Ah, I wasn't meaning car or home insurance or medical/dental insurance. Just for things like maintenance of your house's equipment (not covered by home insurance), your car's physical equipment, or pet insurance. I know there is pet insurance out there, but I have no idea how well it might cover an emergency surgery or long-term illness (cancer...) or if it is just for shots and whatnot.
As many who live around recent fire disasters have found out on the news, it is important to make sure your home insurance covers rebuilding at current costs, rental while rebuilding is going on, and all the items you have inside the domicile and the current code requirements. Same with making sure your insurance covers a variety of disasters like flood, wind, rockslides, vehicles smashing into your homes, these are just some of the examples I have heard being denied where people thought they were covered. I have listened to reports from the Marshall Fire and also a few from Los Angeles and it is not a pretty situation.
Funny thing, my Renter's Insurance just came in today for the year and I immediately paid it. Thankfully, my area of Denver is still not being jacked up to cover the high fire danger the Foothills may have.
What I loved about living and driving in the UK was the requirement for my car to meet certain safety standards of operation. And that it was tough to get a license. I wish the USA would adopt a similar standard for all vehicles to meet that standard before they can operate on the roads and for drivers to meet the same level of standards.
...maybe the takeout box was actually a transmogrifier in disguise?
ALL the maps in my head are old because my head is old. And somehow my body seems to be even older than my head...but my head is swiftly catching up.
What was the question again?
My Crisis Is That My Dinner Is Cold
My crisis is that my dinner is cold,
My dinner is cold,
My dinner is cold.
My crisis is that my dinner is cold,
So early in the evening.
Yep, that tracks.
Odd, there was a quote on the first message I wrote.
Well, it was either Operator Error (AKA my fault) or the the usual Forum Hiccups. (shrug)
I'm at the movies,
Wicked 2?
You don't look well.
Feelin' kind'a green?
Complaint: Currently 4(F) and lightly snowing. Prediction is for -1(F) by 4:00 AM (Saturday), continuing below 10(F) till three days of slight warming to 20(F) and heavy snow beginning Sunday.
Non-Complaint: Not worried. No place to go, and I have hot cocoa.
Sorta complaint: My Family wants me to pack up my stuff and drive an hour to stay with them for the next 4 days because of the ice storm warnings ,and the fear that the power might go out ,but from where I looking the power is more likely to go out where they are ,then where I am,an yes I understand that it could still go out here but until it does I have all the things I need right here .Ithink I am being reasonable they think I'm just being stubborn
Yes
yeah feeling green.
They are probably thinking that even without power they would be in a better position to help you.
Do you have enogh supplies to go 2-3 days without power ? Do you have alternate sources of heat and water? I'm not sure where your family is but looking at the forcast you could recieve up to 0.2" ice accumulation from of freezing rain which is enough to cause widespread power outages.
No I don't have any alternative sources of heat or water ,but I have filled water jugs ,just in case ,Family is in Raliegh and Carey ,whiile I'm in Lucama/Wilson area ,east of 95 ,and I agree they think they'd be in a better position to help me ,but I'm also looking at having to stay in conditions that aren't very comfortable or convenient for me ,plus I don't understand how they expect me to pack my car by myself with all my "needs "
You are actully bit west of where I thought you were (ie Greenville) Did you move in the last couple of years? At any rate both you and Raleigh are predicted to have high ice accumulation. Could your family possibly come to get you and help you pack.?
At any rate however you decide I hope you don't loose power for a long period of time specially since it will turn very cold and be well below freezing Monday and Tuesday. Please let us know how you are doing after the storm is over.
Nope haven't moved , still think that there might be less power outages where I am then in the bigger more metropolitian areas ....... could be wrong .......
But the bigger metrpolitan areas are ore likely to have there power restored quicker.
Here is a map of the power outage predictions

thank you for the map it still looks to me like I'm in the isolated power outages ,so still thinking ......it hurts .....
I agree with Charlie that an urban area is likely to see power restoed befoe a rural area if there are widespread issues as the company will prioritise fixes by the number of people affected and probably by how accessible the problem needing fixing is - having engineers make long trips to help fewer people versus shorter trips to help many. Of course if you are in the ame area as a high priority site and your family aren't that may tilt the scales, but as a general rule it is likely to apply.
Warum schlafe ich nicht? Ich bin wirklich müde, und ich muss schlafen! Ich schlafe nicht.
...the big storm is the "big news" as it took up nearly half tonight's newscast.
Currently in Stevens Point WI it is already -19° (F) heading to a low of -23° (and that is before the wind effect is figured in).
Some areas in the state are expecting wind chills of -50 or colder.
This is a bit late to the conversation, but what about road conditions? How safe will/are they for you to drive on to and from your family? The pictures I have seen on national news last night were pretty intense and awful.
@carrie58 IIRC you are on well water. It is going to be well below freezing for the next few days; so don't forget to put a heat source (such as a heat lamp) in your well house.
Complaint: Humidity, or rather the lack of it. I have two brand new room humidifiers, a 4 liter one downstairs, and a 3 liter one upstairs in my bedroom. I usually only run one at a time (carrying water upstairs is a chore I try to do as little as possible.) I need humidity because if my nasal interior dries out, it cracks and bleeds. I've found that if I keep the room humidity above 30% I'm OK. But with all this recent extreme cold, dry air, the poor humidifier pumps its little heart out and struggles, failing to reach 30%, falling down to around 27%. Yesterday I forgot about the humidifier and it ran out of water and the humidity fell to 24% before I noticed when I dripped onto my keyboard because I had another #@$%@$#&* spontaneous nose bleed.
And since I take blood thinner drugs for my heart problems, it takes quite a while for it to clot properly, delaying my computer task for a half hour. Also, the healing nasal tissues take several days before I feel safe enough to venture into public again. I would not do well in Arizona.
Non-complaint: Heavy snow starts tomorrow (Sunday) morning for two and a half days, but temperatures will hover between 10 and 15(F), better than the 0(F) temps that have been hanging around for the last day or so.
Complaint/non-complaint: Little Dude sometimes gets stuck on videos/games on his tablet that are dysregulating him and has trouble with transitioning out of just watching them on loop. "Pick something that makes you happy; you don't have to watch things that upset you," I tell him, and try to guide him through some options or off to a new activity.
I suddenly realized why every time I'm checking the local news he comes over and tugs me away from the computer, or wants me to put down my tablet.
Come snuggle me, Mama. You don't have to look at things that make you cry.
...if only life was that simple, baby.
Heavy snow. Additional snow accumulations between 7 and 10 inches. Got 6 inches right now, with a wind chill of -6 F or -14C, I'm just outside St. Louis.
My snow story
I was in St. Louis a couple of times, back in the '90s. I was there to install software on a big HP UNIX system for the electric company at the time ("UNION Electric", I think). During a snow storm (well, I think it was that particular trip). I left early and had to come back later because the hardware guy with me from our Virginia based company assembled the racks and installed the system and plugged it in to the 220v outlets while its powersupply was still configured for 110v.
Wheee..., magic blue smoke everywhere.
I remember my company putting me up in a fancy old hotel in downtown. Very picturesque, but dated. And the streets downtown were dead after dark. Which seemed to be typical of mid-west cities back then.
The snowstorm was nasty, glad to be out of there before it got worse. On one of the trips to St. Louis I did make it up inside the Arch.
