Daz I am proud of you. This is a very satisfying  compromise. though i will not be purchasing encrypted content at least i know if I live long enough that it will be  available sometime in the future as a Zip or dim file and it will be in my wishlist until then...

I am truly looking forward to you implementing the option to, op out of using the daz connect file systems. when that happens then I will be happy to upgrade my studio software. other wise  thank you for listening to our suggestions  this goes a long way in restoring faith.

    Back to fun and games

You can just use DIM with 4.9.  It works fine. (other than for encrypted files)

       Steve

Thanks for the suggestion Steve , But.when I loaded 4.9  into my lap top as away to test it  this weekend, to see how it installed the content folders that I heard everyone complaining about. I seen it was creating  a new file systems for daz connect and making duplicate files of everything I had organized  by groups, model types.etc . I don't use daz connect so please give us a option to op out of using it.   I have my files system set up to support  many types of 3d software in 4 different external drives. 2 drives I use for share content for daz studio and poser. and poser does not use daz connect.

I also could not get daz4.9 to recognize my G) and F) external content drives because for some reason studio kept saying it need to create a file system in those drives which I wasn't going to let happen because of my manually manage  content.  But 4.9 did not ask to create a directory in my Maya & 3ds content e) drive as it did for my poser/daz content g) & f) drives..

So for now I'll wait until there is some kind of op out option during the installation of the studio software, So I can op out of the  daz connect file management.  which I would so greatly appreciate. its taken me years to get my drives and content folders organized and know where i can find things in a snap using my own content search systems.  I know you guys were trying to make things easier for new customers.  But sometimes you guys forget about us old folks that have been doing this a long time and have certain ways fo doing things. like I said its taken me years to get my content folders to works for all my 3d software not just daz studio.  Sooo please give us a op out option for installing the daz connect file system. if I'm not using Daz connect why do I need to install the suporting file sytem.

  • What software doesn't have features that each of us doesn't use? How many people use the 3D painting and rendering features in Photoshop? I don't use Dynamic Clothing in Studio, LIE, or Shader Mixer/Baker, and yet I've never felt the need to request that a separate version of Studio be made available without them or attempt to remove those features myself. You really run the risk of screwing something up when you try to edit software and the disk space or RAM that you'll save even if you're successful is never worth it.

If the application has been designed and coded in a properly modular fashion, this is actually not hard to do.  You just compile one with the modules and one without.  This is how sofware becomes available in "lite", "standard", and "whooha, shiny!" versions.

Could we please stop this whole "I don't use so no one should have it" train of thought please? I know plenty of people who DO use it and DO like it.

I don't think anybody here has suggested that any art related features be removed from DS just because the writer/poster doesn't use them.  What people are on about is that non-art-related stuff is being jammed in.

Nobody jump on me, please.  I still haven't made up my mind.  I am just advocating for angels and devils equally, because that is how I will decide for myself whether or not I like broccolli, carrots, and brussel sprouts.  angeldevil

  • i don't plan to purchase encrypted materials from Daz. Products have always been a bargain and i have been a buyer since the late 90s. Encryption doesn't deter piracy. it only burdens honest buyers. I'll start adding to my licensed Daz collection once this encryption nonsense is abandoned. Why should it take 12 months to roll back this mistake? Stop stalling. i'll be over at Turbo Squid and Renderosity till then. Give me a call when you come to your senses Daz.

For me ease of use, time saved, moving things in and out as I need them without having to leave studio IS an art related feature because it facilitates me saving time and being able to do more art related things.

DAZ_Steve, I think the biggest part of the issue many long time users have with Connect is the fact that they would have to start DAZ Studio just to install content rather than a smaller program like DIM.

On the other hand, if youn want to install something (a new product, or an item you suddenly realise you need for the current scene, or an item you have uninstalled since using it in the saved sceen you want to open) you have to close DS, wait to make sure the CMS link has been closed, open DIM, wait while it populates its lists (takes a while for me), install, close DIM, wait on the CMS link, start DS. Of course that's more an agument for coexistence of the two than switching wholly to Connect, but it is a benefit of Connect for experienced users - and the more so the bigger your catalogue of items.

