Non-complaint: I think up here in Western NY State we had it easy. Snow, perhaps a foot, but most of it now seems to be over. Cold continues 10 to 15(F) until the end of the month though. I just watched our town snowplow finally clear & sand/salt the main road through town as well as our little spur halfway up the hill. Neighbors down the street have been out clearing their driveways. Very little traffic today, being Sunday, and locals knowing when to stay off the road. I just watched out of the window and sipped tea or hot cocoa. Perhaps tomorrow I'll shovel my porch.
...the Gateway Arch was designed by Eero Saarinen who was the same architect who designed the "Iconic" TWA terminal at JFK.
He also designed the War Memorial in my old hometown of Milwaukee WI.
Well, things were less eventful on the other side of the state. It didn’t get much colder than 0° F (-18° C). And the snow was only maybe 6 inches.
But my mother doesn’t like me to be cold. She seemed to think my outfit was more suited for summer than winter. The thing is, I wear the same clothes in summer and winter. I don’t know if they’re summer clothes or winter clothes. I did switch my light jacket for a heavy coat though. And even a wool cap.
So she gave me gloves. Gloves that I think were given to her by her sister. And they were warm... and they worked very well. The problem is they seem very fashionable. Like these are gloves you’d see Whitney Houston wearing. Or some woman who wants people to see how good she looks in her winter outfit. And I was using them to shovel snow and empty trash. And who knows if it was a summer or winter outfit?
It was so cold, the snow never melted or refroze to become the hardest material known to humans. I’ve never found it so easy to shovel. Easy, even though I had put my boots away since nobody was ever going to let me mow lawn again, and I had shoes truly not meant for snow. It’s the emptying of trash that I didn’t like. There was one giant bag, heavy with the weight of kitty litter and whatnot. And I had to lift it high enough to get it into the bin. With those gloves… and those shoes. But I got it done. And as I walked back in and the garage door closed, I sang, “And iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii will always love yoooooouuuuuuuuu”.
If there are any neighbors who didn’t already think I’m crazy, they do now.
We lost power this afternoon when a transformer went out. (No, I don't think it was the robots-in-disguise kind.) Anyway, it was only 4°F out at the time, and since our boiler needs electricity to run, we had no heat. Fortunately power was only out for about an hour. But an hour without power in the dark feels like a long time.
12 Inches in total, in my Area. Bone chilln Temps.
Complaint: My internet is laggy after the snowfall. Gameplay in Elite Dangerous was weird. I was mining, and the things I mined were there. Sent out the probes to gather materials and strange sounds coming from my drones, then lag. It clears up, and all my mined stuff is refined and in my cargo hold. Most of the Game is peer-to-peer, so that could be one problem if you have a bad peer connection, or their central server here in the US.

This was my speed test when I got out of the Game. Bad Peer
Non-complaints: We haven't lost power & pipes aren't frozen. It is warm in bedroom with heater, lots of covers & 2 cuddly puppers. Called out of work - well tried to since no one answered - because of unplowed road.
Complaints: Unplowed road. Snow is just crusty enough I can't shovel it. Too cold to take puppers on a snow hike. Forecast for tonight is low of 12°F - which is supposed to be "near record" - & probably below 0 wind-chill & more very cold weather late in week.
Complaint: Shoveling snow off of the porch: My porch is covered, but open. It's about 8x8 feet square with three steps off the front, beyond the roof, down to the first 6 inch deep rut of the driveway.
So, when snow comes, the steps get it all, and the porch itself gets less and less, the closer to the house you get. When I opened the door this morning I had three inches immediately at my doorstep on top of my welcome mat, about six inches at the front of the porch, and about a foot on the steps. A bit much to sweep with a broom, so I used my handy-dandy snowshovel kept on the porch all winter for just such occasions, and for anybody nearby who needs a handy shovel in an emergency (like your car stuck in the nearly perpetually unplowed driveway). Shoveling the snow from that tiny porch isn't hard, a few push strokes with the snowshovel, a quick whisk with the broom and ta-da, it's done! Oh, the pride of accomplishment.
However, the foot of snow on the steps required me to bend down with the shovel to get each step while standing on the next higher step to keep my unbooted feet out of the snow. The exercise and the bending down in cold, extremely dry air dries out my nasal passages, raises my blood pressure, and before you know it, I have another $#@%$&# bloody nose.
Christmas is over, I'm done with snow.
Hmmm... interesting: I was standing at my kitchen windows doing dishes about the time the school bus normally goes by. I noticed its absence. I checked with Google and sure enough, no school today probably because of weather, but at first I though it might be either George Washington's or Abraham Lincoln's birthday, but remembered that now it's a single day (10 days ago) called "President's Day" (they cheated us of a day back when I was in school shortly after Lincoln died).
Back when I was in high school, weather like this was normal, every winter. School wasn't closed unless the buses couldn't get out of the garage, my dad was a driver. I've slogged down to the bus stop in three feet of snow and -15(F) temperatures waiting for a 20 minute late bus. People and road crews are gittin' soft.
Non-complaint: Late afternoon. Neighbor guy in the other half of this house, has a snow blower machine and is clearing the driveway.
What is the status of football? I can't remember.
Football as such? Rugby Football? Autralian Rules Foortball? American Football?
