Complaint... Curses on the guy who signed off on the design of my UPS/APC/Battery backup device...
God I hate the imbecile who designed the audible alarm noises... There are four different sounds, and three are virtually indistinguishable from each other and one, a constant high pitched wail has no known assigned role...
Probably a bad way of saying "it makes a sound which the company doesn't explain the purpose of"... I've sent them several emails asking about it and their response is several versions of "read the damn instructions"... But the instructions don't cover it... In fact they only cover two sounds.
My guess is it's something designed to detect micro-power fluctuations at 3:45 am, or thereabouts and wake you up so you don't get too much sleep...
Whatever it is causes the stupid thing to wail like a nuclear reactor meltdown alert... It's just a guess, but it's probably around 100 db or so, and there is no way to shut it off aside from resetting the unit... Which involves pressing and holding down the power button for twenty seconds or so... Too little does nothing, too long shuts the whole unit down... None of this was covered by the instructions, it had to be figured out... The frustrating part is (besides everything I just mentioned), we have five of them in the house... And whatever causes them to go off, doesn't trip all of them... only one, either late at night, when you are away or when it is least convenient.
Normally I'd put tape over the alarm speaker opening... But the vent grills are the only openings.
The other noise which isn't mentioned beyond "an audible alarm will sound" is the annoying power failure alarm... if the power is out for more than 30 seconds, a high pitched squeal sounds for ten seconds... Followed by twenty seconds of silence... Followed by ten seconds of squealing... Repeated until either the power comes on, or you shut down the unit... Which is what happened this afternoon when the power company had to turn the power off to replace a transformer (not a Decepticon or Autobot... Just a power transformer)...
I get the desire to alert you that there is a power failure, so you can prepare to save and shut down, or decide to keep working for a few minutes longer... But why make it so damned annoying?!! You know how annoying it is to have five of them going off at once?... I could imagine how crazy that would be if I was elderly, infirm or had some sort of nervous conditions... Or imagine a pet trapped with that sound all day.
Nobody mentioned any of this in any reviews... Nobody... It got decent reviews, and it was reasonably priced, so I replaced all the really old ones with these... It didn't become a problem until almost exactly the point where I couldn't return it to the store for a full refund... Once I discovered the annoying lack of documentation of the alarm features it was too late... And it only shows up as an issue if you specifically Google the problem or variations of the problem.
Then again the top reviews seemed reasonable, but looking over the rest, you have idiots reviewing it like: "Five stars- it came on time and the box was very nice! Wish I could give it ten stars!"... "5 stars!!!!! Wow I haven't opened the box yet, but the FedEx guy was real nice to me!!!!"... "5 stars-my cat loves it!"... "5strs beztest luv it OMG #LUVTHEBOX"... "Five hundred stars! I haven't gotten it yet, but I have a good feeling about this!"... Seriously, I hate morons who review stuff they haven't used yet... Prompt delivery is not the sole basis for a product review... We need companies to review the reviews and weed out stupid reviews.
Megh... Complaint over.
I am hot and thirsty. I am also outside where I have no access to water.
Is the UPS made by APC? If not...well, there you go.
That said, beeps and sirens are always annoying. I got a couple of new APC units that say you can silence the alarm without shutting the unit down. A nice feature, especially if it's only powering the modem and router. It should have plenty of uptime for just those things. computers with hard drives spinning, fans spinning, CPU glowing...well, they won't last very long attached to those things...long enough to save your stuff and power down, though.

If it was not for the lack of water or the lack of a breeze or no access to a restroom, I would be happy now, but instead I am hot and thirsty and clueless when someone will come to unlock the house.
edit I think I have been out in the heat for two hours or so with very little water. No wonder I do not feel well.
complainnnnt - i called the doctor yesterday to tell them the victoza is too expensive for me.
they said they'd give me something else a lot cheaper.

..sounds more like a prison than a place to live. Denying access to restroom facilities should be illegal.
Explain to them gently but firmly you have limited funds and need to be prescribed meds that are available in generics. Generics are not inferior to name brands. They are the same thing. They have to be by law. Generics are our friends.
It is more like a prison than a home. At least I have unsupervised time otherwise it would be exactly like a prison. I feel like staff are more important than clients. I had to change seats in the van I rode because a staff had to sit where I sat. I had to sit behind where I originally sat. They said it was a respect thing. I felt like they thought I was crazy for being confused about it. I feel like I am not important other than for the money I pay to stay here.
Mosquitoes are not our friend. They are not kissing you but biting you to feed on your blood.
...this is why, as difficult as it is for me some days to do certain tasks, I am opposed to going into an assisted living situation like some feel I should. If I want to stay up late working on a scene or my stories, I can, there is no "lights out" time. The only rules I have to deal with are my own and a few very minor ones for the building I live in (like after 10:30 PM it's quiet time which I actually enjoy after the last place I lived in).
Even though we have home grocery delivery here, I still walk to the market (unless the weather is bad, then I take transit) as I like picking out my own items (particularly produce, meats, and fish) rather than have someone else do that (and it saves money too).
I find remaining independent in spite of the physical difficulty sometimes, makes life overall, more enjoyable.
I am inside now. I used restroom and about to get some water in me.
...good.
Vampires
I took a shower and trying to get some water in me.
Glad you are safe and inside getting hydrated Miss Bad Wolf. Can you carry a water bottle?
I did but the water bottle can only hold so much water. I drank it all up on my walk.
