Morning.  Gloomy grey overcast topping city towers with an overwhelming sense of bleakness a while after dawn, 4 m waves off our beaches don' look so good either :)

Morning. Ear-tingling cold wind kinda incongrous with a big bright blue sky that seems to go forever or at least toward some hidden morning sun :)

...no bright blue sky here. More orange to light brown. Even at noon sunlight on the ground had an orange tint more charactweistic of early evening before sunset. The smoke from the latest wildfire (caused by a total imbecile who set off fireworks in an area under a red flag fire alert) makes it seem like a one of those days with a thick layer of high clouds. While it has saved us from a 100+ high today (only the low 90s) it also doesn't let the heat dissipate at night so it doesn't cool down as much. At least the smoke is staying aloft thanks to light winds and not coming all the way down to the valley floor which would make conditions unbearable. One more day of this and finally conditions should improve

Hoping for the best for our fire season coming up, preparing for the worst 'cos haz all happened before. Having a bit of weather here today,  gusting wind from the southern ocean and a few spots of rain and lumps of hail making it to the ground as well :0

...had a "post apoclayptic sunset" followed by an orange moon.  WIll try to upload the images from my phone in the morning to post if I can remember how..

Doesn't look too good for us this next few months, all our green bits haz made red zones :0

I'm devastated. My Cocker Spaniel was just diagonsed with lymphoma and I can't really afford it. Without treatment she only has about a month to live and with treatment maybe 12 to 18 months. There really isn't any choice and I'll have to get the treatment for her. But I'll be in debt and won't be able to afford anything else. Needless to say I won't be able to purchase anything from the sales that is more than the $30 store credit I already have left.

And now once again we on the NC Outer Banks are in the possible path of Hurricane Irma. If I get any damage I may not be able to afford repairs. But the life of my animal friend is worth so much more than physical things.

So sorry to hear this.  But, will she have quality of life during the treatments?  I've heard so many people complain about chemo and radiation therapies.  Some quit therapy.  Some refuse it in the first place.  I can't say for myself.  Some new cancer treatments coming down the line are promising.  I hope you have some happy times with your dog before she's gone.

Happily, yes. The side effects of the canine treatment for lymphoma are very minimal and not nearly as severe they are in humans. We have already had five happy years and I try to keep it up. But she senses that I am very sad, although she may not understand why.

....the content will always be here and there will always be more sales. The life andcompany of a faithful companion is more important.

As to Irma, it is now a Cat 5 storm with 175+ MPH sustained winds. So far still aimed towards Florida but even in these days of satellite tracking and computer aided projections, these storms can have a mind of their own. Be safe and if the word to evacuate is given, heed it because this is a very strong storm and with so much warm water to fuel it we could see similaar situation to Harvey..

...third "orange sun" day.  Yesterday the ash began falling here in Portland making it look like a moderately foggy day.  The one good news the heat wave has broken (only supposed to get into the 80s today) but hte bad news the smoke will stick around u tthrough Friday..  We currently have 37 wildfires in the region from Southerm British Columbia to Southern Oregon.  The Fort Stevens fire has "jumped" the Columbia River and now threatens  communitiesd on the Washington side.  I have one freind just outside of Washougal (a bit east up teh gorge) who is under a 24 hour evacuation warning. The difficult part is he has a farm and about two dozen animals to deal with.

Here is just the state map showing 21 of the fires just here alone.

Here is a satellite image of the smoke coverage. The total range of fires and smoke is so bad they're even feeling the effects as far south as San Francisco.

A shot of the fire from across the Columbia in Stevenson WA from Tuedsay.  INterstate 84 was closed from Troutdale  (an eastern suburb of Portland) eastward.

Portland early this morning from a news helicopter looking east from Downtown.

  • I want to eat more cheese but I only bought two cheese sticks today.   I probably should go to Food lion when I get cash to get a big bag of cheese sticks which might be cheaper in the long run.

This weekend the fire was a few thousand acres.  Yesterday it was 10,000 acres.  Today it's 30,000 acres.  Tomorrow, who can say?  A few weeks ago I thought about taking a hike out there, but stayed home.  :-(  Now it's probably gone.  I should have taken the hike while I could.

Eyes have been watering so bad, looks like I am crying,. Was watching ash falling almost like snowflakes today here in Portland.  Saw two vehicles covered in ash go by.  Was going to ride my bike form the old place to where I am now living but decided, "nope".. At least the buses, LRT trams, and streetcars are climate contolled. Been seeing more and more people wearing bandanas or surgical masks over theri noses and mouths.   Yeah it's been really bad.
