To those saying she looks too old to be a teenager, just Google "High School Yearbook Photos". The VAST majority of them look around the same age or even older looking than Josie 8.
I'll just leave this here.
Also ALL teenagers:
I don't think any of those people look the age of the promo I linked.
Um, that one is a dead ringer for a girl named Tina that I went to school with back in the 1980's; we were about 14 at the time.
lol OK, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. I think some of them look even older.
Fantastic for both Tina and your impeccable two-decade-long photographic memory.
Hope she turned those lashes to good benefit.
It's either something about what the expressions do near her mouth or the shadows those giant lashes are casting near her eyes that is throwing me. Her morph looks young in all the promos but a couple of her main ones to me.
She looks very cute there. Is that the base Josie 8 or one of the add on characters?
Yes, that's the base Josie 8 out of the box, default HDRI. I dont know why but she's really different from the main promos
One last Josie 8 render. Same pose and stuff as the previous render, but this time she's standing on the Enterprise bridge. This is a bit of a lighting test too see how she renders under these lights.

I think many 3d female figures have fairly stylized baby faces with oversized eyes on mature looking adult bodies and almost elf features. Gauging age of these characters is pretty difficult and so when a figure is released that is specifically ended to be juvenile sometimes there is cognitive dissonance can occur.
The pics of the high schoolers is useful to illustrate to some extent how unrealistic Josie really is especially in her facial proportions.
I think she looks like a teen to me.
...I tend not to even bother with "senior class" photos as those were all postworked with airbrush (back in the day) or with Photoshop (today).
The pics I preferred are the candid ones along with those for activity groups (taken at the school by yearbook staff instead of professional photographers or in a fancy private photography studio).
Granted, when I was in HS, styles were much different than today. Many schools back then (mine included) were pretty strict about the length of skirts as well as the fit and cut of slacks and tops/blouses, oh, and no makeup (the excpetions to the latter were for dances, formal activities, and the spring prom).
As someone that used to make six figures photographing high school seniors for a living, I don't think she looks old but definitely not as real as the other G8 girls. Her head is a bit too large her mouth is to short horizontally for the width of it vertically and her eyes are very large and far apart - My own daughter has these features, very fat lips and large wide spaced eyes, but her mouth is still longer then it is tall. So yea, I find TJ8 to be styilized and less real but I still like her.
Any way I did a senior photo of TJ8 - in one of my best selling poses, straight out of Daz, just a crop and darkened the edges of the background a bit - the DOF and lighting in the eyes, all daz.
and for comparison a real 18 year old with big lips and big eyes - sorry this was the only photo I have and it was just after work - she works construction.
@caravelle, Josie 8 has a hidden Eyelashes morph. I don't understand why it is hidden. Perhaps unintentionally? Anyway, search for Josie in the Hidden morphs section of the Parameters. If you dial it all the way to "0" (without any other morphs active,) you get the default eyelashes size and shape. Josie's eyelashes trans map is still longer and fuller than the default lashes, though. If you want, replace the trans map with lashes from another figure, (G8 or G3)
ETA: I just looked it up and the name of the morph is PHMTeenJosie8Lashes.
I finally did take the plunge but only because I got TJ7 Pro Pack in on the deal, and well with a deal like that it would be silly to pass up on a chance like that..
Well, this is the first G8 character I'm going to get. It's the first one I find attractive although I do have the Thorne/Handspan morphs for G8 and the growing up morphs so this could be redundant, but I'm willing to give her a try. I already have so many similar looking characters but if I ever start working with G8, I think this character can cutify her subtly, because so far I'm not thrilled with G8's looks. Also, I like the bundle and PA characters for Josie too. Looks like I'm getting on the G8 bandwagon but just sliiiiightly... I still prefer G3 and even V4!
That's the reason I got her too, I didn't have any of the other packs.
She looks like a teen to me, although I agree with an earlier poster that one of the promo images does make her look a bit older/hardened, while the other images appear as you would expect.
That's quite a deal they have going, with Josie 5-7 free with her purchase. If I had an interest in rendering scenes with teens I would consider buying her. More likely to use toon kids, but haven't bought any of them yet either.
Josie 8's promo pics are pretty bad, If it wasn't for the previous versions for free offer, I probably would have passed on her. I'm glad that I didn't though.
could it be the new dual lobe function? like, we may have to readjust our lighting setups to compensate for the dual lobe settings? I too, have noticed a difference in skins on the G8 line, even tho - as everyone says - they are the same skins.
Yeah G8 material setups can be exactly the same but in practicality PAs are developing new ones with the updated functionality. V7's shader settings are not the same as V8's, etcetera.
....already have the base figures for Josie 6 & 7 so no incentive there for me. I tend to avoid the bundles and I usually just buy the clothing/hair I like and poses. The character morphs included in most starter and pro bundles really don't appeal to me as I can create different characters on my own with all the resources I have at my disposal.
Just don't need to get caught up in a new money sink that is G8, particularly as I am now on an extremely limited income and have already invested a lot in G3 (as well as saving up to upgrade my system). Oh I'm sure I could get TJ8 to look the way I'd like her to, but it would take more than I could afford at this juncture to purchase the base G8 morphs, Growing Up morphs, and other morph/shaping resource kits I'd need (which I already have for G3).
Here's another one. I forgot to mention that I made her head a bit smaller in my last render and in this one also. I made the mouth a tad wider in this one too and like it better. Her face style reminds me a little of some of my v4.2 girls. As I said I don't dislike her, I actually like her a lot but wouldn't use her if I was wanting something that looked photorealistic without a bit of tweaking.
Just picked up the Josie 8 probundle, the price made it hard to turn down and I liked most of what was in it. A couple of renders of josie with some modifications to the chin and nose, trying to make her look a bit more youthful. I also used v4 Amelie for the textures, converted using Caymens Legacy UV
You are correct about the mouth, I don't have a problem with the puffy lips, it's the horizontal width that is the problem. its looks all pinchy, I guess that comes from the constant pouting teens do. I like her, she does add a cute mix for V8 even if you don't use her as a straight out the box teen
I hate it when Daz Studio self corrects. The only place I could find a morph for Josie's eyelashes was in the Hidden section of the Parameters. I then worked on something else, closed DS, and reopened to do a side by side comparison of the faces on Josie 8, Willa, Paisley, and Dolly. Now I cannot find that morph in the Hidden section, but it is available, out in the open, in the Shaping tab... I can't even find the morph named PHMTeenJosie8Lashes, under Parameters or Shaping! Argh!
But... it is visible in the Shaping tab, right where it belongs, along with morphs for her ears. So for those of you who are put off by the impossible length of J8's lashes, there is a cure!
...a little OT
Even though the new character AnnA is toon based, in one of the promo pics she seems to have the potential for making a pretty decent looking teen character.
Here is a quick partial render of Josie with a liitle Unforgettable faces for G8 and Jocelyn hair made longer by changing limits inparameters. The hair renders with white spots (I just tried the shiniest setting and did NOT use the render settings that came with the hair...) Also you can remove the sleeves fromthe goth top which is cool.
I like her skin and long eyelashes, the default G8 ones are too short! I tried to make her a bit older here too. Getting a G8 character in her early 20's to look good seems much harder than previous generations...
THE 3 IMAGES AT THE TOP OH THE HORROR :P now I'm scarred for life thanks :P