I wish I couldn't remember football (American, not the rest of the world.) My favorite causal restaurant doubles as a sports bar and they've usually got multiple events running on the flatscreens, but it's usually pretty quiet and the from-scratch kitchen is fantastic... except when an NFL or big college football game is on. Then it's like sticking your head in a jet engine as the beer-lubed hard-core fans jump up and down and scream and holler like someone dropped rabid porcupines doused in napalm in their collective pants. Seriousy, it's just a game, and not a very intelligent one either.
Rather unimportant in my opinion.
Ah ha! Another one.
Query: What's a "causal restaurant"?
So . . . the next thread should be the drink your whiskey nightly . . . this 111 year old woman, this supercentenarian is sharper than a tack. I can hardly remember where I put my keys and I am only 69.
...Seattle and New England will be playing in the Superbowl two weeks from now.
A bunch of fireworks unexpectedly went off right outside my house last night, and my brother-in-law explained that it was because the Seahawks won, and I thought he said the Super Bowl, but maybe he just said it was because they would now be GOING to the Super Bowl.
After the blizzard hit after half-time Sunday and Patriots won, Denver was devastated. I expect Seattle will have a lot of supporters here. I know that is one city I had a great layover in 1975, lovely city. And Bad Bunny at half-time will be a draw. I might watch just for him.
Don't ship Mercury the kitty as it is not legal. She will be one angry and dangerous kitty.
Non-complaints: 1. A Good Samaritan gentleman came by on his tractor & cleared out our driveway yesterday. We don't know him. Although of course we introduced ourselves. He was just doing drives as favors. He told me I was the only person who'd offered him coffee when I brought him a cup. Extra thankful as it snowed all day Saturday, sleeted* Saturday night, snowed more on Sunday, got very cold Sunday night so there was a very hard crust that I couldn't shovel very well.
2. Yesterday & today it's been warm enough to take the doggos for Snow Walks. Weird how warm 20-ish F feels after the weekend.
3. Tomorrow is payday
* Sorry if that's not the correct past tense. I lived 2/3 of my life in Florida
Oh eew, that's the worst kind of precipitation to clear off. So glad you had help. (And for what it's worth, the past tense of "sleet" in my family is a word I'm not allowed to use on the forums, but in polite company I've always heard what you used. :) )
You are correct. Sleeted
But I do accept your excuse. Been there, done that, burned the t-shirt.

Yet in the news, no one is talking about. Artemis II rocket mission to the moon: in February.
I saw that. I wish them luck, we need more than SpaceX if only to keep them on their toes. But I worked at the Kennedy Space Center and know that rocket launches should be treated like eggs, chickens and counting.
Tired of false advertising . . . so I reported them and guess what, they are fixing all three appliances. Sosad you have to report businesses that offer things they do not deliver. Is false advertisiing worth it? Why risk those fines?
I've seen Soccer fans over the last ten or so years. And I grew up and still dwell in Southeast Tennessee, where the only team sports were Football, Baseball and Basketball, in that order.
The rabid fans of all four of those sports are indistinguishable from from each other. I'm a fan of SEC (Southeastern Conference) football and now soccer (because of my brother who used to coach a local kids' team where he used to live).
The big difference between Soccer and American Football that I've noticed is the players, not the fans. American football players cry mostly when they lose. Soccer players cry when they fall over.
This has been a joke. I repeat, this has been a joke.
Ich bin müde. Ich bin wirklich müde!
I am tired of being treated like a problem. Something that needs to be controlled and told to behave and do what I'm told and shut up.
I can't follow blindly. I don't have the ability to follow anyone or anything blindly. I'm sick of trying to justify every stupid thing I do or buy. Especially to someone who won't justify how they treat me. I am tired of my support team talking to me instead of with me.
I want to scream but I have no mouth. Actually I have a mouth but I might as well not have one. No one who can do something will listen. The only ones who can hear me are powerless to change any stupid thing.
Maybe that is why I have faith in God. He is the only one who can listen and can do something. I know on His time not mine. I'm overwhelmed, overstimulated, overstretched and too worn out.
IIt's been posted before (and is offensive beyond sports) but to confirm
Here's a really good summary of Artemis and the three major players in the US return to the moon scenario.
Lol. Thanks for that Richard.
I DO know why a trip or a kick to the shins results in an arm across the face to hide the "tears".
They are trying to get the official to give the offender a yellow card, perhaps even a red. It's a strategy, not a tragedy. They're trying to get members of the opposition tossed out of the game.
And I definitely can tell when a player is really injured. They are taken out of play by the coach.
Major Complaint: Snowmegedan is coming. 10 to 16 inches of snow is pedicted this wekend for the Outer Banks where I live and winds of 40 to 60 mph. This may not seem like much to some of you but for an area not accostumed to snow and wher even 1 to 2 inches will cause shutdowns for several days this could be a real disaster.
Take Heart: Snow is better than ice. Only 1 to 2 feet of snow won't collapse your roof (unless you live in a rusty trailer). Snow can be shoveled (or broomed, with effort) off your car. Power lines probably won't break. Just don't plan to go anywhere soon. Have food & medicine on hand. If the temperature goes below 20F for more than a day, make sure to leave sink cabinet doors open, and let the faucets drip slightly or use them a little every couple of hours, especially at night and especially if you have any pipes running along uninsulated exterior facing walls. After the storm, watch for snow/ice sliding from the roofs. Don't let children play with hanging icicles. Otherwise enjoy the isolation.
Yeah, I've been reading about the Moon Mission for a while. The design of the Artimis II looks interesting.
