Why Centaurs?

"Prince Planet" was my first exposure to the notion animated material could have a proper story arc, a beginning, a middle, and a definitive conclusion.  Compare that to American fare that was episodic, with each segment retaining the status quo.  But "Prince Planet" actually "ended" with his vanqiushing his recurring foes (pretty much by "killing" them) and when the crisis is over, he returned to his home world to claim the throne.  Even "Jonny Quest" a show that was serious and dramatic enough that it initally aired in primetime wrapped up every episode with his "family" ready to go on another adventure.  He never "grew up";  Dr. Zin was never arrested or killed in his schemes.  The episodes could be played in any order without it turning confusing.  (Mind you, I'm referring to the original early 60s series, not any of the follow-ups when practices had started to change.)  But early anime demonstrated, "Hey, things can and do eventually 'wrap up'."

Now, we see that as the norm for a lot of cartoons; but in the mid to latter 60s, it was mind blowing!

    Sincerely,

    Bill

^ Centaurs are actually neither horse nor human, but evolved insects. Six limbs.

It takes more than "six limbs" for something to be an insect. It also requires an exoskeleton. Centaurs (and dragons) are chordates.

Centuars can look various ways. I believe Achilles mentor, Chiron, who was supposed to be the wisest centaur had human front legs, and the rear part was the horse in some of the Greek imagery. I would share a picture, but those Greeks.... smiley

Thank heavens you corrected the crucial misinformation in that obviously very serious post.

    Re: pants...

Their primary purpose is to hide the anatomical elements, but the tail is necessary, so we're getting into something more like a lower belly band and chaps.

    Lots of chaps.

  • Ok, I have not laughed so hard in such a long time. The daz community's thought processes for how centaurs are created and how they should dress!!!! Hahhahaha, Ok here is my 2 cents on sad kitty pants NO WAY IN HELL! I would embrace the way of nature!!! If I was a half horse I would not wear anything at all except to stay warm in winter(maybe a bear hide turned inside out). If my horsey nudity scares you please look somewhere else! I mean what do you do if you have to pee? Ok, I gonna have nightmares over this!!! Oh, the people who brought up zena and the crazy lady who made a baby centaur? I would check her(the centaur mommy) into the crazy house. I'm pretty open minded but the horse lady is too much even for me!!!

Now, it might not just be a matter of offensive horsey nudity. A horse has, er, "forward pointing" anatomical elements, but it's a running creature, which means said anatomical elements could get caught up in the underbrush. Pants would solve that problem.

I mean what do you do if you have to pee?

A mechanism with a ripcord in range of the hands?

You've never seen a really good internet "how do we make a dragon" discussion, lol.

I would say that is too much information. I would call animal rights and tell them to watch these people more closely. hahaha

Things that make you go "hmmm...".  I missed this whole discussion about centaurs.  I have two questions and one observation:

Q1. Why do centaurs have belly buttons in the front, far away from the center of the body?  Given the strange shape of the body, I would think they would be at increased risk of umbilical impingement in utero. Horses' belly buttons are apprximately where human belly buttons are.

Q2. Why do centaurs have human hips situated well above the connection of the front legs to the rest of the body? Human hips arise form the shape of the pelvic girdle. Clearly, centaurs have no need for a pelvic girdle in the front as the scapula (shoulder blades) are the foward connection between the core of the body and the humerus bones in the front legs. Are they vestigial remanents?

O1. Centaurs must suffer from an extremely high rate of vertebral injuries. The almost 90 degree angle of the junction between the human part with the horse part, along with the unecessary lengthening of the human torso due to unecessary pelvic girdle in front, would put tremendous pressures on the spine in that area. The frequency of disc herniations alone would be amazing.

So do they visit the doctor or the vet?
