The idea behind the search (and what we are going for) is if you have a specific enough search, it will display all matches in a plain manner (for instance, shiny sheetz).
If you have a more generic term, it will do what we call a facetted search. So, something like "tank". It could be a tank top, military vehicle, character named tank, storage tanks, or other things. Its all over the place. With the facetted search it does an initial break down of results based upon its category so you can quickly find the kind of item you're looking for in a carousel, sorted by relevance, and then if you want to see them all, there is the "Show All" button next to the carousel that will take you to that subset and display them in a paginated, sortable, and filterable result.
There is clearly some tweaking we can do to how it behaves to make it smarter. For instance, search term of "Hair" breaks it all into various sub-categories of "People and Wearables" so you can view Genesis 2 hairs easily, but it doesn't do a great job of breaking it out into things like actual Hair and hair shaders, plugins, etc.
So, its a work in progress, but that is the reason for the carousels.
Before I was finally able to access my account again because the page wouldn't load (and afterwards me having to dig for my password) I thought this was simply an emergency site because the servers had been hacked or crashed. I really can't appreciate the new design as off now. Supposedly there are going to be more changes to come in the following days. So far however, the site looks like it's been designed by a ten year old who's trying to make life easier for his hyperopic granddad. Everything looks confused and out of proportion, the forum's funny and a lot of pages won't load which is pretty annoying since I spent ages to search and bookmark help-threads. I'm not one of the people who rejects any sort of change, since some tweaking can bring benefits especially when it comes to search options, but this time I have to side with the people who simple can't see improvement.
Ok after seeing all the comments about mobile I pulled out my tablet and went to the site with firefox for mobile. It doesn't look bad in that context (the shop has 3 evenly spaced products per line). And in some cases the links in say the account button or the multi-lines button (for shop etc) could be bigger as it is now it is better to use a stylus than finger so you get what you are aiming for. I don't have time to log in and try the wishlist but I suspect it looks mostly the same, but perhaps a little more evenly spaced. I certainly wouldn't make the thumnail/initial product views in the shop any bigger. They are plenty big enough for a tablet.
Now with desktop version of Firefox...oh my word what a mess. Everything is HUGE and while each product in the shop is still spaced 3 per line, there is a LOT of white space between each. And the thumbnails are HUGE. The side scroller at the top takes up the whole page. I have to scroll down to see anything else other than the DAZ top banner and the side scroller.
As for speed, it is same on mobile vs desktop, which desktop should be much faster. But it is the same speed. You expect slow on mobile with a smaller connection, processor, etc. But with the desktop doing the same thing? Clearly this site was built with mobile and mind with desktop taking a back seat.
Someone mentioned "who views this site on mobile?" Well I have in the past for specific reasons, but I never purchased anything while on my tablet. I might have bookmarked something and checked it out later when I was on my desktop, but that was all. To make the site with mobile first is a little odd. As it mentioned we render and download to our desktops NOT mobile. Most of us use the desktop to browse the site and purchase (although I am sure Daz has accurate metrics on that). So I am a little a loss as to why the design is so lacking or desktop wasn't given priority.
All I can say is I am certain this will impact sales, and I hope Daz fixes it soon. I know I won't be shopping here as much if the site continues in its current form. The rubber banding alone when trying to vertical scroll is enough to drive me away. Other sites incorporated the same design methods and I left there as a result.
I just noticed when I was looking at my product library at the bottom it says "Please use a larger device to veiw/manage your products. Thank you. " :0 I also don't find the clothing templates (as others have mentioned). Several items I purchased had them, and they don't now. I checked in the store page for the product and nope not there either.
All very well in theory, but in actual practice I keep finding those facetted searches can also be "all over the place" — mainly because the categories themselves are still inconsistent.
As an example, I just tried a search on "Morphing Fantasy Dress" and got carousels for these categories:
Fantasy > Clothing and Accessories > People and Wearables (67)
Everyday > Clothing and Accessories > People and Wearables (14)
All (9)
Clothing and Accessories > People and Wearables (14)
Bundles > People and Wearables (19)
I have no idea what causes an item to appear in which carousel, or whether any items appear in more than one carousel. I can see the various base figures' actual dresses in at least two carousels, MFD texture sets are all over the place, and I can see some of the G2F bundles which don't have anything MFD-related in them at all.
This is just too much of a mess; what about doing the search logic the other way round, offering the "show all" first, with a clickable option button for the broken down carousel view if required? Because right now, even if I did like using the carousels (I very much don't) I can't tell until I try whether or not the carousel view will actually be any use.