I keep DIM open all day and all night and only close it if I have to reset for windows update or T-storms in the area and I shut it all down. I do, however, close studio if I realize I want to install something--though not always and I've never had trouble that I know of. Could I still keep DIM going all the time in 4.9?

DIM and Studio (4.9 included) can both be run at the same time. I wouldn't recommend installing things in both Daz Connect and DIM at the same time (don't cross the streams), but as long as you avoid that you shouldn't run in to any problems. The issue we have seen is when users close DIM right before they start Studio, it causes the CMS to start shutting down when DIM closes and when Studio starts and tells the CMS to start the CMS ignores that command because it is already shutting down.

As for Connect's folder, any possibility of having multiple locations? As of now if I 'started over' and used Connect only, I'd have well more than a terabyte of data to store in one location. Unfeasible.

Daz Connect will read content from the connect folder on any mapped path. It will only write to the currently chose Daz Connect path, but after you fill a drive with content you can switch that path to a new drive and it will download everything new to there.

I neutered daz connect and its file directory in 4.9  today using the registry . which i did first in my snoop gear sandbox before installing daz4.9 to my systems

I found a very simple way to remove the daz connect files & its directory out of my computer. & I was able to get rid of a few more very annoying things with just using regedit. (( First I caution I would not recommend to anyone go into their registry if they did not know 100% what they were doing. and are familiar with registry files you can really mess things up. and knowing a little about c+++ doesn't hurt ))

First thing I hated that daz 4.9 was making itself the default software out my 4 different installed daz programs I have, So first registry file Called (default) removed Daz 4.9 as the default software and just left it blank. so daz4.9 wouldn't over ride all my other daz4. programs files i may use and save in projects.

Next  the file {AnonymousSats} changed it from true to false.

Next  I hated that file Directory " Daz connect content" that i could not even delete manually out my c/ document folder. without reappearing every time you start 4.9    So deleted the registry file called (ContentDir) which registers the data to C:\Users\Documents\DAZ 3D\DAZ Connect . which removed the file after removing it out of the registry ( see picture attachment 1. )

The InstallPath-64   I changed it to   C:\Program Files\DAZ 3D\DazStudio4  and removed 4.9 . I did this so it will recognize all daz4 programs not just daz 4.9  this is helpful if you decide you want to delete 4.9 out of your c/drive and leave daz4.8 intact. if you try to uninstall 4.9 it will uninstall the 4.8  files found in User/appdata/local/daz  which will mess with your daz4.8 icons on your saved project  files. and icons in your daz studio content folder that you may have for daz.48.

Under the NVIDIA folder there is a Sub-folder call cloud. open it and set the (server secure) file to (true) it was set to(false.) which has to do with that beta cloud panel if your not using it secure it.

    What I archived today.

I can run & render daz 4.8 & 4.9 at the same time.  which will be great for building scenes when i am rendering my animations. ( see picture attachment 2 )

Daz 4.9 is no longer the default software if your like me and use different Studio versions because of file formats or forever reason.  I like to use 4.5 for lip sync  ( see picture attachment 3. )

The Number# 1 the biggest thing is now  the daz connect file directory is now gone out my documents completely and does not reappear every time i start daz 4,9

To test my changes I've loaded some very large pre-made scenes & rendered 6 images with no runs, drips or errors.  no issues at all  and all plugins work accept animated texture scripts by dragonstorm.  and my BVH convertor script. to create aniblocks out of poser bvh files (which I expected because it was made for daz 4.5)

Other than that  4,9 now runs and looks just like daz 4,8..  just with the new improvements and upgrade to Iray that 4.8 don't have. and no daz connect file directory  :)

I hope this helps you Daz_guys see first hand my files sytems & why I am so particular about how things get installed to my computer.

Have a great day and thanks for the challenge.

PS: Officially for the record I will never buy any encrypted products or use daz connect for my content management. Though forgivingly I can compromise with the 1 year wait for those products to become unencrypted if you can wait 1 year for my money when i buy it unencrypted.

