They are similar, but not exact.  While one could apply a morph meant for Aiko 3 to Hiro 3, that same morph could not be applied to Michael 3.  Now, I'm not sure if that's because the body part "grouping" was duifferent for some figures, say a few extra polygons for M3's neck (grabbing them from the "chest") as compared to V3, or if some meshes actually had different number of polygons.  (I'm at work, so I can't verify one way or the other.)

They were based on the same mesh, it's indeed the grouping which is different for M3.

I would love to get it working but I'm confuzzled right from the start pretty much. I need to find some in-depth tutorials or something. I can't imagine saving a Genesis character that's never going to be used in Poser as a .cr2 can't still apply with GenX2.

Its a lot easier when the source and destination are both Genesis figures. You select Genesis as the source, G3M as the destination, then select the morphs you want to move over. No CR2s needed!

Is is really that easy?  I have GenX2 but was worried I wouldn't be able to find the files, it things went poorly; and still being a newb, I have no idea how to delete sliders.  I am just finishing recataloging my database after my pc went wonky at Christmas.  The thought of messing with my currently orderly file state was enough to forestall playing with Genx2.  That and my free time to "play" with DS is sparse.

I am currently interested in attempting the 3DU and JQ in G1.  Havos, have your tried with any of Philosopher's Eggs M4 creatures?  I work with elementary students and would love to convert some of those to G3.  Thanks for any tips and instructions you are willing to share.

I have not tried those morphs, but I have moved other creature morphs from M4/V4 and K4 before without issues, including some relatively extreme morphs (for example I moved this morph https://www.daz3d.com/shamus-o-shaughnessy-for-k4). You might want to move them to G1 rather than G3, since G1 can use the M4, V4 and K4 textures used by the Philosopher egg creatures. There are products to use M4 and V4 texures on G3, but not K4. To use a K4 skin on G3 you should use Map Transfer first to convert the skin to M4 or V4.

Like anything, GenX has it complications, I am not saying it is trivial to use, but there are more complicated things in Daz Studio. Once you have worked out how to transfer 1 shape, the rest is very easy.

Thank you for the tip to transfer to G1.  Do you happen to know the product name(s) for using M4/V4. on G3?  While I have K4, I wasn't really concerned about using the K4 morphs, because I was planning to experiment with Zevo's Growing Up products that i own.  Thanks again for your time!

If you mean M4/V4 skins on G3 then this is what you need: https://www.daz3d.com/legacy-uvs-for-genesis-3-michael-4 ; for M4

For V4 the product is at renderosity, by the same PA (Caymen Studios)

A lot of the creatures at Philosophers Egg are K4, and will have textures that are rather important for the overall look of the creature (fur for animals etc). These you are better off using on G1

Thanks.  Philosopher's has each creature with a M4, V4, and K4 version - you can buy them separate or as a bundle;  I really don't need animals with breasts, and was intending to try the M4 animals and then use growing up for a child like version.  I have all 3 of the GU products.  (Although some of the extra colors are on the female version.)

Wow, just took a look at it on Deviant Art.  You've done an incredible job! The skin textures, pose and lighting are all fantastic. Really impressed!!

I've had GenX for ages now but can't figure it out lol. Need to get it working to bring M6 and D5 to at least G3. One of these days.

I think there are a few threads around the site that explain it in more detail by folks more technically inclined than I am....lol. If I have time I'll have a look and see what I can find out ;). I really would like to use it, even if I am mostly happy with how each generation performs on its own. Hehe. Would be nice tho to try and duplicate my favorite older figures on a newer rig with newer skins.

    Oh, and thanks :)

    Laurie

I might try and have another go with GenX tomorrow. Did you say you had G8 clones for David 5 and G2? Can I ask where you got them? Can't find any in the store here.

