Just be careful folks. Looks like much of the eastern US is frigid and windy today thru the weekend. They're talking frostbite with only 10 minutes of exposure.

Would you like to send your snow here? Local weather forcast for Sunday is between 110 and 115 F. Right now, it's 99 F, and the "coolest" day out of the next seven days. I'm about an hour west of Sydney, Australia. The coldest, recent overnight temperature here was 66 F.

...trade ya.some of our cold rain for a little bit of that heat.

I'll take all your rain, if you want.   As for warmth, I'll gladly give you some - I got myself employed, just so I can spend my days in airconditioned comfort.

Well, if it is any consolation to you folks down south (and I know that it probably isn't), it is a balmy -33 C  (that's about -27 F for the metrically challenged) here this morning. A nice crisp morning as we would say, which sounds somewhat counterintuitive. A little nippy, but then again, its a dry cold. The good news is that it is dead calm, with an inversion about 30 metres or so up, making the smoke from the chimneys level off under the weight of the even colder air above. Pretty much business as usual for January in these parts. Of course we're somewhat used to it, and, more importantly, prepared for it. I hope everyone is looking out for one another in those places where winter as we know it is not a normal part of life.

No more snow here. It's melting, then re-freezing at night.
Lots of accidents, I'm staying home.
I'm surprised we haven't had the usual power outages.
Generator starts and runs, plenty of gasoline.
Snow melted off my solar panels and my water heater today, so I have them now also.
Pizza cooking, coffee in fridge, Serenity in DVD player, unread book on side table.
    Bring it on.

Still lots of snow here on the Outer Banks and it's not going to warm up enough to melt it until Monday. Meanwhile I'm stuck at home.

Finally dug my car out only to have the snow plow come down the street, not once but twice dumping hard crusty snow where I just shoveled. Damn bomb cyclone noreaster whatever.

It's just hit 115 F, here at 1400 Sunday (Sydney time), and still climbing! That's in the shade, and probably over 140 in my tiled courtyard. And the hottest days are in February, here. Luckily, though, no one's died that I know of. As long as the power grid holds, everyones' using AC. Tomorrow should be a much more comfortable 100 F or so.

I'm west of Sydney (Australia), just outside a town called Riverstone. The problem is that my retirement village is located in a shallow valley, where the heat can't escape.

Edit to add: Looks like the temperature is fluctuating. After peaking at 118, it's dropped a little to 116 F. I'm guessing there's an inversion layer a few hundred feet up. I just checked, and Sydney CBD is at chilly 104.7 F.

You should move up here, to the Pilliga.  It's struggling to get above 36c.

I'm surprised they're still playing cricket at the SCG.  It's supposedly up to 53c at the stumps.

It's official: Sydney has suffered through its hottest day on record. 116.780 F. That was in the town of Penrith, which has a similar microclimate to where I live. That's shade temperature. In the sun? I'm not going to find out.

On a side note, I looked out my living room, and there are dozens of bugs clinging to the window glass, which is cooled but the AC. All the bees, which have been swarming around my flowers, are gone; probably sheltering.

The bees will all be in the hives, using their wings in an attempt to cool them down.

When I lived in Washington, DC I saw the cherry blossoms around the Tidal Basin a few times but learned quickly to plan my visit to slip in-between peak crowd times, or just enjoy them while driving on one of the numerous bridges and roads that pass that area.  Impossible to find a parking place within a half mile of the actual trees during peak crowd times which is most of the day when in full bloom.  Easiest path was to take the Metro to Smithsonian station or Federal Triangle station and walk down to the tidal basin/Jefferson Memorial area.  There are actually several other smaller things to see in that area too that you'd miss if you just were able to drive and park next to the basin.  Don't take a taxi because they don't want to get caught in the stop & go traffic jam in that area.(and if they do, you don't want to pay the drive time!)

You did n't have to go to the Tidal Basin to see cherry blossoms. There also are / were some beautiful trees in Chevy Chase.

For that matter there are some beautiful ones right here along Fairmont Ave. in Jamestown, NY.  yes  But if you want a photo of you and your friends among the cherry blossoms with the Jefferson Memorial in the background, it's better if you go to the Tidal Basin. enlightened

Note: You can also get a photo of the Tidal Basin cherry blossoms with the Washington Monument in the background.  And if you couldn't get to the Tidal Basin, there is also a similar (though much smaller and more ornate) "Washington Monument" in Baltimore, Maryland but no cherry blossoms nearby.  However, I've found that almost any photo of Baltimore away from the harbor needs a lot of touchup to look picturesque. devil

We were supposed to get severe thunderstorms and high winds for two days.
Nothing but a two-day overcast.  Down to 46 tonight, then two nights in the thirties.