A couple of things I want to point out here, as I'm really concerned you're going to cause yourself problems by hacking registry settings without knowing what they are,

The "(Default)" value (REG_SZ) within the Studio4* key in the registry has nothing to do with which version of DS is the default one. Its a byproduct of the OS moving from the 16-bit world to the 32-bit world and the registry gaining new capabilities, such as storing data in formats beyond simple strings, and storing multiple pieces of data under a single key, using a name to distinguish them.  To actually set the default program, use the Windows functionality ( the default is just the last version installed.

You don't need to hack the registry to do this.  Edit > Preferences > General > Feedback > Participate in DAZ Studio Improvement Program.

Edit > Preferences > Content Library > Content Directory Manager, change the "Daz Connect" to one of your "Daz Studio Format Content Folders" and then you can delete the default location.  It still won't have any files in it if you never log into Connect.  The registry value you deleted will just come back if you ever use the Content Directory Manager to change your DS-format or Poser-format content folders.

This feature is only used if you use Iray's cloud rendering feature.  It has nothing to do with whether something is secure when not in use.  It's the equivalent of typing "https:" or "http:" in your browser to indicate whether the cloud rendering service uses the SSL protocol or not, and the value is as meaningless if you never use that feature of Iray as whether a site uses https or http if you never open your browser.

I'm glad that it seems to be mostly working for you, but I wouldn't recommend this to anyone, as I would be amazed if it doesn't cause you problems down the road, and will ensure that no one will be able to help if it does.  The things you want to do can actually be done without hacks (and most of your hacks don't actually do what you think they're doing -- AnonymousStats is the only one that does, and all you had to do was say No to the DS Improvement Program, which you can do at any time).

This may be done in some cases, but a lot of software these days with Free/Lite/Pro versions are actually identical when shipped. The software then uses your registration id/key to determine which features you can use, and enables/disables them appropriately.

A very old vendor trick.  IBM mainframes (the IBM System 360) came in several models for which IBM charged different prices.  In some cases, the only hardware difference between the more expensive model and the cheaper one was a single jumper.

Not really Connect or encryption related but your avatar makes it seem you are bored alla time. But then, DAZ_Steve reminds me of Kung Fu Panda...

Take Carrara and Bryce as examples of that.

Mike I appreciate the concern I guess your assuming I I don't know anything about computers and that is okay. .Everything i did, accomplished everything I wanted changed. I know what can be changed and shut off in the preference setting that was not good enough & I'm not going bother to get into details about the inner workings of computers we both know.  lets say I am  a nerd that is very OCD about having empty files in my computer I don't use, want, or can't delete. I am very OCD about how stuff is installs, runs and located on my computer.  plus I did not want 4.9 to over right my 4.8 files. So I found a solution by looking at daz  in a vitual machine sandbox first. and made my own changes. which works out for me actually very well

So anyway with that said I would say I was served a bowl of poetic justice this afternoon. I got a good bonus Friday and spent it  on I upgrading my Power supply and my Ramm this morning  and my computer was running like a rocket . I just got done my window experience rating and got a incredible 7.8  so after running a while and playing with a few resource intensive programs then some bench testing. &  I went to close it up, and  i accidently closed my #`1 top 300mm tower fan wire in side door panel and pinched it,  which caused a arc like a lightening bolt. and proceeded to burned out my fan / cooling control module and the wire harness it was plugged into before i could unplug it ..GRRRRR stupid stupid stupid!  it was  a black fan wire so I totally didn't see.     anyway my system can't run with out this cooling/ fan control module, which lucky is only $29 bucks . But unfortunately  it was something i had to order because my computer store didn't have one so it won't be here until Wednesday     So I'm stuck on this lap top. ..lol Anyways I hope your days going better than mine.

I don't mind waiting. I have been doing a lot of that lately anyway. Unless it's something I just can't live without waiting a year isn't a problem. Thank you Tim and thank you DAZ for at least giving us a change sooner.

  • I'll continue to support DAZ and the fabulous vendors but I won't invest any money in any encrypted content nor use Connect at all.

