Here it's still freezing nights, thawing days, no precipitation.  Daffodills are poking their head above the remaining snow.  Spring is in full motion.  Right now it's bright and sunny.  Just thought I'd share. indecision

...we actually have daffodils finally coming up since that little taste of spring we had the other week.  Usually we see them blooming by mid February.  That warm spell seems to have awakened the trees as well as suddenly blossoms are out in full force and leaves are beginning to emerge.  After this brief backhand from winter we are having, finally back into the 60s by next week.  Supposed to be 32° Caturday morning but something like a 5% chance of precipitation so thankfully no white stuff from the sky as we feared.

I hope we do not get a blizzard.

....as I understand, LeatherGryphon's in the midst of one and it's likely heading east.

  • Non-complaint:  Actually, I'm more on the edge of it.  We were predicted to get twice as much as we did.

It's the exact opposite, down here.  Christmas eve was our last "cool" day at 31c (87f).  Since then, daytime temps have ranged between 38c-43c (100-110f), except for last wednesday when, in my backyard, it was 45.8c (114f). Throw in a few dust storms and bushfires to stuff up the air quality, too.

Fortunately, late yesterday, temp dropped from 40c to 19c when a thunderstorm came through - it was wonderful!  Shame about the 3hr power failure, though :)

Got a bit warmer but still too cold to be outside in my opinion.  Glad I am home and inside.

...The chill is on in Wisconsin.  Currently -13° (F) in Milwaukee with a low tonight of -22° (today's high was -9°)

    -17° (F) in Stevens Point with a low of - 30° tonight. (today's high was -10°)

    -18° (F) in Madison with a low of - 30° tonight. (today's high was -4°)

Meanwhile, in what is usually known as an extremely frigid location this time of year, Fairbanks Alaska, It is sunny and about 30° warmer than either of those Wisconsin cities. (and they have three hours less daylight).

We're tough but this is ridiculous. I couldn't even find any place open to get a pizza delivered.

C or F?  if C then when I went to bed last night it was -17.2C (-1F) and it was -2F this morning at 8:30AM.  Probably colder during the night.  Chilly willy! surprise  But not the coldest its been here.  I remember nights of -20F (-28.8C)  The snowmen would huddle in groups.

Anyone wishing to understand what is happening in central North America with the recent frigid temperatures should cease believing that the term "Polar Vortex" is applicable. That term, which is actually a weather phenomenon, has been misused for some time now by news and weather media to try and dramatize the events in order to increase audience and sell advertising. Any news media that does so should be rewarded by being ignored, having demonstrated either an ignorance of what they are reporting, or blatantly and knowingly misusing the term. Many people who are experiencing the cold hardly need anyone dramatizing it, especially for material gain.

Although it won't help anyone to deal with the bitter cold, know that anyone south of the arctic circle is not experiencing a polar vortex, but a southerly movement of an arctic airmass. Not as catchy, but simply the truth. It is neither a vortex, nor can it be "polar" at all, since that would only apply to something near to or over the north pole. So it is incorrect on two counts. Somewhat ironically, it is actually a weakening or absence of the real polar vortex that exists in winter over the north pole. The weakening is usually caused by above average temperatures there, releasing  a southern flow of frigid air. The vortex is caused by extremely cold, dense air over the pole in winter that gives rise to strong circular airflows around the pole (thus the term vortex), and that tends to draw air inwards, keeping arctic air in the north. If the air over the pole warms, the vortex is weakened, allowing frigid arctic air to flow south. The weaker the vortex, the further south it will tend to penetrate. As counterintuitive as it may seem, it is actually warming in one place (in this case over the north pole) that causes it to be colder someplace else - in this case central North America. The next time you hear a news reporter or weather reporter referring to your cold weather as a "polar vortex", you should really look elsewhere for your news and weather.

Keep warm. Limit exposure and dress for the weather, not fashion.

To answer Mystara's question about frostbite, it can occur fairly quickly and only takes minutes in adverse conditions. It is basically a freezing of exposed flesh. It is not merely low temperatures alone that contribute, and so the question of how long it takes will also vary depending upon the amount of wind. With low temperatures in the minus double digits and strong winds, exposed flesh can freeze very quickly. For example, the last couple of days our local nightime temperatures were falling to close to -40, but we were also experiencing relatively strong winds out of the northwest as well. When I walked to the store, I was fine since the wind was largely at my back. However, on the way home the wind was blowing on my exposed face. I only walked a short distance for several minutes before I felt the telltale stinging and needed to cover my face with one hand to prevent frostbite until I arrived home. Understanding what is happening is the first step to dealing with it.
