    My last version of Poser was PoserPro 2012, and it will probably be the last. I must say, I don't find the user interface user friendly, and after so may upgrades, very little has been done to improve on it.

    Like the Animation and hierarchy panels that need to be opened each time one needs to make tweak. And they are big and always in the way.
    Poser could have learned by now what the trend is in the user interface - like Cinema 4D or Adobe's interconnected panels.

    Then, each time the hierarchy panel is opened (whether for object export or editing) it collapses every bloody element in the scene. Now if you have lots of objects and figures in a scene,it becomes quite a nightmare to scroll and scroll and scroll to find the relevant element, or close all the arrows to un-clutter the list. And worst is -- Poser does not remember one's last list breakdown.

    Or, am I not aware of the alternatives?

    To be fair to DAZ, it is around 2 years since Genesis 2 was launched, which is about par for the course in terms of new figure generation releases. There are some nice developments in the new one, including a more flexible system for generating expressions. But that doesn't mean that older figures are redundant (just for fun I just posted a new image that I did with V2 in my Rendo gallery!) and V4 onwards are still very popular and usable.

    A money making scheme? Not sure what you mean! You clan buy these textures for the little ' black dress ' for only 12.95 ! Daz has always been the best value for things in my opinion.

    Hmmmm... I have gotten textures for clothes, etc when they go on sale, but normally I make my own alternative textures. Either as maps or as a shader. Being an artist, I would have thought you'd do the same, and a much better job than I can do, Andy, as I have seen your art!. :wow:

    On the Ellie for V6 at left, I used the gold colour Medieval Peasant Clothing shirt for Genesis Male, gave it a soft buckskin texture which I made, and added hair and created a fur trim. Then mixed and matched other items, including the leggings, boots, props and changed their textures as well. The belt is from Dancar Clothes for M4. I used a lot of M4 clothing for my ladies. I need more modest clothes for my adventure characters than the porn-wear that are the norm for the female models. :smirk:

    The Lanying V6 figure on the right needs her fur trim done, just haven't gotten to it and was trying out a look. Her tunic has a leather texture and was from Valiant for M4. It's a very versatile item and I use it a lot. Valiant is on sale for $1.99 at the moment.

    It's fun deconstructing clothing, making textures...and so far I have not lost any morph ability on areas I still need to arrange. The" fit-to" utility usually works for most natural fitting effects, and I use the magnet to sort out any breast poke through, but my figures are rarely that well-endowed. :-P

    This is a first draft for a book cover and needs a lot more work and will have a different background, so lots still to do to get them to fit in the designated areas of the dust-jacket. The author wants another figure added, but that might not work at all.

    I think that is someone were to do an objective, feature by feature comparison of Carrara with what's available today, even in a free app like Blender, there is absolutely no question that Carrara is decades behind the times. Especially when you consider what it would take (ie, many years) to bring Carrara up to date.

    Off the top of my head, here are some major features:

    Flames

    Smoke

    Fluids

    Dynamic Paint (eg., waves)

    Node based compositor

    Unbiased rendering

    Physically accurate materials

    Animation/rigging tools (expressions, etc.)

    Modelling/scuplting tools

    Camera tracking

    Video editing

    And those are just off the top of my head. And for the most part, those features DO NOT EXIST in Carrara, while they not only exist, but are fully functional and, IMO, very well done in a free app like Blender. What Blender and other actively developed apps have are, by definition, state of the art.

    Now I'm sure there are those who will say "Oh, that's not an important feature FOR ME, so it doesn't count", or, "I've never heard of that feature, and I don't understand it, so it doesn't count". But that's not an objective analysis.

    The fact is, Carrara has almost NOTHING in terms of cool new, state of the art features that its marketing department can advertise to draw new customers.

    Yes, Carrara does have some benefits like I've already mentioned. But taken as a whole, in an objective analysis, it is decades behind the times. It is mind boggling to even consider what it would take to add these state-of-the-art features to Carrara.

    Especially considering that DAZ couldn't even implement a fully functional Bullet physics simulator, when all they had to do is make "hooks" into Carrara. Imagine making all of those other features from scratch.

    We're talking decades.

    Software apps need to be kept up to date in order to stay relevant, profitable. I agree this hasn't happen with Carrara. Lets take a look
    Carrara 8 was release 5 years ago in 2010. The 8.5 took almost forever to get developed and release and it was just for support of Genesis content and no new ground breaking features or updated of older features as you have mention.. Here we are 2 years later after 8.5 release and now Genesis 3 doesn't work. With the rumor Carrara 9 that was to happened 2 years ago continues to be a just that a rumor. But DAZ Studio development never stopped.
    So I do agree with you.