I actually do not have Gen 8 clones for Genesis, but I just convert the clothes and hair to G3 first and it's an easy process from there because I have Genesis 3 clones (and Genesis 2 clones as well). Hair is drop dead simple. All you have to do is designate it as Genesis 3 hair and Bob's your uncle ;). Clothes are a bit more work, but not much and if you have Riversoft Art's converter it's REAL easy ;). So, I don't even think Genesis 8 clones are even really necessary at this point. So far David has been able to wear more stuff than any other figure I've got (and it looks better). Go figure.

I only have Genesis 3 clones for Genesis 2 as well.

    Laurie

@AllenArt what product is the Genesis 2 and 3 clones?  I am searching to see if I have them installed or even have them at all but not sure what I am looking for

@AllenArt I've rendered scene with my updated Michael 6, but I've used the same pose that you used for your David update. It's a great pose.

But just wanted to check with you if you would mind me posting it up?

Of course not! LOL After all, someone else made the pose I used too :P LOL

Post away! I'd love to see it :)

Are you going to share your materials settings?

Because dang, this would be useful.

I will, tho they are derived from Edward's shader so I can only give you the settings that are different (I did change most of them). I want to get another freebie out first (I still want to make one more pin type and texture the pin cushion), but I also have to redo the maps I changed for David. My idiot kitty walked across my keyboard, probably while I was asleep (she does that a lot) and deleted the entire David textures folder. I tried to retrieve them with software, but it was a no-go :/. It'll be about two weeks or so...longer than I wanted it to be, but I will get those out to you :).

Been tinkering with David 5 to see if he could get pulled over to the next generations, and how he'd look. It's been ... interesting.

His head goes off, not surprisingly, but then it stays more or less consistently off in the same ways. The cleft chin goes, the features are a bit softer and a bit broader. They do all look more or less related to David, if not identical to him.

What surprised me is how much, and how variably, his body goes off. I'm really not sure why it does this, but his shoulders and chest just do not come through accurately at all. Maybe it's because of the lower poly count for later generations, or the difference in how they're put together, or something. The G2M Legacies version needed his chest and shoulders tweaked, and he still doesn't have that inverted coat-hanger shoulder shape that the original does. The G3M and G8M shapes both somehow wind up more slender than the original. They don't look bad, just very different than you might expect. (I'm not actually sure what sliders to use to bring back the shoulder shape of the original.)

Genesis, G2M and G3M versions of David use the Anagenessis shader; G8M uses Altern8. Image should open into a new window.

Thanks for posting. Altern8 looks great. So, the twisty tricep is a Genesis 8 innovation.

  • AllenArtAllenArt Posts: 7,175

    Wow, that's a huge difference.

I'm still here folks, just having some RL problems with an older pet (same one that deleted the files I was working on actually). As soon as I'm able, I'll get back to David :).

I've noticed the latissimus dorsi on Genesis 3 and 8 do not extend realistically (of course, when they do---as with Genesis & Genesis 2---it causes other issues), but your render shows it clearly.

Depending on the relative muscularity of the character and what morphs you have, the lats are fixable. There's nothing you can do about the bicep/tricep area except hope that they fix whatever that issue is for Genesis 9.

I think I'll probably just continue to use him in his original form ;) As long as bending isn't too extreme he looks perfectly fine.

@AllenArt is there any possibility of posting a mini step by step tutorial of how you updated the Genesis skins to iray?  I have no idea what I am doing, even just to save out the shader presets  you mentioned back in the beginning, I tried to save out the shader for Edward 8 lips and when I applied to David 5 they were green ??  I have no idea why

Not a human, but I just got Noggins Chicken and iRayed it... I played with surfaces to try to make them look a little different but would have to go into Photoshop to make a real difference. The wings don’t move, making posing very limited though...

May we post our conversions here too (if you're not comfortable with that, I understand completely if you want to keep it with mainly just your work and efforts)? I'm debating whether to start a thread in the art forum with my 3DL to Iray conversions but don't know if I should start my own thread or contribute to an already established thread. I don't want to highjack your thread, so I thought I'd ask you what you'd prefer. :) I'm more than happy to start a new thread if you're mainly wanting to keep this thread for your work. :)
