...been pretty normal weather wise around here for a change. Temps around 50° or just above with occasional rain, that's a usual Oregon winter.  However seems another little bout of "real winter" is on the way this Friday. Hopefully the forecast will change by then as I have a business meeting that day.

  • kyoto kidkyoto kid Posts: 41,925

...ugh just looked at hte forecast before turning in. Frozen water from the sky returns on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, first as freezing rain then as snow on Friday with temps dropping back into the upper 20s.  Never seen it happen as much in one winter here as I have this year.  For today (Tuesday) heavy rain and flood warnings.

    Off to bed.

Sigh, the jokes you have to explain. Thought it was a pretty well known "stuck in the cooler" meme. But perhaps not.

A side benefit to being the first to reach the cab.  You can chop up the late comers. surprise

Or if you're a celebrity you won't be bothered by paparazzi! yes

I think I can get a refill of the coffee I got this morning.   I  think I can as I have not left the mall yet.   oooh I love coffee.  oh wait was I eating lunch?

  • TSasha SmithTSasha Smith Posts: 27,298

I think I was given a regular size sandwich instead of a small sandwich.  I am not sure as I do not use a bun but eat the sandwich on fries.  It just seems like a lot of chicken for a small.   I am currently at the Y.  Why?   So I can visit the pool.    I am thinking of not finishing this "small" chicken sandwich on fries but hope it is still okay after I swim.

So which will come first? Dismemberment by meatgrinders, crash (including out of juice, overweight pax/out of limits CofG) or kidnap?

I saw on the news that a commuter jet crashed into some buildings...a mall, perhaps.  Not near you, I hope!  It was in Melbourne, I think.

Oh frabjous day!  Callooh!  Callay!  I just checked the season schedule for Chautauqua this summer and the first symphony performance in the brand new amphitheater will be a Tchaikovsky night. http://ciweb.org/calendar/eventdetail/3291/chautauqua-symphony-orchestra

Amazing Pianist Alexander Gavrylyuk (Gav-RILL-yuck) returns to Chautauqua to play the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto #1.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yue6Cb5OULM  2nd movement at 22:25, 3rd movement at 29:25.  Check out the one minute begining at 14:30. yes

Mr. Gavrylyuk has returned to Chautauqua for several years with incredible performances of Russian masterworks as well as Brahms, Mendelssohn & others.  I expect to be as impressed with this Tchaikovsky staple as I was with his performances of Rachmaninoff's 1st, 2nd, and 3rd piano concertos in years past. (short clip of him playing a bit of the 2nd Rachmaninoff piano concerto https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aOceOnRrJqc&list=RDRqIwcq74MCg&index=7  smiley

Here's a 10 minute clip of a piece he played at Chautauqua one night. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=USCF6-fIXPU  (Brahm's variations on a theme by Paganini).  Read the comments. yes The ovation at the end is typical of performances by Gavrylyuk.  Amazing performer and when here at Chautauqua he holds classes for the students on campus.

One characteristic of Gavrylyuk performances at Chautauqua, he always gets standing ovations and he plays several encores much to the audience's delight.

    ----------------------------------------------

After intermission the CSO (Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra) plays Tchaikovsky's Symphony #4 ("Fate") This is a very powerful piece and one I've been anxious to hear live.  (One minute clip with a VERY animated Leonard Bernstein conducting) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RCeJOneswOU  and that's only the end of the 1st movement! surprise  For the full performance:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEHNGgrEYyA 2nd movement at 19:30, 3rd movement at 30:15, 4th movement at 35:28.  Notice that the 3rd movement (30:15) uses pizzicato (plucking) of the violins & other strings instead of using the bow.

Wikipedia  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symphony_No._4_(Tchaikovsky) says: "As the composer explained it, the programme of the first movement is—"roughly"—that "all life is an unbroken alternation of hard reality with swiftly passing dreams and visions of happiness ...". He went on: "No haven exists ... Drift upon that sea until it engulfs and submerges you in its depths".
