Ooooooo.... the back half of the year starts in two weeks!  I'm betting he's talking about Daz Studio 5.

I'm worried about that line. For me, nothing good comes out of something like that.

Iray, HD Morphs, Genesis, DAZ Studio Pro becoming free...?  DIM replacing the awful BitRock installers?  The new store works a thousand times better than the old store, but it was a difficult transition, as were all the others, and many more that I'm glossing over.

    To quote from elsewhere:

The process can be bumpy and unpleasant for some, but the trendline is toward progress.

More good comes out of creative destruction than stagnation by preserving the status quo.  This may be, however, a fundamental belief that divides people.  I've found that a great many arguments distill down to that question. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

How do I get Genesis 8 female?

You go into your product library and do a search on Genesis 8 Starter Essentials. It should already be there for you to download.

V8 is a morph for her. You don't *really* need V8 unless you pick up content that does require her. But it would be a good idea to pick up the Head and Body morph packages, and the Expression morph package if you want to be able to create characters by dial-spinning. That's where the dials come from.

She is lovely, and I am very pleased about the compatibility with the previous version, as far as skin and clothing goes. There is even a free pose converter available already, and it works very well, so this transition has been much easier than the last one. It really looks like you listened to feedback on the transition from Genesis 2 to 3 when creating Genesis 8. Thank you.

Yeah. Genesis 1 was as painless a transition as possible, since they included the basic autofit clones, and you could use all three of the gen4 UV maps on it. But the new rigging, and the weightmapping were going to take some getting used to. And they sweetened the deal, because there were a *lot* more morphig capabilities than we'd ever had with Morphs++.

The G1->G2 transition was mainly made acrimonious due to the restoration of the gender split. Otherwise it wasn't half bad. Although by then we were already getting the slew of separate UV Maps to have to juggle, and the PAs hadn't thrown in the towel and defaulted to the underlying base UV for just about everything yet.

Even better male support? Because you guys really made some commendable efforts to push-out counterparts during Gen 7's run. :)

Carrara 9 with native support for Genesis 3 and Genesis 8?

    Hexagon 3 in 64 bit?

Dynamic hair and cloth for DAZ Studio?

Genesis 8 Quadraped, so we can make new dogs, cats, and skunks?

If I want to create a neat image, I'd still be going back to G3.  And yet, since G8 has come out, I'm spending a lot of time trying to drive the brand spanking new square peg through the round hole.  I've got to admit that the new girl has a nice smile.  Still, import an old skin, and too many of them come out too dark, too blue.  You can partially compensate tweaking the SSS Reflectance Tint, but you can't seem to reproduce the original intent of the skin tone.  There are tales of a pose converter, and I'm waiting, but in the meanwhile the old poses are messed up.  I'm not looking forward to doing all of the conversions.  While most old wardrobe translations and autofits to the new girl work well, but many an accessory item doesn't autofit correctly at all.  The impression I'm getting is of a product rushed to release, with a eye to the new money she'll produce, but she's still got lots of work to be done if there is more than lip service being given to backward compatibility.

There is a free one (pose converter) in the Freebies section of the forum, there is a posing tool with pose converter in the store, plus the one Zev0 is doing/going to do. As far as the skin issues, are you using ones originally for DAZ Studio 4.8 or ones for figures released after 4.9 came out?

I hope this means the community is bigger now than it was two years ago!  My poor wallet says I need to sit this one out.  But I see the advantages of the model and am really happy with the direction that things are moving in.  I don't stay on the forums much but I will be shopping as often as possible even if I lagging behind the times a bit.  I think this will be great for newer users.  Its nice to see a number that says lurkers like me are out there somewhere, more of them than I know...  Its so hard to get any data that hints at the size of the community and whether new people are giving this a try and loving it as much as do.  Thanks for the stat. (Its not a number, but I'll take it!)

  • Really fabulous job on G8. Only did a cursory run through but the movements look great and the added surface options seem like a great addition.

