Is the UPS made by APC?  If not...well, there you go.

That said, beeps and sirens are always annoying.  I got a couple of new APC units that say you can silence the alarm without shutting the unit down.  A nice feature, especially if it's only powering the modem and router.  It should have plenty of uptime for just those things.  computers with hard drives spinning, fans spinning, CPU glowing...well, they won't last very long attached to those things...long enough to save your stuff and power down, though.

I've always used APC UPs'es.  I've found that the higher end ones for home use have good features, software and quality.  The lower end ones, not so much.  I currently have three APC "BACK-UPS PRO-1000" units.  Love 'em yes  Unfortunately, it's getting close to time I'm going to have to think about replacing batteries. no  ($$$) frown  Although I ended up with three because a couple of times I found it not that much more costly to get a whole new unit including the battery while on sale rather than to just go out and get a proper replacement battery.  Later when money isn't so tight I pony up and get a proper battery for the old unit. enlightened

..sounds more like a prison than a place to live.  Denying access to restroom facilities should be illegal.

It is more like a prison than a home.  At least I have unsupervised time otherwise it would be exactly like a prison.  I feel like staff are more important than clients.  I had to change seats in the van I rode because a staff had to sit where I sat.  I had to sit behind where I originally sat.  They said it was a respect thing.  I felt like they thought I was crazy for being confused about it.  I feel like I am not important other than for the money I pay to stay here.

...this is why, as difficult as it is for me some days to do certain tasks, I am opposed to going into an assisted living situation like some feel I should.  If I want to stay up late working on a scene or my stories, I can, there is no "lights out" time.  The only rules I have to deal with are my own and a few very minor ones for the building I live in (like after 10:30 PM it's quiet time which I actually enjoy after the last place I lived in).

Even though we have home grocery delivery here, I still walk to the market (unless the weather is bad, then I take transit) as I like picking out my own items (particularly produce, meats, and fish) rather than have someone else do that (and it saves money too).

I find remaining independent in spite of the physical difficulty sometimes, makes life overall, more enjoyable.

My parents refuse to go into assisted living even though they need it. They constantly fall and end up calling 911 to have them get them on their feet. They said they are going to start charging them cause it happens so often. They can barely support themselves physically. Me and my brother keep trying to convince them to do it but they aren't budging. They both walk with either a cane, walker or wheelchair. They take turns in the wheelchair. If they went into assisted living me and my brother wouldn't have to worry so much cause there is always people there to help.

...fortunately I am not at that stage though am looking to get a "walking stick". I also go to market a couple times a week so that helps to keep the load light (I use a shoulder bag for the heavy items). Sidw stop hand chopping things like garlic and ginger as well as hand shredding cheese as it became too rough on fhe hands.

Walking sticks are fun.  You can get into mischief with walking sticks whilst you are growing older disgracefully.

Canes (walking sticks) have several useful purposes too.  They help establish "yes, I qualify for the movie discount" honors.  They provide a quick, safe, "foot in the door" or "I'm next in line" indication.  They help sharpen your eye/muscle coordination when alone in the elevator and you get to practice aiming the tip at the buttons.  Don't worry about the germs or archaic chewing gum on the bottom of the cane tip, just walk down the stairs on your way out.  The cane also helps you walk down stairs when avoiding dirty elevator buttons.   I find my cane very helpful establishing need when I take my car to the mechanic and hobble out into their office and weakly ask if someone could drive me home while they work on my car. (It only takes them a few minutes and I give a worthy tip)

The next time you see a person with a cane getting out of an elevator alone, have a chuckle or two and let somebody else push the buttons.devil

In a 30 minute window I stopped breathing 80 times so they put the mask on early cause they didn't feel comfortable letting me go longer without it. Been sleeping with it for 4 yrs now.

