I rendered the faces of Josie 8, FW Willa, Paisley, and VYK Dolly side-by-side last night. There were some white spots, so I set the Max Sample ridiculously high and let it render all night while I slept. I got even more white spots! They turned out to be transparent pixels! I fixed it in photoshop. The original image was 4K pixels wide, so I cut and cropped each face to 800px for this post. These are out-of-the-box, without any hair.

I think the Dolly human skin will work very well with Growing Up for G8F, as well as Dolly's eyelashes. Paisley looks the most realistic to me, but that could be the material settings more than just the skin mats. I will have to do more experimenting.

  • Could anyone confirm that if you've already bought the earlier Josies (either the Pro Bundle or just the base figure) you should get an orange banner deal with a discount depending on how many G3 bundles you've bought? I have all the Josies (I think) plus a good few G3 bundles, and I got the orange banner when V8 and O8 came out. Nothing yet for TJ8, only yet another message (which never generated a banner) about existing stuff being transferred to PC+.

  • There was a banner. Did get 20% for owning TJ7 and TJ6 pro bundles.

I never got the banner, but there was a message for the offer in my exclusive offers section of my account

  • Here is a quick partial render of Josie with a liitle Unforgettable faces for G8 and Jocelyn hair made longer by changing limits inparameters. The hair renders with white spots (I just tried the shiniest setting and did NOT use the render settings that came with the hair...) Also you can remove the sleeves fromthe goth top which is cool.

I like her skin and long eyelashes, the default G8 ones are too short! I tried to make her a bit older here too. Getting a G8 character in her early 20's to look good seems much harder than previous generations...

Really cute, glad you joined those of us using G8, looking forward to your take on things

didnt read all the posts but in the promos she does not look like a teen at all

...part of it for me are the pouty lips. Why is this such a dominant feature of Daz females, particularly teens? I see very few teens or even mature women with such puffy lips. With the makeup and lashes, it makes Josie look more like a "Hollywood starlet" than the average teen girl one would see in real life.

    Because Thorne does them.

...in promos I find it a turnoff as it makes females all look like clones of Angelina Jolie when she was younger.

Julie5 didn't look as bad as Josie8 does and she was a Thorne creation.

Thankfully there are theThin Lips and Mouth Width morphs with the general head morphs which see a fair amount of use from me.

Ditto. You don't always get a good result though when trying to "normalize" extreme morphs. Generally it's easier to turn something normal into something extreme than the opposite. A solution might be to create individual morphs dials for eyes, nose, lips etc. for a character, instead of just one head morph, so you could morph e.g. just the lips back to default G3 or whatever figure you use, while keeping the rest of the head morphs, instead of the current all or nothing option.

...ahh I was referring to the various Genesis Head Morph sets not just general character head shapes.  They have individual morphs like you mention.

    https://www.daz3d.com/genesis-3-female-head-morphs

AS I mentioned, I also have a number of head Morph Merchant resoruce kits as well.

I know, but it's not always easy to get a good result by modifying an extreme morph like pouting, if it's custom made which they usually are now. Would be better if the artist made individual lip, nose and eye etc. morphs where zero was the default figure morph, instead of just a "head" morph.

I'm not sure though if the morph is based on a merchant resource and you happen to have that installed. Can you then zero e.g. a lip morph back to figure default? I guess you could if the morph package was required but what if it isn't? The head morph must then be a separate morph independent of the resource package but maybe you still can adjust/zero the individual morphs if you have the resource installed?

On the other hand, many head morphs can be made without modification to the base model's mouth and lips, which could end up looking out of place.

If you mean their position, size etc. there are morphs that can correct that, at least in the packages I have.

The merchant resoruce head morphs are also from Handspun (Thorne) and include a thin lips morph.

Plus they include a lot of Thorne style lips which can be dialed back.

    ...

I think whats throwing people off is the lines when she makes expressions which is why some of you are preferring some of the thread renders with a bit more neutral expressions.

But, like, y'all do know when the youths make expressions we get lines too, right? (whilst I am not a teen, as one of the forums resident young people, I feel I get to use a we here)

I don't associate no lines when making facial expressions with youth, I associate it with botox

    For more of a review

I'd say she's as close to a teen as any of the various DazO teens have been, which is to say, still pretty stylized. IMO she's less stylized than Josie 7 was (her lips are perhaps a hair bigger, but her eyes are smaller, and her waist is less narrow)

Has anyone commented her makeupless look is pretty lipstick-y? 'Cause it seems it to me and that's pretty annoying, more annoying to me than the unremovable brows in terms of texture utility

The store page for the base figure does actually state she likes her lip gloss... cheeky

In the render I linked there are sharp creases and a bit of crepe-looking skin around her mouth, and no wrinkles at all anywhere near the eyes. Yeah, I associate that with botox. And I associate botox with older people.

I think she makes a great Belle, or Disney princess of your choice. I don't have Beast yet, but I imagine her here seeing him for the first time, dressed in all his finery.

    thats ok

but look at the promos https://www.daz3d.com/teen-josie-8

    thats not a teen

the shape is small but look at the face

    much to mature

  • She looks like a teen to me. Some teens I've seen look even older

  • AllenArtAllenArt Posts: 7,175

I think she looks more like a caricature of a teen....too stylized to be realistic. If what you're going for is a realistic teen, I would think more of going for individual morphs and rolling your own or using Josie only in very small amounts.

Still well worth it to get a petite (or at least more petite) figure into this generations gene pool.

Kind of like Alice 4. Liked the shape, never cared for the face.

ETA: Somehow, Josie8 puts me in mind of some of the graphics from the '20s. Big eyes, bee-stung lips, needs a cloche hat and spit curls. Boop boop a doop!

So I finally had a chance to sit down and actually render some tests with TJ8...  I wasn't really happy with the default settings, but here she is at 43.6% with Zev's YouthMorph dialed in at 9.4 to keep her in the right age range.  This I rather like.

I'm hoping for Stephanie 8 to get a more realistic teenager size into DS ;) I'm hoping against hope that she's a more realistc size like 5'4" or 5'5"....not like the towering Vicky 8 with the legs that go on forever. LOL. Mind you, I like Vicky 8 and all, but those gams are awful long :P
