I picked it up for 1.99 as a PC+ item of the day back in October.
Perfect! Thanks for that. Don't know how I kept missing it in my searches. £1.99 would've been a nice price. Think I'll hold out on it for now and keep an eye on it.
Well, I dropped David 5 for just a minute to transfer another character I really like from Genesis to G3M and got sidetracked because....of course I had to morph him further. Then I had to change his skin and....
Got sidetracked today...this is what I was working on.
I brought Obi Lanky over to G3M with GenX2, and then I wanted to make him look more like a real person rather than just a caricature of a person, but I left him really thin. Of course then I had to redo the shaders, make newer SSS maps for Darius 7, etc etc...lol.
I really wish DAZ would bring their original older characters like David 5 up to Genesis 8. That would be fantastic. Poor David has been totally forgotten, even though they've continued Stephanie. Maybe someone could make some of those older characters for Genesis 8. I have Michael 7 for Michael 8. I also have Gianni 6 for Gianni 7. It would be great if they could bring David 5 up to Genesis 8 in a similar way, even though there's no David 8 (and probably never will be, sadly).

I did get my customized David over to G3M at least with GenX2, but he looks a bit different. I'm customizing him further and am starting to get something I can live with ;). He doesn't look like the Genesis 1 David 5 that I customized, but at least he looks like his brother. LOL He's wearing Malachai for G3M's skin and borrowing M7's HD details morph here. I still have to set the skin up to chromatic tho. No special lights either...just the default HDRI.
Getting old figures over can be done, they just aren't gonna look exactly the same, but only like a close relative :( However, I would definitely buy a "David 5 for Genesis 8 Male" if he looked as good as some of the ones Gravity Studios has been doing. And I mean I'd want him to look the same right down to the tips of his toes ;)

I believe the reason he doesn't look exactly the same is because of the lower poly count of the G3/8 models. But it's good you're finding ways to adjust.

It seems to me that Daz decided that the David name had bad mojo (since David 5 flopped according to them). They could've named Landon or Owen "David." I love David 5, but I don't think the promos showed him in his best light, what with those high forehead hairstyles. Raiya threw down on David's co-characters: Sean, Dean, and Neo were all excellent skins, which I'm hoping Laurie's process will help me make look good in Iray. And while I'm Photoshopping, I'll finally fix Sean's reddened nostril holes.

Well, I have three choices. Use David 5 (which I will), use the G3M version (which I will, probably) and have Mike 7 as a brother between the two (would probably work). LOL I have not yet begun to customize!! I find it extremely fun and rewarding making something no one else has ;). Probably why I can't leave a character alone "as is" LOL.
You are so right about the lower poly too....I'm finding it hard to just add small details to the G3/G8 figures. In a weird way, they are very "doughy" and smooth, which looks so totally wrong to me. I find myself adding another characters HD details just to give the skin SOME tiny details, but that creates its own issues. There's a lot to like about the newer figures, but they do NOT lend themselves well to small details unless you add HD (which since I'm not a PA I can't obviously and can only borrow another characters) or make normals (there again, I'm borrowing from another character).
This is the difference between my David Genesis 1 on the left and David Genesis 3 after GenX2 on the right. Bear in mind that some of it is the different skins they're using, and perhaps the one I used on G3M wasn't a good choice (not crazy about the particular vendor because I find their skins "bland", but I can think of uses for that). The G3M version looks like my custom David 5's evil cousin...LMAO. The original looks sooo much better. On the G3 version, I had to add the chin cleft back in, even tho I checked that in GenX2 when I exported it. The nose is different and so are the eyes. The ears aren't even in the same ballpark.
You listening Gravity Studios? We want a David 5 for G8M. LOL :P
FWIW, I'm having similar issues with Mike 6, who looks even worse than this converted over.
after bringing aiko3 over into ,duf how maks a template so she can autofit clothes from v4?
If you have copied over the Aiko 3 shape you can use that to create an A3 clone, to load clothing from A3, but not V4. For V4 you need to copy over the V4 shape via GenX and then create a clone from that. Alternatively there are a lot of products available to give you a V4 clone in G3F or G8F, and Genesis 1 has a V4 clone built in.

David 5 on G3M via GenX doesn't look that bad to me, when using his own textures ... though he does look a bit more "related to David 5" than "another edition of David 5", if you see what I mean.
In the image below, David 5 Genesis is the bald guy, David 5 G3M is the one with hair. The difference in how their textures look is due to the G3M version actually being kind of set up for Iray with Edward's shader (and some underlying textures, because I was not in the mood to make SSS maps, even though I've done that before), while David himself is just an autoconversion on render. Even though I have Cayman Studio's Legacy UV product, I sent him through Map Transfer and Texture Transformer, just because. Came through pretty well, really.
I've got both the Genesis Legacies for Genesis 2 and David 5 and GenX, and somehow at some point, I thought it was a good idea to shift those to G3 as well. For some reason, David's body looks better with the Legacies, but his head looks a bit better with the actual Genesis morph. (Seriously, the G2M chest ...)
His head morph is dialed in at 1.25 instead of 1.0. One thing I noticed sometimes happened with GenX is that heads sometimes lost definition, so the head needed to be overdialed a bit. Go much higher than 1.25, and the teeth and eyes break through the head. Suppose it would be good for a horror render, though.
I've been tinkering with Nevio M6 as well. It's been ... an adventure, let's say. Mostly on the texture side; I have his Legacies shape as well, and I've just been using that.
Haven't figured out how to split the head and body with GenX yet...will have to try that ;)
Laurie
GenX will not split a head and body morph unless they were already split. However if they were you just need to select the head morph under Actor/Head and this will bring over the head only. There is a product call X-Morphs that can be used to split head and body morphs where they are not currently separate.

