Has anyone tried using a nvidia egpu with a MacBook?

That worked back with macOS 10.13.6, but since macOS 10.14 there are no GPU drivers for macOS from nVivia, which means the last DS version that could render with GPU on macOS is DS 4.12.0.86, as then Iray is updated requiring newer driver versions..

In daz studio  4.24, now if I choose edit, and zero figure pose, I get a choice between restore the figure or zero the figure. There is some explanation given there, but it's not clear to me. What is the difference is that they are specifying? Also, above the zero choice, there is a restore choice. So what's going on here?

Zero does jhust that (except for scales) - it sets the affected values (all non-hidden pose, or shape properties) to 0. That can soemtimes hae undesirable results, so it now offers the choice to instead restore values to their default state (their value when the character was loaded or the memorise command was subsequently used). In gernal Restore is safer but it won't help if trying to track down a proeprty that was incorrectly saved with a non-zero default value.

Well, let's say that I load a figure that I have saved as a character. Next, I pose that character. Then I decide that I want to give the character a completely different pose. So I would like to return the character to the way it was as it originally entered the scene. Would it be better to use restore or to use zero?

Restore should  work, but use Restore Pose rather than plain Restore (or Zero Pose rather than plain Zero) in this case so you don't risk upsetting the shape and not realising until later.

Does someone know how to tell Finder to treat '.tip.png' as it is treating '.duf.png' ?

The later is recognized as an extension, so if I'm renaming a file (let's say 'Super Item.duf.png'), by default, Finder will only select 'Super Item' so I can directly rename it to 'Really Wonderfully Super Item.duf.png', but when it come to 'Super Item.tip.png', Finder will select 'Super Item.tip'.

There is also a difference if I'm using Finder renaming tool to append something to the name: if I'm adding 'for Genesis 9' to my 'Super Item' name, I'll end with:

    • Super Item for Genesis 9.duf
    • Super Item for Genesis 9.duf.png
    • Super Item.tip for Genesis 9.png

So, where is Filatoon or whatever in Daz studio 4.24.0.3?

OK, I found the filatoon, and tried that. Sure didn't like it.

And filament, or something like that, where is that?

I looked in the vendor settings and found open GL, but when I tried that on two different occasions, Daz studio just hung and would not respond and I had to force quit.

Oh one more comment: 4.24.0.3 quit far too often on Sequoia 15.4.1.

You need DS 6/2025 for Filatoon, as it requires Qt 6.x on macOS

I'm not sure how you "found" Filatoon, as it and Filament aren't available at all in 4.24.0.3. The only became available for the first time in the DAZ Studio 2025 Alpha.

Oh, OK. Well, I found something under. I think G9 and then Toons. it has something like lights, and a Fillatune

environment. I clicked that. it set the render engine to viewport.

there was a note in there where the environment was that noted that the render engine would be set to viewport.

where is this other version of studio? I'm guessing it's a Beta.

I'm having ridiculous problems with speech to text. I have to keep going back in and changing things. Sigh!

Enable DS 2025 in DIM in download filters and download it, if not just to test Filament veiewport

Ah, right, sorry, I understand now. Yes, you found items that work under Filatoon, but you don't have the Filament/Filatoon rendering engine to actually use them properly.

At Totte pointed out, you have to download the Alpha (not even a Beta yet) to hvae the engine available to render the Filatoon assets. It's worth it, in my opinion, to see if Filament will give you results you like.

I'm still so concerned after reading about problems that other people had with two versions of Daz studio on the same computer. Are those perhaps things that happened with older more primitive versions of the software, and that would not happen today?

I'm running three versons on my MacBook Pro at the moment without issues, I'm not aware of very many stories of issues, other than possibly with Windows machines where different video drivers might have been needed for different versions of DAZ Studio?

Feel free to download the 2025 Alpha and test it; if you run into any issues, DIM can very quickly uninstall it again.

  • TotteTotte Posts: 14,678

I run several different DS versions, have been doing since many years back, no problems at all.
I know some had issues some years back, I never had though.

OK, well there were two comments that seemed very encouraging. Maybe that will give me the nerve to download the 2025 version. Is that really what it's going to be? Will it come to fruition in 2025? Or is the year just a dream?

Yes, I get that. What I meant was will the full release version of this build become reality in 2025, or not? I certainly hope it does. And even more than that, I hope that Mac users will see a silicon version of this running on the new Apple chips.

As for a 2025 release date, Daz isn't saying and it may well be that they can't yet be sure.

Well, I'm starting to feel interested in downloading the alpha version. Is it simple if I want to delete it will the DIM take care of that? Is there a separate folder in applications that I need to also delete? Or do I have to go through a series of files that are zip files and so forth and choose the right ones and delete those?

Use DIM, it installs (like the public beta of DS  4), in a separate folder under /Applications/DAZ 3D/

And if I decide to remove it, does DIM also totally take care of that?

Er, How does one enable DS 2025 In the DIM? I haven't tried it yet, but I'm just wondering how to find it.

Not sure if the Apple OS upgrade to Sequoia 15.5 is responsible for this, but I just opened D|S 4.24.0.3 cold and clicked on Code66's AMC Converter and it did not cause Daz Studio to crash. Normally I have to go through at least one before it gets stable. I then found that the next set I had to do needed the Legacy Set Converter and again, perfect opening. No issues. Macs and Daz Studio, even if not DS6/2025 are getting along better.

I've also been pleasantly surprised with scripts; most don't work, while some do, but no crashes by attempting to run a script so far.
