Yay!
Fingers crossed he doesn't discover Barney or Sesame Street. Or worse, Tellytubbies.
Complaint: It's heeeeeeeere... the dreaded 95+ (35+) temps have arrived in full force.
Non-complaint: Just threw an AC unit into the bedroom window. Stopped by the hardware store to stock up on that shiny foil bubble wrap stuff to seal up the windows, and a test panel of rigid insulation to play around with. The rigid insulation has an R-value of 6.5, and a gigantic 4'x8' panel is only $29 USD. Very tempted to just block up the windows for the summer and live like a vampire.
Complaint: The people who make the shiny foil bubble wrap stuff also glue an enormous sticker on it for display purposes. The sticker does not peel off, so the first 3 feet of your roll is somewhat wasted.
Non-complaint: It might be hot but it is gorgeous today. All of the wildfire smoke has blown away to menace some other part of the country while we bake under some amazingly clear and blue skies.
or that lamb puppet singing the song that never ends!
it they are red like fire ants, run away!!! Run away!!!!
The ants here are just pavement ants. I live in New England where ants are not red, fortunately.
When we had ants indoors, we used this stuff called Terro liquid ant bait. It is in a small clear plastic container, and has a clear liquid in it. I opened it by breaking off the tab at the end, and left it in the path of the ants. All but a few of the ants were gone by the next morning. I don't know what would happen if one of those things were used outside. Maybe ants are actually supposed to be outside.
Tiny ants: At first I was going to say that your tiny ants might be "pissants" but although I was certain what I meant by that term, I wasn't quite sure what the proper definition was. So I looked it up. Or rather I asked Google's AI mode. I didn't copy the answer but it was more complicated than I had thought. Apparently there is a type of ant that is specifically called Pissant, because they and their lodgings smell like piss.
They are rather large, actually larger than typical ants in western NY State (Google AI mode is great at summarizing comparisons if you ask the right questions.) I didn't know about them. My understanding was that the term "pissant" was a generic term applied to any type of teeny tiny ants, like 1 or 2mm. Like this. Are your ants in that list?
Note: "Pissant" is also a derogatory term for insignificant people.
I'm not good at entomology, but I think my ants are these: https://www.canr.msu.edu/resources/pavement-ants
I do not think my remote works like any other remote I have had. It seems to do things without me pressing any button. Just by my finger resting on the round navigation thing. It is strange.
My cat got her stitches out this morning, and the vet said everything looks good. She has to wear the cone for two more days though. She is not pleased about that.
Oh I love Sesame Street! Bring it! Life is good when he gets on a Sesame Street bender.
Tellytubbies aren't so bad, either. They're not great, but they don't make me want to put my ears out with a spork from two rooms away. At least they're reasonably quiet and not screechy. (I think he gets bored with them easily though because they only show up occasionally, and never for long.)
Thankfully we've dodged Barney. And Caillou.
Suuuper not fond of Pinkalicious, though, and he goes through runs of that one.
Right now he's on Donkey Hodie, which I also don't like (one of the world's greatest works of satire reduced to a fuzzy donkey on a children's show... Cervantes is rolling in his grave I'm sure of it) but that one never has a lot of staying power. We'll see what tomorrow brings. Maybe I'll get lucky and he'll get on another run of watching Cirque de Soliel. That never gets old, though it does make me wistful for the one time I went. That night was pure magic.
Regardless.... heat index is in the triple digits all week, so unless we can get our schedule screwed around to morning walks it's gonna be a loooong week. I'll go even if I'm uncomfortable, but that crosses the line into unsafe.
re: ants - can't you just leave them? I mean, unless they're getting into the house, aren't they just part of the ecosystem?
I had no idea I would be grateful that my son was 1.5 years to almost 5 when we lived in Athens Greece without AFRTS TV (American Armed Forces TV) forbidden by the Greek Government. Until VCR/Beta machines came out, no mindless programs in the homes. For entertainment we had books and we went to movies at the base theatre. Or visited with folks or toured ancient Greek sites, the beach, or bistros. And played/watched T-Ball and laughed when the outfield ran off for a bathroom break on their own. (1979 to 1982) Of course his teachers hated it. He hadn't been turned into a mindless drone by the time he hit public school in the states. Had no idea of Ronald McDonald or Big Bird. He did know some Greek which flummoxed the teachers.
More rain, more gravel: It rained again a few days ago. Yesterday I saw the up-the-hill farmer neighbor out with his tractor scraping up more of his garden dirt from the catch point at the bottom of the hill, again. It made a couple of tractor scoops full, but was peppered with road gravel, almost more gravel than dirt. I'm beginning to think he might be collecting the gravel.

Non-complaint: It's been at least three weeks since I had another bloody nose. Yay!
Fingers crossed, again.
Complaint: I had to make a toddle up to the local grocery yesterday for a partial grocery run. Prices are scary!
Tuckered me out. Had to sit on my porch steps when I got home before taking the groceries inside. Gittin' old.
'Nother Non-complaint: It's been two weeks since I've been uptown but yay, it's time for another mini-adventure. Wednesday is an appointment with my primary physician, which means that I take the bus to have breakfast at the little cafe next to the hospital, toddle a half block down the hill to visit the doctor, toddle back up the hill to the hospital to get a blood test, get an Uber to the near edge of the city to the little hole-in-the-wall beanery in the decrepit old mini-mall for a proper lunch, and a toddle to the Chinese take-out for some Szechuan Chicken, and a second toddle to the Subway to get a sub sandwich, and then Uber home. Or alternatively, skip the lunch, Szechuan Chicken, and sub sandwich, to just go straight from the hospital to the big grocery for the other half of grocery needs, then Uber home. Depends on timing. Rates vary significantly during the morning. Sometimes I can justify two short Ubers to hop around within the city (bus routes suck), but I always have the long Uber for the final ride home. Decisions, decisions, do I need the gratification of the lunch, Chinese takeout & Sub sandwich, or do I submit to the wisdom of completing my grocery needs at a proper (& cheaper) grocery store?
