I DO wish there was a 'hide this from future searches.' I often pick up freebies just to clear them from the store, but now I'm going to have to be more careful least I give Daz the wrong idea about my support.

DAZ, you're pushing away a long time customer with this.  I'm not going to mention how many products I bought from DAZ or how many pages my Product Library is, but my first purchase from DAZ was 5 Oct, 2000. (And I bought stuff from them before that when they were still part of Zygote.)

I just unticked the renewal box for my PClub membership. I really could have used that toll booth but I won't use DAZ Connect.  I paid for the perk of getting  a usable weekly freebie and DAZ setting it as DC/encrypted-only feels like a violation of the contract.  It probably isn't a legal violation, but it is an ethical one to me. It'll be a while before my PC membership expires so please give me a reason to change my mind and set my account back to auto renewal.

    ......

    Ditto. Also my sentiments exactly.

Weekly freebie is out.. nice toll booth. But guess what? Encrypted! Nice, Daz :(

Unfortunately, I had already "purchased" this item before coming to the Forums.  I have just filed ticket #211407 asking for a refund and removal from my product library.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention.  I can't trust a company that is not up front with its customers.

It's a Daz Original, not a PC+ item, and it may be in response to the person, or persons, in this thread who was/were asking for a completely free encrypted item to test it out at no cost... Except you have to be a PC member to get it for free...
    sad

I'll put it in my cart. I can't use it for now, but at some point, I will upgrade to 4.9, (or maybe 4.10 by the time I get my new computer.)

Still, I hope this is an isolated incident, because all of them being for Encrypted DAZ Connect/4.9+ will greatly devalue my PC membership.

It is marked as PC+ and is the free weekly PC+ item.  I want it replaced with an item that conforms with DAZ's enticement to be a PC+ member.

Well, at the risk of repetition (but not speculation, because that would be, well, speculative) I, like many others, want the option to filter the store on DRM content; a check box "Exclude DRM'd Products" that sticks between sessions would be fine. Even better is a special icon overlaying the product thumbnail in the bottom right corner. I suggested a padlock before, but how about a little pile of rotting fish bones?

Check again; it isn't marked PC+. While getting the weekly freebie is one of the PC+ perks, the items themselves are usually not a PC+ item and revert to their store normal sales status after a week. None-the-less I would really appreciate it being replaced or made available outside of DAZ Connect

Pretty bizzare that a product which claims it does not support Poser would include a CR2 file. I assume when the unnamed PA created this he/she intended it for both DS and Poser, but DAZ in their wisdom picked it as a good candidate for a Connect Only encrypted product, except of course it is only partially encrypted. Maybe we need a new install type : Connect Only, Partially Encrypted, Some Poser support

I just hope that Daz is only counting actual downloads.

I might have "purchased" this one, as I am in the habit of snagging all of the freebies without pulling their pages up, on the philosophy "Well, I might not need it now, but who knows?"

So this could easily have counted as a purchase.

So, where's my weekly freebie, as I cannot use this on my art computer (not online)?

I still think a better idea would be my trenchcoat suggestion. Dammit, I really want that trenchcoat!

And now I want the tollbooth, too.

    Dammit, Daz!

And mark the freakin' ICONS as encrypted, okay? It won't hurt the DRM scheme, but it WILL help the customers!

Apparently it's not even partially encrypted. I think I'm remembering right that encrypted .duf files have a different extention to indicate their nature. All in all, pretty weird. A mistake somewhere surely. Either it wasn't supposed to be listed as Encrypted only, or it was supposed to be encrypted before release. The former is forgivable, mistakes happen. The latter on the other hand would involve stripping out poser compatibility for the sake of DRM, and that I take issue with. I may not use Poser anymore, but stripping out already available compatibility (not just export through DSON, but native poser file format compatibility) is deliberately crippling a product no matter what your opinion of DRM or Connect is.

It is more than an encryption problem.

It is now a PC+ rewards and terms problem.  I think that is a different discussion altogether and one that should be held in the PC+ forum between the members.  Not buried in this free for all.

Agreed. I amongst many others put the toll booth in my cart accidentally. That's something the marketing people need to realise. That's if they really do want the truth ;)

File a ticket so management knows there is a problem.  We've been told repeatedly they do not read the forums.

