Did you try to open the surface panel ? The name of a character is usually in the name of the files of a character's textures and it will likely also be in the name of the folder used to store the files.

If, let's say, you used Victoria 8.1's maps, hovering your mouse cursor over the diffuse map of the body surface should show you that path [Locatin of the runtime folder on your system]/Runtime/Textures/DAZ/Characters/Genesis8/Victoria8_1/Victoria8_1_BodyD_1003.jpg

G8.1 is backward compatible with G8, with a couple of exceptions (off the top of my head: expressions, geoshells, but it's fixable in both cases, and some clothes strangely set) but G8.1 specific content will not work on G8.

In short, you can use Victoria 8 morph and materials on G8.1F but you can't use Victoria 8.1 morph and materials on G8F.

I have uploaded a video of the entire node setup done as a sscreencapture, if anyone is interested.  I checked the nodes with Victoria, the Daz3D AI.  It's supposed to be fine, but I still cannot get the banded effect of a celshader.

Victoria 4, Vicky 4 and V4 are all the same figure.

You can use V4 in Daz Studio, just load her up, load her clothes, pose her, save her in a regular Daz scene file. There's no need to convert to weight mapping. But why would you bother? 

V4 was released twenty years ago, and replaced by Genesis fifteen years ago. That's one helluva long time in CG terms, and a lot of things have changed and improved. Sure, it's still possible to get great looking images with V4 figures, but only with a lot of extra work and skill applied that may be beyond a beginner.

If you want to use an older figure to keep costs down, consider using Genesis 8. There's a ton of content available for her, as her reign as the current Daz figure lasted almost as long as V4's did, and you can use a lot of G8.1 and G3 stuff on her with a little tweaking. A lot of people (myself included) still use G8 for most of their stuff, that's not true for V4.

For anyone who is curious how I worked with Daz3D's AI named Victoria, here is a screenshot of the AI guiding me through the horrifying mass (not mess!) of Bricks available in Shader Mixer.  There was one time I had to correct the AI on location of a particular brick.  There were many times when I had to clarify which brick and under which header.  I had to ask like a total noob .

So after a horrid time, I got this and it saves as a DBM format file but DS can't see it or use it.  I put the nodes here for anyone else who wants to fiddle with NPR celshader in iRay

Agatha is another lovely elderly lady. Virtual World also has a nice set of older male characters for G9 and for G8M. All of their characters are generally worth looking at and quite distinctive IMO.

Rawart has great human characters among the creatures, for example Ephraim, Big Lou, Vyktor, Marissa, Jemma...

Phoenix1966 is another vendor I would add to the list.

Daz has released 9 generations of figures so far starting from the first "Victoria" and "Michael" figures.
Generations 1 to 3 predate Daz Studio and were made for Poser only.
V4 was released in 2006 and was primarily made for Poser, though materials for DS were sometimes provided (3DL ones, Iray wasn't part of DS at the time). Same for Michael 4 and Kids 4.
Genesis 1 was generation 5 and the first one made specifically for Daz Studio, released in 2011. 

There are many technical differences between V4 and the Genesis line:

• V4 is in poser format (cr2 file)
• V4 is not weight mapped, the figure uses a type of rigging called parametric rigging. Genesis 1 and 2 are weigh mapped using a type of rigging called "TriAx", while G3, G8 and G9 use dual quaternions rigging.
• The morph system used is also different: V4 morphs are not all loaded and ready to use when loading the figure, you usually have to first "inject" morphs you wanted to use to activate the corresponding dial. Also, due to the rigging system the V4 base mesh is split into groups corresponding to the various bones, so some morphs can be "partial" morphs related to only one body part.
• Clothes don't follow V4 morphs automatically unless there's a matching morph in the clothes. There's a "transfer active morphs" feature in DS which can make the clothes follow active morphs in V4 but it's something you have to activate explicitly.
• You can't autofit clothes to V4. Autofit only works when the target figure is weight mapped. You can autofit clothes from V4 to Genesis line figures though (if you have a V4 clone for them).
• dForce didn't exist when V4 was the main figure (it was introduced during Genesis 3 time IIRC), so V4 clothes are not dForce-ready. There's nothing stopping you from applying a dForce modifier to them but the results will vary depending on how the clothes were built (among other things, dForce needs clothes to be welded and not have intersecting parts). Poser dynamic clothes made for V4 have a good chance of working well with dForce as they were intended for simulation in Poser cloth room (they load as static props in DS though).

"V4 for G2F" is a product which includes a morph for Genesis 2 female to look like V4 base, UVs so that G2F can use V4 textures, and an autofit clone to fit V4 clothes to G2F. The actual figure you use is Genesis 2 female so it has all the features of G2.

Regarding availability, the earliest generation figures (V1/2 and the first kids figures based on generation 2) are not available for sale anymore. The generation 3 base figures are still in the store, but a lot of content for them has been retired several years ago. V4 and all Genesis figures are still available and will likely continue to be available for now. 

And we'll probably get a Generation 10 figure at some point, but there's no set schedule for that.

not really sure its also seem to be affecting the victoria 8.1  character so i'm not sure what to find in the log file, my only idea is to uninstall the character fully and try again :(

Despite slightly mixed terminology, I would say context (asking about things "for G8", "G3", etc) makes it clear that the OP meant Core Characters (not Base Figures).

To clear up some slightly nebulous terminology:

Base figure: The underlying framework upon which characters are built. This includes Genesis 9, Genesis 8 Female, Genesis 3 Male, etc. It gets more complicated pre-Genesis when the base figure itself was also a character, such as Victoria 4 and before.

Core character: A premium character made by Daz's own in-house team, usually accompanied by a high profile launch and bundle releases. These characters tend to get more shape support on clothing releases. These characters follow a "Name-Number" format, and this list includes Victoria 9, Michael 8, Eva 7, Monique 6, David 5 etc.
Until Genesis 8.1, it was expected that there would be at least a few characters released that specifically built upon core characters as their underlying shape.

Daz Originals character: These naturally include the core characters, but a lot of characters published under the Daz Originals banner are not considered Core characters, even if they may get a high profile release and bundles (Caryn and Tobyn are examples, even in spite of some vendors mistakenly referring to them in add-ons as "Caryn 8" and "Tobyn 8") . These are characters made by vendors which Daz themselves have bought the full copyright to, rather than characters specifically made in-house or under commission as the core characters are. These characters instead follow a "Name for Base Figure" format.