I've kind of been waiting on Zev0 for the conversion.   The skins, I've used both.  I guess I'll have to watch the age of the skin more than I used to.  I at least have a note on the various characters, kept roughly in the order I acquired them, mostly when they were new.  I might just have to figure out where the colors start shifting.

Just went back and did a G3 image.  It was a relief to go back to the familiar.  Driving band spanking new round pegs through square holes can be fun, but...

Hmm, I guess I'm the only one not that excited about it. So far I think the G3 models are much more attractive and I already have hundreds of merchant resource morphs for it and I've been able to do a lot of great expressions for G3. I was going to get the G8 face morphs but it seems to be lacking an iris size morph and nostril flare morph which I always use...  I guess I already have so much content that this doesn't add much for me and no decent discount for me, so not something I'm rushing into. Might try transferring G3 morphs to the base model to see if that works, but seems like too much work for not much of an advantage... I already have enough content to last me at least 20 years though, so do I really need this?

    @Virtual_World  " Especially the smile."

Completely agree. That's perhaps the most natural smile I've seen on a Studio character.

    Lovely render by the way.

@Blantyr  "I might just have to figure out where the colors start shifting."

The first public release of 4.9 had an updated Iray engine from Nvidia that fixed errors/made changes in the SSS Reflectance tint.

So do I understand right that G1, G2, and G3 materials will work on G8?  I see that the clothes will but was wondering about the skins.

G3 skins. There are ways to convert G2 and G to G3 but without a third party tool I don't know how to personally. Maybe someone else will come along and explain that the way they are explaining how to use the Transfer Tool to transfer morphs.

Not unless you have Cayman Studios' Legacy UVs for Genesis 3 series.

There is an Iris Size morph. There is also a Nostril flare morph now called "Nostril Flex"

I don't think that works in converting to G8. His G3F UVs from older figures require something like geoshells. I don't think it will work in tranfering older skins to G8F.

Not even with that. That product uses geografts to cover areas that don't match up and is not a complete map. The only skins that can be used are G3 uv skins and Genesis 7 skins that have been converted to G3 uvs with the map transfer tool. Blacksmith 3D's texture converter MIGHT be able to convert G1 and G2 skins to G3.

There is this thread and in it SickleYield links to a tutorial she wrote on how to transfer G2 to G3 which she says should work to G8 too. She says it is clunky though. The 3rd party tool I speak of is called Smith3D Texture Transformer. A search on the net should find it for you.

  • I may be the odd one out here...but I am not going to be quick to jump into Gen8 for awhile.

I simply don't see the need to adopt it, especially since I have finally caught up a bit with Gen3 stuff. I don't want to buy a bunch more morphs and poses. I deal exclusively with african/african american character design. Thus, I need morphs more tailored with that in mind, something like the "Queens of the Savannah" for Genesis 2. With this new release, its like I am starting all over again. :/  Also, we just got Centaur 7, a long awaited figure....is it even compatible with Gen 8? If not, that's very disappointing. My other gripe is that bending of figures is still a pretty big problem and I usually have to make adjustments in Photoshop. Bending can be too stiff and not really realistic.

There are a few things I do like about Gen8 is #1. I can still have my own textures thanks to Gen3 and Skin Builder. #2. I really do like the new Power Pose for the face...much more natural expressions I believe. #. I like how the eyebrows are seperated from a figure. Takes out an extra step if I want to export an obj to Zbrush or something.

Other than that, I don't really find anything useful about it that I can't already do in Gen3+Gen2.

Sorry for being a debby downer. :/

I'm not a fan of V8/G8. She doesn't do anything that V7 doesn't already do and do better. If she had G2F's superior mesh and lifelike topology, I'd be on board in a heartbeat.

    That said ...

The new Iray shader system knocks everything out of the park! I'm still having to experiment via trial and error. My results are superlative, however, and I'm sure I'm not even working 15% of its capabilities. How about really promoting that shader system and getting some tutorials released on how to get the most out of it? It really deserves it.