but, how to save as a clone?
ty
Firstly bring up the "Parameter Settings" of the morph and change the Type from Modifier/Shape to Modifier/Clone.
Then File->Save As->Support Asset/Morph Asset (not clone asset)
In the popup box locate the morph you changed to be a clone, select it, and then this will be saved for the relevant Genesis base figure

Laurie
You have to use "Selected Morphs (with properties)" and not "single morph". When you do that, you then load Genesis from Source. After that, you should then search for the word "David". Then you can check the main David 5 morph in the left column checkbox, then you can continue the search for the word David and check all five of his head shapes and bring them over as separate sliders. (I think there are five; may be just four. I'm not at that computer at the moment.)
The main morph dial still dials in his head and body -- and the main dial has them combined as one shape, so it's not possible to dial in his body without his head. [His head slider doesn't move when you do that; the main morph isn't a CTRL dial, but a complete shape all by itself.] But once you've got that shape set, you can dial in his default head to an extra percentage, or add in the other shapes as desired. (They are meant to be additive, it looks like, from my tinkering. And I suppose they'd have to be, since the main dial is an intact complete shape.)
Oh, and I had to use the Chin Cleft HD slider for his chin, as well. Neither GenX from Genesis nor GenX from the G2M Legacies shape brought over that feature.

They are similar, but not exact. While one could apply a morph meant for Aiko 3 to Hiro 3, that same morph could not be applied to Michael 3. Now, I'm not sure if that's because the body part "grouping" was duifferent for some figures, say a few extra polygons for M3's neck (grabbing them from the "chest") as compared to V3, or if some meshes actually had different number of polygons. (I'm at work, so I can't verify one way or the other.)
I would love to get it working but I'm confuzzled right from the start pretty much. I need to find some in-depth tutorials or something. I can't imagine saving a Genesis character that's never going to be used in Poser as a .cr2 can't still apply with GenX2.
Laurie
Its a lot easier when the source and destination are both Genesis figures. You select Genesis as the source, G3M as the destination, then select the morphs you want to move over. No CR2s needed!
Is is really that easy? I have GenX2 but was worried I wouldn't be able to find the files, it things went poorly; and still being a newb, I have no idea how to delete sliders. I am just finishing recataloging my database after my pc went wonky at Christmas. The thought of messing with my currently orderly file state was enough to forestall playing with Genx2. That and my free time to "play" with DS is sparse.
I am currently interested in attempting the 3DU and JQ in G1. Havos, have your tried with any of Philosopher's Eggs M4 creatures? I work with elementary students and would love to convert some of those to G3. Thanks for any tips and instructions you are willing to share.

I have not tried those morphs, but I have moved other creature morphs from M4/V4 and K4 before without issues, including some relatively extreme morphs (for example I moved this morph https://www.daz3d.com/shamus-o-shaughnessy-for-k4). You might want to move them to G1 rather than G3, since G1 can use the M4, V4 and K4 textures used by the Philosopher egg creatures. There are products to use M4 and V4 texures on G3, but not K4. To use a K4 skin on G3 you should use Map Transfer first to convert the skin to M4 or V4.
Like anything, GenX has it complications, I am not saying it is trivial to use, but there are more complicated things in Daz Studio. Once you have worked out how to transfer 1 shape, the rest is very easy.
i know they share the same uvs, but are they the same mesh?
It depends on how you define "the same mesh". The meshes for Gen 3 all have the same number of vertices and polygons, but the initial positions of each vertex is not the same, since that is what gives V3, M3, A3 etc their initial shapes. Naturally all gen3 meshes can be morphed into each others shape.

Thank you for the tip to transfer to G1. Do you happen to know the product name(s) for using M4/V4. on G3? While I have K4, I wasn't really concerned about using the K4 morphs, because I was planning to experiment with Zevo's Growing Up products that i own. Thanks again for your time!

TY!!
All the Millendium 3s the same mesh?
i know they share the same uvs, but are they the same mesh?
They are similar, but not exact. While one could apply a morph meant for Aiko 3 to Hiro 3, that same morph could not be applied to Michael 3. Now, I'm not sure if that's because the body part "grouping" was duifferent for some figures, say a few extra polygons for M3's neck (grabbing them from the "chest") as compared to V3, or if some meshes actually had different number of polygons. (I'm at work, so I can't verify one way or the other.)
Sincerely,
Bill
Wow! I have so much to learn. Are you doing that via the sliders/dials?
