Christmas Complaint:  I spent most of the afternoon futzing around with Windows10 Mail program.  I swear that it's the most boogered up major utility I've ever encountered. angry  I'm trying to learn how one establishes a new Windows10 "Microsoft" account rather than a "local" account.  It seems so easy, just create a new user account using a valid "outlook.com" or "hotmail.com" mail address (or other email address) as a login name and it should set up your computer login account and your corresponding account in the Mail program and give you access to the Microsoft Store, and other the other goodies that a valid "Microsoft Account" is advertised to provide.  But for the life of me I can't get the native Windows10 "Mail" application to work consistently.  It gives the infuriating message "Something went wrong -- cannot connect".  Yet I can connect directly using a web browser to www.Outlook.com then log into the on-line mail account and see my test messages residing in the inbox but the blasted Win10 "Mail" app never sees them.  Nor will it send messages.  Grrrrr.....  angry

I think I need to finish the rest of that bottle of champagne. enlightened

...wow began downloading items for install and tapped out my C Drive (only 256 GB).  Didn't realise that the average size for the IBL skies bundle are around 650 MB each.(and there are 7 per each product for  42 files)  Was actually down to about 200K on C: when I looked at it after getting "download failed" errors.

Forgot that the DIM places files in the Documents folder after installing.  I like having a backup in case something goes wrong (like happened yesterday with G2F when for some reason only the head and a foot poses showed under Poses in the parameters which messed up a scene when I loaded it).

Moving everything (about 122 GB) to the a downloads backup folder on the larger drive. Wonder if there is some way to re-direct files there after they install.

  • I'm 3 GB away from eating up my 460 GB drive as well. :\

Clearly what I needed all along was a terabyte SSD.

Watched kevin Hart's 'What Now?' 2016 on NetFlix. It was so-o-o funny. The guy is absolutely insane.

..yeah, still have about 27 min to go moving to the backup folder.  Have recouped about 64 GB of disk capacity on C: so far.  Crikey those Iray texture utility content files also take up a lot as well, some close to 750 MB.

I install everything (5k of DAZ products) on an external drive on one pc and it works as well as the one that has everything on the internal hard drive. I find a huge difference between the SSD 2TB external and the WD 2 TB externals. Have had several 3TB WD externals fail. If you value your data SSD is the way to go.

...if you can affrod them. Even a 1 TB SSD is still around 350 - 400$ whereas a 7200 RPM HDD of the same capacity is about 1/5th that these days.

Can get them for about $250. I just did.

    ...but how reliable?

..and still about 3 x more expensive than a 1 TB HDD.  Keep in mind some of us are on extremely limited budgets.

  • Crucial MX300 is cheap and fairly close to Samsung 850 EVO in terms of performance and reliability.

...339$ at Newegg is about 1/3 of my monthly income.  Don't do biz with Amazon for certain reasons.

On the previous note recouped more than half the total drive space and back to the download/install marathon again.

  • I'm not actually trying to convince you to buy a hard drive. I'm pointing out for anyone who ever reads this convo in the future that you can get one for much less than $350-400.

...well all the downloading is done.  Now on to installation.

All this 3D and 2D stuff takes up the most space.

Boxing day complaint: Arghhh..., I've been working on a customer's Windows10 system and was just about finished when after hours of working properly and sitting idle (both it and I), I looked over and noticed that the slide show screen saver wasn't working.  An error message in tiny print says "An error is preventing this slide show from playing".  OK, no big deal, look it up on the Web, right?  Oh, goodie!  Lots of similar messages from as far back as 2009. frown  I finally found one for Windows10 and it explains how to rebuild the picture library index.  BUT, the instructions aren't completely accurate.  In the version of Win10 that I have, the "Library" folder is not directly visible in the user's home folder like it is in Win7, and the instructions for making it visible are meaningless.  After some hunting I did finally find a "Library" folder in the hidden files.  The fix that worked for me requires making the “Hidden” files visible, and navigating to “c:\\Users\<user>\AppData\Microsoft\Windows\Libraries\Pictures” then clicking on the “Manage” button under “Library Tools” (or was it Picture Tools"?) , then selecting the “Default” choice and letting it rebuild the library index. Take these instructions with a grain of salt! I don't remember exactly what I did or why it worked but it did. Happy, but confused!  Why do they keep making things more complicated?   What was wrong with naked and swinging from trees? devil

'Nother complaint:  Still snowing and temperature this morning is 27F on its way down to 8F for about 36 hours. frown