I supported DAZ buying ALL the generation 3 people... then they later were offered for free. I supported DAZ by buying ALL the generation 4 people and then they were later offered for free. I've been a Platinum Club member when you actually got perks and nowadays when perks for members are rare and only a step above what non-Platinum members get as a savings.

Will I now be catering myself to all DAZ needs by investing time and headaches into this stupid Encryption concept that says to me "DAZ does not trust you, but we're happy to take your money." NO! It's dumb dumb dumb.

But I'll continue to buy non-encrypted content that can be downloaded with DIM.

  • now do I need to understand how encryption works on a software I use since 2006?, now I will look for an amazon book entitled "Encryption in archives for Dummies"

I tought DazStudio was intended for play with figures posing, adding props, lights and rendering.

Don't deviate from the main goal, concerns about encryption must/should be focused on the tech savvy people, I don't need to know how a lamborghini motor works, only I know I will go to work faster than a Toyota, is all I need.

A couple of things I want to point out here, as I'm really concerned you're going to cause yourself problems by hacking registry settings without knowing what they are,

DRM Encryption still equals no deal for me. Not happening. Won't purchase unless unencrypted and I can install manually or through DIM.

As an aside, yes - right-click should give a More Info... command which will open the readme in DS.

Richard, I liked this feature for awhile in DS 4.9 Beta... however I'd be totally happy if I had the ability to have an external browser to do this instead.

Hold down the ctrl(Win)/cmd(Mac) key when you click More Info - there are a couple of options, Product Library page or readme, DS browser or OS browser.

Thanks Richard, Once I install the latest Beta I'll give it a try. Still getting my feet wet using Studio.

Richard, I tried ctrl + left click and ctrl+right click neither of did nothing. Note that I work offline only which might be the cause of it not working.

I'm wondering how accurately the patrons of this forum represent the totality of DAZ users. Really, no rhetorical question, I've got no idea.

Yet I think that a company like DAZ, with a sales formula that proved quite effective for so many years - software free, good models at affordable prices, vaste-scale diffusion - might be willing to guesstimate how well the DRM is (or would be) accepted not only upon the few ones who spontaneously volunteer their point of view here but rather upon the largest statistical sample available to them, their customers.

A simple poll would do, maybe attached to a regular new product ad: a few clear, concise and honest lines of what the DRM is and how it may change the user's habits, a few links to pages where more can be found on the topic, then a straightforward half-a-question followed by some crossable boxes, such as for instance:

    I will/would purchase DRM-protected DAZ products...

    1. [   ] ... with pleasure. It was about time you did something against 3D piracy!

    2. [   ] ... quite as usual. As long as the performances aren't affected I don't give a damn if a DRM is there or not

    3. [   ] ... only if the protection expires after [   ] months or less

    4. [   ] ... only if the price is encouraging (that is, [   ]% of what it would cost unprotected or less)

    5. [   ] ... reluctantly, only if the product is extremely appealing and isn't available in any other form

    6. [   ] ... never. And I mean it.

    7. [   ] ... huh??? Perhaps I should ask my grandson...

Of course the phrasing matters and should be reprocessed by a PR specialist smiley, however please keep in mind that honesty and clarity are winning atouts.

P.S.: I strived to pretend impartiality whereas I'm actually strongly biased: as everything in the world the DRM has pros and cons, but IMO its cons are nearly all on the customer's side while the pros on the seller's side may reveal illusory sooner than expected. As such I would cross the 6th box without thinking twice.

I suspect that most people that don't hang out on the forums would probably choose 2, since most folks use DRM protected products and it generally doesn't affect them; I personally have no interest in using the delivery mechanism that the encrypted content comes through, so I would probably answer 3.

I would choose 5 (it's going to have to offer something that nothing else does.)

An option regarding other delivery methods (ie DIM) would probably change my answer.

Yeah, I'm with 5. I'll pick up encrypted freebies and I MIGHT look long and hard at a product that's incredibly useful. At this point, though, I'm pretty committed to never buying something while it's encrypted.

  • I would choose 5, and Aiko7 will be one of them when released and I'm not gonna miss her due to a simple Data Restrictive Madness.

    5. [   ] ... reluctantly, only if the product is extremely appealing and isn't available in any other form