Explain this one to me. I needed to locate an older product that I know I purchased but wasn't coming up in product library when I filtered it. In this case the product is Stormguards. I typed the name in as it is listed in the DAZ catalog. The search results stated there were no matches for Stormguards.
I then had to go to the vendor search and locate the vendor's page. Sure enough, on the vendor's page, there was the product just as I had listed in the item search.
Save for the fact that I need to compare the info on the product page and get a screenshot, I normally would have just rolled my eyes, said the heck with it and likely gone to another site to see if they had something similar to what I was looking for.
Hmm, when I type Stormguards in the search I get 2 hits, with the correct Stormguards product the first one.
I checked it for you and no, if you use NoScript on DAZ, the whole site will stop working. It simply won't load.
I normally use NoScript with Firefox and turning it off is an added hassle (I have to restart my browser each time). However, even after turning it off to see if I could get the site to load I still cannot access my wishlist or the store (it simply says "calculating" and never loads the list). I could not even log in until I came to the forums (I couldn't find any where to log in on the front page). So until DAZ get's its act together and learns to properly test their site before going live with it, I guess I won't be a DAZ customer. Frankly I wish they'd left the site as it was, it may not have had all the latest bells and whistles but it worked and I could find what I needed which beats a site that doesn't work for me at all by a long, long mile.
Yup, that is an example where we need to be smarter about it. The answer isn't "it isn't working well right now with some searches, turn it off" because it is working rather well with other searches (our analytics point to this with the majority of the search terms used on the store and interaction levels). The answer is "make it better so it will work with searches like that". We have some ideas and different things we are going to try out, so expect to see more changes and updates and more user conveniences rolling out (one of the first major ones being replacement of the forum software with something which isn't terrible).

It appears the store search is still working the way it was before the redesign - defaulting to "or" instead of "and". I'll bet your search for Morphing Fantasy Dress gave you results for "Morphing" plus results for "Fantasy" plus results for "Dress" (while what you wanted was results for "Morphing Fantasy Dress").
There is a workaround - search the store with Yahoo or Google instead of the store search.
I think you're right.
<headdesk>
Yes, I should have used a smiley, my bad . Though I did receive a note about keeping it secret before it goes live. I was kidding about the search, so far I cannot say it is better. That's the problem with the Web - to demonstrate irony, you need tons of smileys.
...and they don't have enough good ones here.
...but in the "old days" you got the results sorted by relevancy. So if I enter Steph6 I should first get the base Steph 6 figure, followed by the Steph 6 bundles, and then products directly related to that character/figure, not Vicky6, Steph 4, Aiko 5 , vehicles, or scene sets, and as static page with no scrolling banners that display eveything but Steph 6 content.
Having to perform a second manual search through all the scrolling banners is ludicrous. One might s well just search through the entire store by hand.
It's not bleedin' rocket surgery.
...and bring back the drop downs/sidebars.
Hmm, when I type Stormguards in the search I get 2 hits, with the correct Stormguards product the first one.
..try entering "Aiko 3".
..try entering "Aiko 3".
1) You need the quotes around it, otherwise you get anything with Aiko or 3.
2) Click the blue "Show All" button on the right above the carousels and it goes straight to a regular, non-carousel display.
3) Change the "Sort By" to "Relevance" if it's currently set to "New Arrivals"
It seems to me that this could all be solved with 3 simple tweaks:
1) have a search option to 'match all' or 'match any', even better if you could set your preference
2) have a preference to show or hide the carousels on searches
3) have "Sort By" default to "Relevance" on searches
I think you're right.
<headdesk>
at least you didn't search for Aiko 3. Do you have any idea how many products contain "3" in their writeups?
That would be a good start — but only if the search logic's version of "relevance" is actually... erm... relevant.
What I'd really like to see, though, is an option in "Sort By" for the same "by order of adding to Wishlist" that we had in the old store. It's unintuitive and downright ridiculous to add something to the Wishlist, then have to go digging to find it because it was released a couple of years ago.
Has anyone suggested a fully user-definable "move up/move down" sorting system yet?
Oh, this is new, just as I thought the theme setting had stabilised — has anyone else tonight gone through with a purchase, and had the theme switch from dark to light in the middle?
...@robkelk: I do, as I did a test search for Aiko 3.
@fixmypcmike: That is more steps than the last site required. Until you mentioned about using quotes, I (and most likely others) would never think of that as a condition to narrow the search. This was not required on the previous site. It is inconvenient to say the least and an indication of poor site design. I go on to ShareCG, with the default of "relevance," enter the keyword(s) in the search field, and I get results that are sorted correctly. Is it that difficult for Magento to perform?