    Your book cover looks grande! Do you know of Chip Kidd. He has some great lectures on apple tv on the TED station. Really great designer (just ask him)

    I didn't take it as snarky... the PA's do really create some great stuff and prices do come down once released, so it's good to wait and see if they go on sale before buying. More often than not,the textures do IMHO. But having a good shape for a clothing piece gives us the opportunity to alter it to our own needs. I am very pleased that with full outfits you get the unshaded un-modelled version in the promo pics. That really determines what I decide to buy.

    Although I will be returning V7 and submitting a support ticket, I did want to get home and download it and try it out before doing so. I've been traveling for the last couple weeks so checking in from my laptop. I just did some cursory tests. Here are two screenshots, not necessarily the best or worst results. I loaded V7 in Studio, applied some hair, expression, clothing, and pose.

    - exported from studio in collada format and loaded in Carrara
    - exported from studio in obj format and loaded in Carrara

    The mesh did not follow the bones in the collada export. Not sure why. Some of the limbs shaders were problematic in the obj export. Maybe with more effort and tweaks, I could get slightly better results, but I'm not going to put in the effort. As I said, I'll be returning the products and submitting a support ticket, but wanted to share.

    still has skinny arms and can't find a way to adjust them yet :-(

    Are the arms that skinny in DS or just Carrara? Is it only when they are raised up as in your pose, or in any position? I think it might be connected with the different rigging that G3F has.

    Well I admit the only thing that has stopped me buying V7 is the not working in Carrara aspect and I can get her in animated and talking even via iClone as I have found with G3F but the fact is for the price of her pro bundle I can buy a lot of nice DAZ content that will work in DS, Carrara, Poser and iCone.
    That for me is the bottom line.
    I have played a lot with G3F these last few because she is free and that has been work enough :lol:
    I did buy the animation converter for using her in DS but not even bothered trying it yet, lipsync in there will also be a lot of work unless DAZ releases a mimic configuration, I exported a cr2 that I opened in Mimic pro, took one look at all those facial bones and closed it!!!
    In iClone 3dxchange 5 at least I could see in real time the visemes made moving them and that was a fair bit of work.
    I am finding the G2F & M much better in Carrara than I used to though but even they tend to be resource hogs, in studio even not just Carrara.
    A scene with 5 or more dressed in studio just as hard to render an animation where as I have chucked 26 dressed haired V3, M3, V4 & M4's in a Urban Sprawl 2 in DAZ studio and a whole lot more than that thanks to replicators in Carrara!!!
    I get the feeling she is more of an art render figure with detailed anatomy inc a butthole I hear than an animated video character, I cannot see myself ever rendering those details!!!

    Until then, poor Vicky 7 will look like that.

    That one was in iClone 6 AND Carrara using Octane render (the flashing BG) same figure (G3F with an autofitted dress) but no softcloth in Carrara.
    just another test but since I rendered it though might as well upload it, Darius was in iClone.

    Ok so it looks like the issue with Genesis3 and Carrara got worst for me when i just updated genesis3 essentials. the previous ver worked. however after a 32bit debug error I noticed that she loaded in carrara 32 bit. i have been playing around with my characters so can someone else confirm that she is loading in Carrar 32bit but crashes Carrar 64bit.

    I often don't understand why people want the very last innovation on the market, it is only of the powder to the eyes and useless (concept invented by the creator of Sony).
    All that I see as renders on Internet with the Genesis generation still doesn't arrive at quality we had with generation 4 (and 3).
    It is as the photographer who wants the very last camera on the marked and who doesn't have the artistic view to make a good photograph.
    I believe that with generation 4, one arrived at a very hight quality and it is not the Genesis system which will exceed it for the moment.
    The basic question is: Are you purchaser or creator ?

    While it is true that you can get great images with V4, there is no doubt that joints bend more naturally with later generations than V4. This latest generation has a lot more potential for facial expressions too. There have been improvements - sometimes subtle but improvements none the less - with each generation. I would not personally abandon previous generations, and I still use V4 a good deal. But things move on and it would be great to have support for it in Carrara, if only to have the choice and options to use it if you so desire.

    OK, I just tried loading in the 32 bit version as tugpsx suggested and it still crashes for me, although his results suggest it could be something fairly minor that is causing the issue.

    How did I miss that post?  Toldja I was having a rough time with life lately...

     

    Great image!  Looks like a new workout routine was all that was needed.  I failed to notice any issues with the arms in that render  wink

     

     

     

    EDIT - rhe quote thingy went crazy in that post.  Went to edit it, but in edit view it's all proper quotes, so ...  yeah.

    So while checking different versions i found that G3 loads in 8.5 215 64 bit without crashing also. The weird thing is the bones will move leaving the obj but if you adjust parameters for the char such as arm size and weight those morphs work.

    According to this, I loaded G3 into C8.0 and saved it as Carrara Object and reloaded in C 8.5.1 -> works :-)

    How did you load it into C8.0 as Genesis was only supported from 8.5?

    I don't know. It just worked. But some morphs will not be saved.
