

    Would step 4 be allowed?

..I don't think so as we are not allowed to even link to another store.site.in a forum post.

The only time we can post a link to another 3D vendor site is if it is for a freebie.

In regards to the topic on improving male content sales...

I dont think folks are seeing it. The daz/poser marketing seems largely based only on sexy "Sex sells" approach. Female characters sell best cos they market Pinups / sexy gal to prodominently male consumers. They dont advertise males at all offsite, but almost everything male released is also focused on "Sexy"... which is very limited to mostly a focus on the female market and gays (as suggested). Now its come up, how to increase sales, and the suggestion: market Gianni, Mike and such ones on gay sites, would lure in more customers ... Would help, but I feel its missing the point... Its not working cos they're hell bent focused on (apparently) a very small portion of the market. Maybe look at big name games, the characters all mostly MALE, they arent at all focused on "Sexy boy", although many of them are seen as attractive, they are instead focused on the "Awesome" "Cool" "Bad ass" guys which appeal to the male market in a considerably different way.  Just my thoughts and observations. smiley
