Why Centaurs?

Can someone demystify this for me? Why are centaurs apparently a thing in Daz Studio? I mean, it seems a strange and awfully specific niche... why are centaurs so numerous and not unicorns, a pegasus, satyrs, or any other mythical beasts?

  • Aren't there are many satyrs are centaurs? And with human bodies, or at least part of them, you can sell more clothing for them.

This is not a question I have seen before, but in short, look at the atributes that centaurs have that the other examples don't have.  A centaur is both a creatute and a person.... Centaurs marry the grace of beauty of horses with the human form.  A pegasus is just a horse with wings, a unicorn is just a horse with a horn... A satyr is a bit too much like a malformed person...    A centaur has all the alure of classical art and history, the power, beauty and grace of horses, and you get to use an attractive human character...

Short answer: it’s a sex thing.

Wouldn't that mean far more satyrs?

    Apparently not.

edit: to be a little more serious, I think Nemesis is basically right that centaurs are perceived more as majestic, whereas satyrs are more malformed. On top of that, horses are very strongly associated with sexuality, so a centaur is arguably a more natural extension of that than a satyr.

Are Centaurs really more of a thing than Minotaurs, Merfolk, Elfs, Faeries, Angels, Demons, Aliens, etc? I feel we have plenty of options to create any of those.

  • I like the centaur outfits, but I think I'd end up using the centaurs for silly puns. (And I have the Koshini and Ichiro ones for that.) Like using the black hole material from the Dark Matter shaders to make a centaur of gravity...

The Internaional Centaur Society probably paid a huge sum to promote centaurs again...

DAZ is such a sellout... just like J.K. Rowling who threw centaurs in with the Harry Potter series at the last minute when she had originally promised that role to Satyrs... Back in the 70s when George Lucas was offer 47 billion Drachmas (approximately $52 more or less) to have Darth Vader appear as a centaur he said no, mostly because he didn't see the action figures being as much fun play with, but mostly because he had some self respect back then... Even Progressive Insurance is jumping on the bandwagon with that "Motaur" commercial... which is stupid because what happens when he falls over or runs out of gas...

Yeah, they've been trying to make centaurs the new vampires for a while now and I fear soon enough they'll succeed... teens will give up that gothy vampire look and start wearing pantomime centaur costumes to be cool... Hot Topic will sell out in a second and start pushing those... there will be a Netflix series "Centaur Diaries" and every other romance novel will have the heroine getting jiggy with a hunky stud whom she only halfway through discovers is actually a centaur (I suppose he always wears a trench coat and only faces towards her, so she can't see the tail)...

Yeah, centaurs... get used to it.

I always thought it had more to do with weird equestrian fantasies and the anatomical accessories... do the Centaurs even have pro bundle bits?

They never wear pants... you think that would be a glaring omission.

    Simplest answer, Harry Potter fanart.

    I'm a bit baffled.

Happy, because I love centaurs and centaur content, but baffled because normally weird stuff I like isn't shared by most people and I have to sigh loudly about it. ;)

from what I heard on Facebook from those who do commisions  there is a huge demand for art featuring centaurs

There's something about the whole centaur category, to be honest; by far the most favourited of the various fantasy art I have on my deviantART is that featuring my "arachne" character (half human half spider in much the same way as a centaur).

That's despite the fact that I don't tag those pictures with the very commonly used term "Drider" (which is actually a specifically D&D term that doesn't fit my setting lore - being a portmanteau of "Drow" and "Spider", it refers specifically to that setting's dark elves).
I also don't publish anything explicit or even really particularly suggestive that would lure people in that way. There just seems to be something about that kind of hybrid in general.

  • Satyrs were in the Golden compass movie, which would have loved to seen a sequel too.

Centaurs were also in the Narnia movies too. I find both Satyrs and centaurs cool.

Hmm, have they become masters in their baiting skills? wink

And... You get to easily combine those centaur bodies with *all* your favourite headmorphs from the same generation. Which is slightly more problematic with horses, pegasi, unicorns and Satyrs' (Satyrs can get tricky because of the geografts for the horns). That's why Mermaids generally also do well: they work with all your favourite characters within the same generation as well.

I should mention I have been reading a lot of Madeline Miller and centaurs have been heroic characters for millenia....  Unicorns come pretty late in the mythic canon and satyrs were almost never heroes...

  • What bothers me is the physical illogic of Centaurs. The horse section already has four limbs, so where'd the human arms come from? They might as well have a horse's head alongside the human head.
Same with the Daz Dragon - four limbs PLUS wings? It's not natural!!

Seriously, though, I agree with myself. Dragons with wings as front limbs look awesome, and I wish I had one. I do, but I mean in real life.
My bottom line: I refuse to buy a six-limbed Centaur. I want a Centaur who walks on his elbows... I'm waiting...

^ Centaurs are actually neither horse nor human, but evolved insects. Six limbs.

Well to me Centaurs are very much an ancient art thing where supposedly people seeing horse riders for the first time thought it was one creature.

The number of depictions and sculptures in classical Greek and Roman art also lends to their romantisism.

I don't think any of the mythical creatures were particularly practical as likewise the stories of the ancient gods were rather contorted such being born from heads etc.

Intersting that you bring up the Darth Vader as a centaur proposal. In the original Star Wars they filmed a scene where Jabba appeared and he was a man. I think I saw it as an out-take somewhere. Since they didn't use it they had the chance to turn Jabba into how he appeared in the other films.

To go back to the original question, I think Daz put more effort in centaurs than unicorns and pegasuses (pegasi ?) because they have human faces and most people can relate more to them.