I'm kind of shocked how many people feel so strongly about DRM and aren't looking extremely closely at every single product and daily offer / banner that's being released before putting it in their cart, whether they want it or not o.o

(This is not criticising anyone; merely an observation based on user posts)

...this was not expected with the usual weekly freebie. I only spotted it myself after it was in my cart as well, since I usually click the cart icon from the thumbnail on store page for freebies. This is an old practise many of us have.

It should also have been indicated in the newsletter.  This is why an icon on the thumbnail would be really helpful.

Mods are understandably rather busy at the moment - please be patient until they get around to it :)

Some of us might question the rationale behind the last merger anyway, if we were prone to speculation. I suppose it does keep all of the anti-DRM sentiment nicely pigeon-holed away in one thread.

Probably also the reason why they un-stickied this thread. They're hoping to bury it and hide all the negative publicity wink.

+! They will humor us until such time that this gets to loud and then the thread will be closed and any mention of DRM will be treated by the powers that be and other fanatical daz fans as being a dead horse and say we need to put our foil hats back on and to get back in the closet and close the door.

I'm not closing the door; I'm closing my wallet, trust, and goodwill.

I don't like the encryption, either, as it stops me from fixing and customizing settings in files but I might even put up with that if I could bloody well keep my current content organization intact.  DO NOT TELL ME I CAN MAKE A GAZILLION SHORTCUTS TO FAKE THINGS.  I use several Runtimes to keep things sorted the way I need them. I regularly create and blow away Runtimes when I'm done with them. I have over 30 different folders for install files so I can easily find what I want to install.  I don't remember products by name or vendor so looking through an alphabetical list is useless for me.  Sorting through a list of what someone else considers fantasy vs. sci-fi or whatever is useless because I won't always agree with the 'official' selections.  It would take days or weeks for me to tag all of my purchases so I could find them.  (Over 15 years worth of purchases = lots of stuff to tag.)

I buy, I download directly into a categorized folder, I install to the correct Runtime and I'm done.  (If the vendor did a lot of vanity folder garbage, I strip it out and resave the .zip so future installs are cleaner.)  It's almost as fast as using DC but I don't have to spend a ton of time trying to figure out where DAZ thought my purchase should go then tagging, making shortcuts, etc. to get things in a semi-workable state.

Again, for those of you that like the new organization system - great.  Mazel Tov.  I'm unsarcastically happy for you.  Just stop insisting that I'm an idiot or a Luddite because the system you like doesn't work for me. I don't consider you dumb for liking the new organization system so I'd appreciate the same level of respect in return.

    Thanks.

In the quest to make things easier for new users, they should remember that more experienced users want to continue using methods and have access to features that they've gotten used to using. Sometimes removing old features is unavoidable or even desirable, but Connect strikes me as an attempt to implement an 'easy mode' for content management. Which is fine. I actually like connect other than some not so minor technical issues that your tech people are getting an earful of. But the Connect Only content can be taken as a means of forcing adoption of this 'easy mode' which is not cool. I can understand where it's related to the encryption, though that is a problem in and of itself. I just want to strongly suggest that there never come a time where unencrypted content is deliberately released as Connect Only as the only feature that could possibly come from that is a rather questionable sort of convenience. (Though at least for those who like working in 'expert' mode, the non-encrypted Connect content does install in neat little single folders that can be modifiied to taste, zipped for backup and moved to wherever works for you. Sorta saves the step of unzipping to a new folder to fix vanity folders and such. Just have to zip it up for backup when done. Oh, and probably tell connect that you've unistalled it after you've done what you needed to since that'd likely leave an empty folder where it expects to find something.  About the only issue would be not having the metadata one gets from DIM, but if you're not bothering with the Smart Content, that's usually not an issue, I think.)

  • I would like the toll booth freebie but it is encrypted. I'm paying for my membership. Can we get the freebie unencrypted for a price? I'm no pirate. I'm willing to pay to buy what I want, but I won't do DRM. If this continues I will drop my membership. I keep getting my posts deleted. I'm not saying anything that is a flame. Why?

If this was the norm, then yes, we would be addressing it.. but as I said, I believe this is just a test.

So, if I leave this "freebie" in my library without downloading it...I'm "voting" for encryption?

I just figured it would be easier to leave the item in my library as it didn't cost me anything. BUT if this is a how does encrypted sell based on sales...not how many server downloades...it sounds like it's a vote for encryption which makes me rethink just letting it sit in my product library list.

Go ahead and file a ticket on it even if it does take a bit of extra time.  Let the powers that be know how you feel.

