YIKES!!!! I grew up in Newfoundland and remember walking next to the tops of telephone poles to get to school. It wasn't unusual to see people on their roofs shovelling out the porch area of their houses. The winds are 18 mph right now but in the 70's winds hit 78 mph in Nfld. In Canada I also lived in Toronto for a few years, no snow ever, than moved 60  miles North to Barrie Ontario and felt as if I'd moved to the North Pole. Anyhow my aviary setup worked. The birds survived 31 now let's see if they can get past the 29 zone at 4-6 am.

Edit : Oh and my son is living in Tualatin Oregan. What are you cooking for dinner. lol

......a big batch of my special Italian sausage and mushroom pasta sauce which will get me through several days (I expect to see some kind of frozen precipitation this weekend so just going to hibernate until after the holiday).  There's wine to have with my dinners, whiskey and sherry for afterwards, Hot oats and sausages for brekkie, soups for lunch, I'm good through Boxing Day.

Forget about my son. Put mine in the oven. How long is the drive from California to Oregan????? I have to show this to my husband to prove that 'Boxing Day' is not "something only you guys (Canadians) have because to us (Americans) it's just a big return day."

Last week we went to Mimi's Cafe, a french restaurant and because they did not have anUltimate Long Island , I ordered wine. Before she left,  I notice a wine by the glass called 'The Seeker and asked her about it. Her face lit up while she informed me it was her favorite. She did not look like a wine drinker but than again neither do I, so I decided to trust her and order it. Due to my abusive childhood I typically trust very few people I have known for years, but decided to trust this waitress because resembled Adam Levine ... well not her head  her arms reminded me of Adam Levine. OMG. I went everywhere looking for this wine. Went back to Mimi's  ordered a meal and the wine but this time I asked to see the bottle first and asked where do you guys get this stuff, my neighbor would love this ( I don't know my neighbors). Apparently you have to be a restaurant to get it. :( .... So my husband found it online for 10.00 a bottle, which cheap me thought, maybe I'll buy Barefoot . . . but this wine was so-o-o-o good and I just found out my hubby ordered a case that is coming tonight. So I am apologizing in advance for anything I may regurgiate on any forums after I drink half a bottle what the heck, I'll drink an entire bottle because it's the eve of the eve of the eve, of Christmas Eve! Huge giant grin.

...yeah normally I'm one of those who couldn't tell a 10$ bottle of wine from a 100$ bottle of wine even of the same variety.  I do prefer an Italian Montepulciano from the Abruzzo region with pasta (the perfect wine for Pasta) but had to settle for a Merlot as the local Safeway only appeared of have Lambrusco, Chianti, and Pinot Grigo (and you never serve a light white with heavy pasta) all at prices more than I could or would afford to pay.

Now when it comes to Beer, Ale, Wodka, Bourbon Whiskey, Rye Whiskey, and Scot's Whiskey, I can be a somewhat of a snob.

...well pasta sauce is a simmering.  I give it about another hour for all the seasonings to do their work.

Received an alert from the transit system a short while ago for the possibility of freezing rain tomorrow morning (a day earlier than expected). Hopefully it will all be gone by the time I consider heading out for dinner and a few drinks later tomorrow.

Although the practice of the "Christmas box" is far older, dating from at least the17th century (it was mentioned in Samuel Pepys' diaries), Boxing day did not become an actual Bank Holiday until 1871.   The US declared independance in 1776, so 95 years previous to the official holiday being established.

BTW  December 26th is also St Stephen's day   so when Wenceslas went for that stroll with his page boy, loaded with presents it was the day after Christmas.

Another day, 68f and sunny outdoors.  They had predicted a chance of snow on Christmas but that changed, now it's just supposed to be cold.  I'll believe it when I see it.

Nothing going on, which is good.  Stress level is near zero for the first time in years. I'm now addicted to 'Top Chef'.. could be worse.

...sunny but only the mid 40s here today.  By this weekend highs will only be in the mid 30s with lows around freezing and water, in some form (possibly frozen), falling from the sky.   May need to do a stock up trip before Friday because most likely it will be freezing rain and I've already taken my allotted tumble for the year the other night.

Yeah, don't fall again!  You keep that up and we'll put you in a bubble wrap suit...

...well getting prepared to cook up the first big batch of my special pasta sauce tomorrow so managed to locate and unpack the box with the cooking and other kitchen supplies in it.

All my steel mixing bowls, from small to very large.

My large stainless steel strainer with stand.

My cheese shredder (important for shredding fresh cheeses which not only cost less but don't use cellulose non caking additives like pre shredded cheese does).

My big stockpot with steamer basket (I sense stew and homemade chili in the near future).

My two small stainless steel saucepans (now I can dedicate my enameled saucepan to just cooking rice).

    A second medium saucepan.

    My large pasta sauce pot.

    Various cooking utensils.

More flatware (get's old washing the same 2 spoons, forks, & knives all the time).

