Hanabi: For what it's worth, for anything but extreme closeups, the standard optimized skin or, better, the IG essentials freebies will do an excellent job.

Most of the skin thread stuff is trying to get that last percent or two of closeup quality, IMO.

I was very happy to find that Reptilian 6 HD morphs transfer quite well to Genesis 1. Even the legs and tail work (though you have to hide the shins/feet yourself)!

Alas, the actual Reptilian skin is a special G2M-only UV set. I might try seeing if map transfer will work, but I'm not hopeful.

Anyhow, here's a Genesis 1 figure with Reptilian morphs, Creature Creator scaly skin, and then a geoshell with M4 muscle maps underneath. ;)

I really like this render.  To me, the gloss on her face seems a slight bit too strong for the lighting, and maybe a little less roughness? (if you're using Metalicity/Roughness base mix). Really nice job all the way around, though.

An experiment with grass pack went a bit out of hand.

Haven't posted an image here in quite a while, so here is one I did a few weeks ago (more info on it in my galllery). Be sure to zoom to full resolution.

Yes, it's the Entwined outfit. I bought at RDNA during the closout sale (unfortunately is't not available there now).

Experimenting with map transfer, now that I know how it's supposed to work and that many of the failures I've experienced are just because some maps don't transfer very well.

Here I've transfered Reptilian 6 to a Michael 4 UV, and placed it on a Genesis figure. Which is cool, though I admit there's not a huge amount of point to it since I can't use the geografts well and there's nothing in particular I can do with Genesis that I can't do with Genesis 2... but hey, there you go.

(I tried making a 4 armed reptilian, but trying to get stuff to fit on 4 arms is, well. Several orders of magnitude harder)

To be precise, it's the last 1.38524%.  And yes, it's a veritable overload of math-gone-wild.

    Very cool reptile renders!

And that is why you need to at least wear a loin cloth...

  • Little test run of a gimmicky contraption I've been working on.  I call it the BlizzardCam (because SnowCam sounded too plain).  I know, I know...I get zero points for originality with either name.

No postwork.  I made use of mCasual's snowy terrain (available in the Freebies forum) with some shader tweaks.  HDRI background is from HDR Labs, I think.

If anyone is interested in the BlizzardCam, I'll package it up after I do a few more tweaks to it and post it in Freebies.  Prepare to be underwhelmed.

It looks great! I like the overall effect.

MJC in the Freebies section has an AMAZING script that turns heightmaps into morphs. I... have no idea how the magic works, but it produces better results than a displacement map and with MUCH less hit to the machine. I'm... gobsmacked.

This experiment didn't go as well as I wanted. Using MOLA heightmaps of Mars, piped through Elevate script, and turned into a terraformed Martian surface.

The water came out nicely, but the rest kinda looks like poop. Ah well.

  • I actually kind of like it, Will.  How did you texture the land areas?

  • Oso3DOso3D Posts: 15,105

I used the original landscape map and added a 'highlands rock' and 'snowy peaks' mask. The rock is the base object, the greenery is a geoshell with +.01 offset masked to show higher, and then caps another geoshell at .02 masked the other way. The caps are set to be fairly transparent to show some underlying stuff more.

The greenery and stone is from FilterForge -- Complex Ground (mix of greens and browns plus bump/normals), and Stony Sand (sandy color, bump/normals).

It's a little frustrating, because the converter I found spits out a not particularly high resolution bit of land (883x883? Meh). I'm not sure if it's transferring the data very well, but the freakin' MOLA data is in some bizarro format that's a PITA to get to. Amusingly, the USGS has an image reader, ISIS, that's available in just about every OS _except_ Windows. Mutter.

There's more accurate maps, apparently, from Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, but so far it seems to be very focused snapshots, not a survey.

For reference, that map is about 250 KM across, with a height variation of 2.5 km (from deepest water to peaks). I tried to use a direct light from the side to highlightfeatures, but at this 'height' it all tends to get lost.

I should see if I can do a render of Olympus Mons, though 'realistically' the slope is amazingly slight -- the entire mountain would cover most of the state of Washington, and from its surface you can't really tell you are on a slope at all.