  • I wasn't thrilled when the PC killed the 1.99 items. I hardly ever use both monthly discounts because 1 excludes PC items and the other excludes new releases. It always ends up being cheaper to pay the sale price and not use the coupons. Now, you want me to upgrade to 4.9 just to download a PC freebie that' s not even encrypted?

    Strike 3, Daz.

The thing is, with the Toll Booth, I was also ready to pick up that rather handy street scene. I had them both in the cart. Then, when I saw that the Toll Booth was DRM'd - out they both went. Because, without speculating, the status of products in store has been seen to change when mistakes are made, and mistakes sometimes are not spotted right away.

I can understand your sentiment, but it would be a shame to miss on on the street scene, which is so worth the money compared to many other products here and elsewhere. The PA of the street scene had no control over the unfortunate timing of his release with this crippled freebie.

True, but it's a DAZ original, so the PA has already received his cut. I plan to wait the requisite 48 hours to allow any mistakes to be corrected and then, if its status remains the same, I will probably purchase it.

By all means wait - thats fine... however I can say the product install types (Connect, DIM and Manual) are correct.

I was unable to download it Manual, so this too was false information.  If Mama ain't happy, ain't no one happy.  This mama is extremely unhappy with the company's actions.  I've already filed a ticket on this and the mods will probably be very busy removing my posts.  Have an unhappy day, y'all.

We should all be super serious and well behaved.

Geez, I suppose you want me to wear a tie and not pee on the potted plant in the corner too?  That's asking a lot.

But it's probably why I only posted once in this thread so far... Like my imaginary friend used to say, "If you don't have anything nice to say about encrypted content, stop wearing that pantomime gorilla costume"... And I think that true about most things in life...

Besides its not like anything I'd ever say, mention or suggest to DAZ3D would ever be taken serious, considered or deemed worth more than a thimble full of amoeba farts, so why bother... This thread and all the others like it that went before, for all they worth, is just one step above slapping a "Thoughts and Suggestions" sticker on a paper shredder and leaving it out in the hall, with a "Thank you for your input!" sticker on the collection bin...  Nice that you have somewhere to put them, but ain't gonna change nothin, yeah?

Its not like this thread is a sticky anymore... It's been cut away to float off downstream and be forgotten, like a bear poop in a mountain brook... I probably could of come up with a better analogy, but I'm feeling lazy.

The great thing about the internet is that you can piss off boatloads of customers and more than likely new ones will come along and nobody will know or notice anything was wrong... Whereas in the past real stores had a more or less limited supply of customers and if you pissed enough off, you saw a result... Besides with all this expansion into game content and possible income from 3D printing, the plain old Studio segment is probably looking a little tired and old, the place to put the money is probably not on a generation of people who think DRM, encryption, and subscriptions are wrong, but a new generation who is growing up with that as standard operating procedure.

    We are all replaceable.

But yeah, I should be well behaved and I do feel bad about peeing on that plant, but serious?... Seriously, as serious as this subject is, nothing will seriously come from our complaints or me being serious and though I've seriously considered being serious, all I can do is to just think of comedic, satirical replies to most of the posts here and seriously try to not post them.

Its not that I think we shouldn't voice our opinion on this, it's just that I don't think it really matters...

The real issue here is that now that it's been shown to not be actually encrypted, the 'test' nature of this is completely invalid.  People, ESPECIALLY pirates, will download it asap, so they can get it before the encryption gets turned back on.  I daresay they've already got it.

Furthermore, as multiple posts can attest to, many picked it up without even checking to see it was encrypted....since it was a freebie to PC members.  But now they are returning it, since they don't want to be considered 'supporting' DRM.  But I'd be willing to bet that they won't include 'returns' in their numbers.....just sales.

And a lot of people (not on the forums) probably did the same.....and may not have noticed it was supposed to be encrypted, and since it isn't, they won't EVER notice.  Which means the 'sale' doesn't accurately represent whether or not they support the DRM/Encryption.

POOR test design, and poor test implementation.

Edited to add:  Richard posted only seconds after.   Glad to hear this was simply a mistake.  Still don't support DRM, though.

This was a case of wires getting crossed, there was absolutely no intention to deprive PC+ members of their promised benefits so the product will be fixed to work as a standard download. There may well, in future, be special Connect-only encrypted freebies but they will not be the PC+ monthly or weekly freebies.