The rest of my chef's knives.

I finally feel my kitchen is properly equipped.

Sounds like you're ready to wok and roll! :-P

La de da, another chilly day. A lovely 43f outside right now, looks like a run of chilly nights and cold days for a bit.  I'm all stocked up on hot tea and miso soup, so it can freeze outdoors for all I care.  Final pre-Christmas grocery delivery tomorrow, lots of veggies, beans, cheese and burger-making supplies. Yes, I'm making bbq cheeseburgers for Christmas dinner!  But I've always been non-traditional, usually I have Chinese food but I decided to go Texan this time around.  Ground beef, ground pork, buns, cheese, pickles, lettuce.. sooooo tasty.

Broke out my pepper spray and stun gun in case Satan Claws tries to get in.  And just one reindeer would feed me for weeks.

...as I was blissfully asleep last night, suddenly at about 03:15, the building's alarms went off...again (this happened only a week ago just around midnight).  OK get shoes on grab coat grab keys to lock the apartment and get back in the building afterwards, and hobble down five floors of stairs out into subfreezing cold.   The fire department shows up and after about 20 min the alarms cease, so those of us by the SE corner entrance (the closest exit to our apartments) go back in.  I get back hang up the coat take of the shoes, toss the keys back in the bowl an the nightstand, crawl back into bed and just before I fall asleep they go off again.  This time I grab a a pair of jeans to pull over my pjs as my legs were still cold, go through the drill (shoes, keys, coat, lock door) and head to the stairwell when the alarm stops. Already fuming a bit, I turn to go back to the apartment, and before I can even unlock the door they start in again.

So now even less pleased,  I head back to the stairwell and notice a lot of smoke in that hallway I didn't see the first time (there are fire doors that close but not lock to isolate sections of each floor). I gathered whoever burned whatever at such an ungodly hour thought by opening these doors it would help air out their flat. Well, all it did was set the alarms off again.  So the firemen had to go back in again while we waited more in the cold (thankfully no freezing rain). Finally we ge the second "all clear" and I go back around  to the side door as everyone is trying to cram onto the lift by the lobby.  When I get there I discover the lift in that part of the building is still locked off and the fire department already had left.  So I had to go to another part of he building (going through the garage) to find a lift that was working as with my sore knee and other painful joints I was not about to climb back up those five floors of stairs .  By now it is after 04:00 and it took a while to get back to sleep (kept the coat, jeans with keys still in pocket, and shoes close by the bed just in case).

Didn't wake up until around 13:00.

Whoever caused this should buy me birthday dinner and drinks.

...yeah, was nice to do some real serious cooking last night.  Now have Pasta sauce for three more dinners (one which will be used on the holiday).

Cheezburgers, sounds excellent.  I make one using Texas BBQ sauce mixed and garlic mixed into the ground beef (grass fed 93% lean).  Top it off with Bacon, Mushrooms, Carmelised Onions, and Swiss cheese on an Onion Kaiser roll with a side of skillet Fries (don't deep fry any more and they don't taste right heating them in the oven).

    Birthday thoughts to KK.

I think I've seen the last of the good weather for this year.  I did get my car down the driveway and made my trip uptown.  But..., I forgot that the garbage transfer station is closed on Friday's now, along with Monday, Wednesday and Sunday. (our taxes not at work) frown.  So, I have ripe garbage in my car trunk for a while. indecision  Had my good fish lunch at Red Lobster,  Stopped in at Sears and bought a nice pair of wool boot socks on sale to replace my holey ones.  While I was out, a cold front came through and all the moisture in the air turned to heavy fog so it was interesting getting home.  Now the fog has turned to rain and by morning will be ice on the trees and roads and my driveway. sad  Snow is predicted for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday and cold through the rest of the week.  So, I think I'm shut in for a while, but I now have groceries.  Yea!  It's a good thing it's going to be cold or that garbage in my trunk could start to be a problem! surprise

A sunny 94 F here, just west of Sydney at a little after 1330, and it is not likely to reach 100. Tomorrow, (Christmas Eve, here in Australia), will only be a couple of degrees warmer, so no need to use the A/C. Christmas Day is expected to be cooler, in the eighties. Not so much a White Christmas, as a Bright Christmas.

It's interesting that we rarely hear about the weather from our Canadian members. Or are you huddled around a fire? Just kidding! I love Canada, and travelled there a lot. Your gardens, in Spring, are the most beautiful I've ever seen.

Oh, if we're talking food, for lunch I had a very nice lobster; thank you to the brave trawler men in Maine who caught it!

  • Yep!  Bad weather has set in.  A little late though.  I expected ice this morning when I got up but it was continuing to rain until about 11:45 AM when it all of a sudden turned into snow.  Lots of snow.  Heavy gloppy snow.  And the temperature is falling fast.  By tonight it's expected to fall to 16F  (about -8C).  Snow for the next three days, then just cold, cold cold.