When I did my Aiko 3 seach test the store site, there is no "relevance" filter in the ""sort by" options (I already mentioned this), only "New Arrivals", "Price" (High/Low), "Trending" (whatever that is supposed to mean), and "Most Popular".
What it comes down to is there really needs to be some sort of preference setting to optimise the format of the site based on the kind of system we are viewing it on. For "conventional" desktops and notebooks, it should also include the standard drop down menus and sidebars as they don't have touch screens.
That would be a good start — but only if the search logic's version of "relevance" is actually... erm... relevant.

It didn't happen just now when I made a purchase, but it did happen to me the first day of the rollout.
I had it happen tonight too. When I got to payment screen, it turned white. When the order was completed I went back to store and theme was white. I changed it back and it's held so far.
It actually happened yesterday too but I changed it back to dark right away before I checked out and it stayed dark the whole time after that.
I thought the previous store did the same thing with searches, defaulting to "match any" rather than "match all", but I could be mistaken.
(BTW, I boggled at the thought of ShareCG as an example of a good search engine, I've always found it to be barely usable.)
I would also prefer the search results in a grid rather than carousels, at least have an option that can be set in preferences if the default is carousels. I really hate the carousel results. See my post on page 30 of the Members Only thread if you want to know how much I hate the carousel search results.
...the more I read bout this, the more I feel they really jumped the gun, particularly dropping it on us during a major sale event.
Since, according to what I read in another comment, this is primarily "cosmetic" and not an actual change in site software (as we had in 2012), why couldn't they roll back to the previous version of the site and fix some of this stuff first (and listen to the additional suggestions and feedback by many here as well as on the other threads that were closed) before taking it live again? Seems just like I heard the last time, "it worked fine in the test" but when launched for real, it turned into a train wreck.
...and they should wait until we're between sales.
BTW I get more relevant results on Share CG using general category as a keyword than I have seen here.
Just snipping this part out real fast. Whomever said this doesn't know what they are talking about. There is pretty much only one person who posts on the forums who isn't on Daz's web team who has a pretty good idea of the scope of the changes from the parts he can see, and that is Cypherfox. I don't have the time to respond to try to correct every wrong assumption or misinformed post, it is safe to ignore pretty much anyone else's posts on any technical aspect of the website.
I've a crappy low-speed connection - I really want an account-level (not cookie or session-based) way to shut off the carousels. Including the "What's Hot". Give me a link to a grid-version of "What's Hot" and just a simple grid layout of search results. And, for that matter, I need a link I can click on in the grid even if the bloody icon hasn't loaded. I have to refresh the store five or six times to get the top four rows to fully populate, and I'm pretty tired of it.
bah.. I don't have time to read through 18 pages, sorry... the beta was a beautiful dark grey, now it's bright fricken ungodly white again... I thought we were going to get the option to choose but I can't find it.
Icon in the upper right corner > "Switch Theme"
thanky!

...straightforward question: Is it?
Since the launch on Wednesday, this has stirred up something of a "tempest in a teapot", spawning at least four other threads (all which were closed instead of being merged). Responses by "those in the know" that "this and that" will be looked into and fixed after issues were pointed out in these threads tend only to make it appear that the update was indeed not fully ready for final public release when it went live.
I'm having trouble in the gallery. I can't get to the edit page for any of my pictures. The edit pages are there but for some reason they don't load all the way. The loading circle overlay thing doesn't go away. Tried on both Firefox and Chrome.
As long as the shop continues to use 'DAZ maths' (E.g. 86% off a regular price of $ 14.95 after 'DAZ maths' are $ 2.23, not $ 2.09), I can't see a big advancement in the new system. There are a few new functions I appreciate, but on the whole the new layout is less clear than the old one. The pics are too big, some links are missing ('Fast Grab', for example), and the navigation is not as easy as the old site's (e.g. if you want to go to a certain forum, you always have to check the main forum site and can't go directly from the menu to, say, 'Commons'). And why did I get no newsletter today? Wasn't there any?
Has anyone had problems with the shopping cart lately? I just went to purchase the “titanic” bundle, and when I hit “submit order” got a strange error message. I didn't think to take a screenshot so can’t remember what it said, but the cart did NOT go through to the confirmed purchase page. Although the product is now showing that I have purchased it, and my “orders” show I have purchased it. Nor have I received the confirmation email which ALWAYS turns up straight away. So it seems I have purchased the product….but the error message was a bit strange.