Complaint:  Had a scare yesterday.  My blood pressure went sky high for a couple hours.  I had a headache come on quickly, I felt weird and dizzy.  I grabbed my BP machine and instead of the normal (for me) 115/75 it read 180/120. surprise  I wasn't sure the reading was correct so I tried it couple more times all giving the same magnitute readings.  Never having had pressure that high before and feeling so weird I called 911.  I didn't want to risk passing out or having a stroke while driving a car but I also didn't want to raise a fuss if this turned out to be nothing, so I requested the 911 people to simply contact the local fire department's ambulance (they're cheaper than the big city ambulance) and they came to check me out.  Unfortunately, when they got here they didn't have a qualified medic so they called the city ambulance and they came too.  Now I had a parade of emergency vehicles with lights flashing, parked on the main road blocking half a lane of traffic.  So much for not raising a fuss. frown

All this took about a half hour before somebody with a proper BP machine came in to check me out.  By that time the pressure had gone down a bit to around 170/115.  We discussed my options, they took my BP again and it continued to wind down and I was feeling better so I declined to go with them and said I'd contact my doctors or call them back if I got worse again. indecision

To make a long story short (too late), apparently I had too much salt during my mini-adventure to Erie the previous day and the bag of potato chip munchies, McDonald's breakfast, salty steak at Outback Steakhouse and salty dinner at home, then Spam and eggs for breakfast the next morning, compounded by the disruption of the timing of my BP medications during the mini-adventure, it all conspired to peak my BP at about 11:00AM yesterday.  Thankfully, I was back to normal a few hours later and have been OK since, but damn it, now I really need to watch my salt too. sad

Non-complaint:  Neither ambulance company charged me anything for the non-transport visit.

I go right to them when it's time to replace a battery.  They recycle the old one, send a return sticker to put on the box, so you don't have to pay for the shipping.  Schneider Electric website.

Thanks,  Yeah, me too.  Don't want to go to the emergency room.  With these types of problems they stick you on a cart and call in all sorts of doctors you've never seen before and will send you bills 5 months from now because they'll take all sorts of tests and get to use their machine that goes "bing" and find something wrong.  It's a rule, they must find something wrong.  It justifies having the machine that goes "bing". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arCITMfxvEc Then you have to stay in the hospital for 3 days and have to pay daily for cable TV access and tasteless food and endure the person in the other bed in the room, and be connected to bags of stuff so that you don't run away.  All this whether or not your symptoms dissipate in a few hours or not, because they have to "observe" you. frown Nope, I can't do that right now because tomorrow,... tomorrow evening I get to go to the symphony again, yay! smiley  Ticket already in hand.  Talked about it a couple days ago (pg 31).  Rachmaninoff 2nd piano concerto at Chautauqua.  Yay! yes

And CPAP machines are noisy. I  have a friend who uses one. I haven't heard it, I'm just taking his word for it.

I know several people who have taken sleep studies. They ALL were told they have sleep apnea, so I'm suspicious of it being a similar racket to everyone being told they need a hearing aid after having a "free" hearing test. frown

About CPAP machines, if you really need one it's good to know!

But the "free" hearing test?  Yep, I was almost caught by that one. indecision Yes, I have problems hearing high frequencies.  No, I don't believe getting a $3000 hearing aid not covered by my insurance will keep it from getting worse over time.  And what is a hearing aid for me anyway?  It's a tiny audio amplifier with a customized tone control curve that emphasizes the relevant high frequencies.  I can navigate the world without one thank you.  And if I once in a while get a teenage girl with a squeeky voice at a McDonald's counter I'll just give her the line; "I'm sorry, can you please slow down, us old people listen slowly."  It usually works without casting blame.  And at home for watching television or listening to music while puttering anywhere around the house I have a nice set of comfortable, quality, wireless headphones that allow me to adjust the treble sufficiently and they cost less than even 1/20th of a hearing aid. smiley

Can I still appreciate live symphonies?  Yes, I can pick out all the instruments except that I just watch the guy hitting the triangle as if it were made of soundless foam. frown

And do I miss parts of some conversations when not listening closely?  Yes, especially if they're women with high voices but most people I end up talking to seldom say anything worth listening attentively to anyway. indecision

And why does a hearing aid cost $3000 anyway?  Korea should be able to pump them out like M&Ms for $100 and then perhaps another $100 for the custom ear fitting process.enlightened  $3000, bah humbug! angry
