Weren't the spheres built by a differnt race of extra-dimensional thingies that could  detect probabilities and so plot to bring about their aims, who were using the five species from one planet as their catspaws?

Something like that. The Suliban, I think they were called. It's hard to remember.... It's been a long time.

Somehow I remember the Suliban as genetically engineered "normal-ish" (i.e. our universe) aliens, to give them the ability of perfect camouflage, being directed from some shadowy figure/thing from the future in the long threaded time-war.  But yeah, there was some sort of outside dimensional organization associated with the spheres whose purpose was to convert our space into a more habitable "space" for the outsiders so they could get a foothold in our universe.  All very confusing.  And don't get me started on the Klingon "disease" that cleared up the canon issue of their appearance, and let's not mention Dr. Phlox's sex habits.  All the plots in the series seemed to be interwoven throughout the whole series.  Good writing, but very confusing, especially when you throw in time travel and alternate universes and hidden motives.  It is a series that you MUST watch in sequential order to even have a chance of grokking it.
