is there a limit in numbers of nodes and density ?
With Garibaldi 1.1beta, I tried a figure with 7 nodes and 300 for density for hairs covering the whole body,
it worked. but suddenly after an edit, if I try to set all node visible in the preview, then Daz (4.6.2.118) crashes.
As far as I know, you're only limited by the amount of memory you have.
By way of comparison, the lion I posted earlier has the body hair amount set to 25 and it generates over 1 million hairs. Seven nodes at 300 each has to be generating an insane amount of hair.
Remember, the amount is number of hairs generated per square centimeter of surface painted full white.
That's interesting,
My new system will have a maximum of 16gb of RAM, will that be man enough to do what you have?
CHEERS!
i couldnt find my hair plugins at first (i have garibaldi express and LAMH), but it was because i had installed the latest update to DS in a different location (didnt want to lose my May 2013 version). once i had re-installed to the new DS location it worked a dream - even better than the old DS 4.6.1, which was a bit crashy.
Gone, didn't we do some calculating the total numbers of hairs, back in the beta threads when trying to come up with some ponytails and stuff? And how much memory was needed?
I remember from those discussions, that "insane" is kind of mild for the amount of RAM that much hair will eat up...
A 10 cm square...that 100 cm^2...times 300...that's 30,000 hairs...times 7...that's 210,000...and that's just a little square...go to something bigger. As a comparison, the average adult male has a surface area of almost 2 sq meters....so covering a Genesis figure at that density would be almost 40 million hairs....
As I mentioned back on page 50, I have a quad core duo with 6 GB - so I think 16 should work OK. :)

It was late when I wrote that and I didn't want to try doing the math again so insane seemed like a safe bet. :)
BTW, there is an upper limit to how large a value you can set in amount - it's 1,000. Number of nodes is still limited only by available memory.
Gone,
Your fur settings helped. I can't post it here yet but I will when it is released. Thanks.
Is this plugin good for creating facial hair? I assume it is but I can't find any examples of Gandalf-like beards and such, just fur and hair.
Something like this, perhaps?
Here's one I did back in the beta days...
Posting old renders? Come on! You can do better than that! :) :)
If I actually had the plugin...but I haven't gotten it (yet)...partly because my 3d budget has been non-existent, lately and partly because I was waiting until I got a new hard drive (that happened yesterday). Been spending too much money on car repairs, this winter...it's been very hard on my vehicles.
Well, that's no fun. :(
A couple of quick edits, a change of clothes and scenery and our actor has a new role. :)
Nevermind: Been reading previous posts! Move along. :D
Gone, thanks for posting those renders! I like the look of the long beard, can the plugin also achieve a stubble look or shorter beards as well?
Yes...about the only thing it can't do, easily, are ponytails (they can be done, but aren't easy) and actual 'physics'...gravity/wind/'soft body'/collisions. You need to comb/pose for those effects...
The first stubble took about 5 minutes to create - which is why it could be better. :) Second was a 2 second mod, third was a 15 second mod.
I think you get the idea. :)
One of these days, I'll get around to making arm and leg hair.
Alright, I'm sold, getting this plugin as soon as I have some cash! Thanks for the quick responses!
Saw the mogwai - furred the mogwai. :)
wow, he's beautiful, great use of hair !
is it possible to get the 3D file ?

Out of curiosity, how does one do medium-long to very-long hair using Garibaldi?
I tinkered around with it last night, and got a pretty fantastic pixie-bob going on for my efforts, but I'm wondering how I would do something longer. I originally set the hair length to maximum (Which didn't seem very long to me, but perhaps I am dumb), and then when I started working on styling it, noticed that the visible length bounced back to about half of what I'd set it to.
Again, as I was just tinkering and trying to get a positive result (rather than exactly what I wanted right out of the gate), I think it worked pretty well. Nice pixie bob with two-toned hair and a good set of styling.
But say I wanted to set up something like this:
Female model
Hair length (front) set to middle of breastbone/sternum
Hair length (back) set to nape of neck
Undercut buzz on rear of head/neck optional
Middle part
Clear around ears
I'm sure that the starter would be "Set the hair to a uniform length then style it" - which is logical and makes sense. But...
How would I get the hair to that length at the start? Perhaps I'm missing a setting somewhere to get the hair out that long to start?
You can repeat the lengthening...I can't remember how, right off the top of my head, but I kind of recall having to switch back and forth between the lengthen and something else...
Gone will know for sure.
What are the vendor's plans to continue developing Garibaldi Express? The website looks a little deteriorated with typos and broken links, and I am concerned that this tool may have run its course.
I own it, and I think it is a great tool. I am just curious if there are plans to continue developing it.

Such faith! :)
Yes, you can select another tool then reselect the lengthening tool and repeat.
Or......
You can click in the number field and enter whatever value you want - within reason. All the number fields in all the panes are clickable. Some have max limits so if the number you type isn't accepted you know you have exceeded the max possible for that function.
For the style you want, it would probably be best built with several nodes - but to experiment, you can start by setting a value around 8 - 10 in the scale tool, comb it down then use the scale tool in increments to either lengthen or shorten as needed.
I had an email from him a couple of months ago and he assured me that he was going to be continuing to develop Garibaldi.
That said, it should be recognized that his day job is VFX programming specializing in hair systems - usually in the movie industry. He has a pretty impressive bio, including work on the Hobbit and the Deadly Hollows movies from Harry Potter.
From what I've heard about the industry, when you are on a project you live and breath that project 24/7 until completion. Unfortunately, a project could take months so there would be no work on Garibaldi during that time.
Personally, I expect work to be sporadic but I'm also confident that when something is released it is going to be solid.
In the words of Wakko Warner: FABOO.
I'll try to snag some time to try this tonight. :)
Does anyone know if it is possible to use the exported obj file as hair guides in another application like LightWave? LightWave uses curves to build hair guides, which are then converted to 2 point polys. I would really love to use the styled hair as hair guides and render in LightWave if at all possible.
Also, would anyone be willing to share an exported obj file for testing? I'm very interested in getting a solution for my LightWave projects and having an actual obj export might help to evaluate whether this is possible or not.
You can export the OBj file exactly the same way like fiber in Zbrush , in this case all you can do is export the OBJ and use as hair guides
and the exported structure will be exactly the same as exported from Zbrush