Eternal Quandry: Needs vs Wants vs Wisdom
I think it's about time your neighbour farmer bloke installed a retaining wall
COMPLAINT: Threads asking "What xxxxxx is this?" being posted in completely the wrong boards and not being moved to the proper place. Product Suggestions they are not, nor are they Technical issues.
Shocking news via text. Hopefully I still get some hotspot data as I do not want to spend more to get more hotspot data.
The hill is rather steep. I don't see how he could have a productive farming arrangement on his property. But perhaps he could learn a thing or two from Andean terracing & hillside sculpting.
It's not a real farm with herds of cattle or vast fields of crops. He has an old barn, and a couple of large gardens behind his house, and some small barnyard animals. (Thank god he got rid of the pigs) He used to have horses which he kept in the long steep yard front of the house that runs down to the main street, right past my kitchen window. I think the horses were in deference to his teenage daughter's starry eyed obsession. Someone just happened to point out to town officials that farm animals cannot be kept within pooping distance of houses and roads within the town, and the horses went away. That lot is now used as parking space for his various small trailers that come and go during various times of the year. He does mow & trim weeds in the front yard (it's a BIG yard) every week and it looks OK even with the trailer(s) parked there. Nice guy, but I do think he needs to rethink his dirt situation.
An Observation: For a couple of weeks I haven't seen the feral cat that lives in the drainage ditch on the other side of his property. Nor have I seen the cat lady leave any food at its typical haunt. The last time I saw the cat up close, it looked pretty ragged.
I dunno, I never put screen limits on Teen Kiddo, and last fall's standardized tests (beginning of 8th grade) they scored at the end of 12th. Some of the scores hadn't changed from the previous year (beginning of 7th) because they'd topped it out. They're also writing college level papers (one of the ones for English was a critique of some of Edgar Allen Poe's works through a feminist lens). And Little Dude does get a lot of benefit even out of the shows that annoy me. So personally I don't think the screens themselves are bad. (And even some of the shows I hate aren't horrible content, I just can't stand the voice acting.) And in a situation where going places just isn't an option, it's an absolute sanity saver and window to the world.
I do draw the line at shows that glorify being mean, though. Normalizing that is so, so not okay.
non-complaint: The ants are gone. IDK where they went, but they didn't come inside, so I'll call that a win.
Perhaps you caught the pissants in mid-migration.
Perhaps they found their way to a pissoir. Or perhaps a dog came by and they were pissed on, got pissed off and just got the piss out of there.
Could be. They all seemed to be just pissing around when I saw them. Maybe they were on their way to a new pissant hill.
Complaint: My email provider has been down for over 4 hours and I can't get my emails.
Send them an angry e-mail note. Oh,..., wait...
I am being forced to move and leave my home. I do not know where I am going. I did find the desktop I thought was lost. I had to give up 2 of my monitors.
Complaint: Overcharged: Grrr..., I took an unscheduled mini-adventure this morning. Got my laundry done and toddled across the street to the CVS drugstore to pick up a medically necessary personal care item. I paid in cash but my mind was wandering and I just trusted the checkout clerk . When I got home I checked my receipts and she had charged me for two of the items but I only bought one.
It cost me an extra $24.59. Not a sum I can easily ignore. Grrr..., now I'll be spending time chasing down someone on the phone and try to convince them that it was their mistake not mine. (*sigh*)
A Few Moments Later
Partial Resolution: Fought with the answering system menu at CVS for a while but finally reached a human being. Unscheduled mini-adventure this morning also accomplished lunch at the hole-in-the-wall beanery and Chinese takeout, so that simplifies my trip tomorrow and I'll just do doctor and grocery, and while at the grocery I'll pop across the street to get my cash refund at CVS. (*hopefully*)
I must concentrate when paying for things, I'm too trusting, but also getting careless in my dotage.
Complaint: Today was the first hot day of summer and the laundromat fans were broken, and there were no seats outside in the relative cool. Had to take a shower when I got home.
Non-complaint: But I came home to a cool apartment. New A/C working fine. Yay!
Forced? Do you not have any rights as a tenant?
Non-complaint: Husband & I had a good time at Free RPG Day last Saturday. Also had very good food before & after.
Complaint: first day of Extreme Heat Warning, through Thursday, and I was done with it. But it's been extended to Friday. I just took the dogs for their walk. Temps have dropped very slightly but it's so muggy. I don't want to look at the weather app to see what the temperature is.
Glad you had fun!
Yesterday (Monday for all you folk who start your days in the actual morning) the heat index was still in the triple digits at sunset, and raining hard at sunrise, so no walk for us. Today (Tuesday) we managed one at sunset as the base temp was mid-80's, but whoof the humidity. So tropical.
We'll see what the rest of the week brings. The temps are supposed to be in the 80 with high humidity overall, with intermittent rain (and sometimes storms) but the forecast keeps moving when the storms are supposed to happen. A weather nerd friend said a couple of the data sources that are used for our state no longer are in operation, so to expect things to be imprecise. I'm sure the meteorologists are doing the best they can with what they've got. I don't envy them the job, especially when things can get strongly stormy/tornado-y in the summer. That's a lot of responsibility with not as much to go on as they need.
@SilverGirl 6:30 am (ish) here & still high 70s. High temperature is supposed to be 90°F and heat index 95, but warning says it could be up 107, and I bet that's closer. Starting this weekend we're supposed to have storms every day for the whole week. We'll see.
