...so been having something annoying happening lately. it seems just about any time I right click in something, for example, like a folder to check attributes, a newly created folder to name it, or a zip file to extract it, I get a "wait" cursor. that lasts for several minutes before I can do anything. Anyone knows what may be causing this and if there is some way to fix it?
Did you scan your computer for viruses and disk errors? Are you experiencing excessive hard drive access? Maybe you have a program running in the background that hooked itself to the shell, file manager or My Computer windows? Anti virus might be acting up? Windows Update might be slowing down your system? Perhaps your RAM or motherboard might be going bad? That is all I can think off. Sorry.
...1. Yes, I run scans regularly
2. Not on any other functions/operations.
3.. Not software running in background or it would affect opening other programmes as well which I have not experienced.
4. That would affect downloading not doing a simple operation like renaming a new folder or trying to extract a .zip file. If there was an issue with the latter, a windows dialogue would pop up regarding installing new software or my AV would pop up a warning.
5. Memory (DDR3) was newly installed out of the package.
Hopefully it isn't the MB or I'm sunk as I cannot afford a new one as then I'd also need to get a new CPU and Memory as well which is even more expensive. The MB I have is no longer available so I'd have to get a newer one which wouldn't have the same CPU socket and likely would support DDR4 memory instead of DDR3.
Have you tried using a different mouse and/or a different usb port
...yes and that isn't it either. It is something that must be happening somewhere internally. ad every time I try to right click while on the desktop it occurs. Really putting a dent in reloading all my freebies and zips from other content stores.
We don't normally have tornadoes in my area. Although, that seems to have changed in the last few years. There were a couple that were water spouts that turned to land and to tornadoes. And one was just down the cape (Cape Cod), either last year or the year before. I lose track. I've heard that under a bridge is not really a good place to be. Don't know.

#3, not neccessarily. Do you have a backup program that syncs with another drive? That could cause it. I just had that trouble a couple months ago. I turned off the sync function, and the trouble stopped.
#5. Open computer, (turned off) pull out the RAM modules and reseat them.
Does it always happen? Just after it's been running for a while, or right when you first start it up, as well? Sometimes a fresh start is a good thing to do now and then.
Dana
Only when working with things on the desktop? Have you tried opening File Explorer and going to the desktop that way?
By the way, why are your zip files on the desktop?
Dana
...that is where i extract them and then manually move the components to the proper folders as sometimes extracting directly to the runtime ends up with things going to the wrong place,or overwriting other files (particularly with freebies). As I mention I set up my own categorised structure for freebies as they don't contain any metadata.
Even with Poser format content I like to do some re-arranging as I think it is ridiculous that the "Mat " files end up in the Poses folder and have a multitude of different naming styles. I just make them subfolders of the actual content they belong to like is done in the Daz4 library. It is just critical that the Geometry and Texture files remain in those two folders..
That may be the problem. I was told that if you put too much on the desktop, it tends to slow down the computer. I do similar with zip files, but I use File Explorer, a couple copies sometimes, but I drag files from the zip archiver into the proper folders in the runtime.
Dana
...don't you have to extract them first as they are in compressed form in the archive?
That's what your archiver should be doing. I use IZArc. It's freeware, not shareware. It supports drag and drop. I can drag a file onto it to put it in a zip file, and I can drag files or even whole folders from the archiver onto a File Explorer window to extract them there. The archiver will uncompress them and drop them into the destination folder. But what I'm saying is don't put the zip files on the desktop, make a folder to put them in and unzip them from there. Make a folder under that, name it "Installed", and drag the zip files into that folder after you've installed the contents to your runtime. Then you'll know what you've got left to work on.
Dana
...so is File Explorer an integrated function in Windows (I am using W7 Pro)? When I did a search there a third party utility by the same name came up.
I only use the base archive utility that came with the OS and 7_Zip for .rar archives.

Complaint: I have a hankering for donuts and since today is an uptown micro-adventure day for laundry, trash, pharmacy, lunch, etc. I remembered I had a significant coupon for a 1/2 dozen donuts from the local Tim Horton. Yay!
Unfortunately when I got there it was raining cats & dogs and the drive-thru lane was very long. So, I decided to park, and brave the rain to go inside. Once inside I remembered that I'd left my coupon in the car, which meant that I had to make two more trips through the rain acquiring the coupon. When I finally got in line for my prize I looked at the coupon and it had expired yesterday.
Unwilling to pay the full price for my fat pills I braved the rain yet one more time to get back into the car. I don't know if getting wet was better than staying dry and having to wait 20 minutes in the drive-thru lane.
Unable to get a cheap donut fix from TimHorton's I drove back through the city, a mile or so, to the big grocery store where they have my favorite donuts. So, I parked and sloshed through the rain and dripped through the aisle all the way to the back of the store where the bakery is, only to discover that they were already all sold out of my favorite donut (plain cake) and were not going to make anymore.
Non-complaint: Excitement during my micro-adventure today. As I left the post office in my local town the fire siren blew and I watched a couple of volunteer firemen rush from their houses and run down the street to the firehall. I continued on my trip uptown but just as I got to the city I saw red flashing lights ahead of me at a major intersection and then from behind me as my town's firetruck rushed caught up with and then passed me to join the 2 or three firetrucks already there. I was the last car to make it through the intersection where the fire was before they closed off the street right where my laundromat was. Gack, NOOOO, not my laundromat, I'd have to drive all the way to the other side of city to do laundry if this laundromat died.
. Later I found out that it was the local bowling lane establishment behind my laundromat. Whew!
'Nother non-complaint: Radio in the car was playing "Morning, Noon and Night" Overture by Suppé. Music matched the excitement of the day. Right as the fire siren blew the piece started and when it reached its conclusion about 8 minutes later I'd reached the visual excitement at the fire
.
Franz von Suppé: "Morning, Noon and Night in Vienna" Overture: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qAi3ivNVTqY Listen to the first 60 seconds, but then it gets a bit dreary, so skip to 3:50 and listen as it builds thru 5:00 at which point the grand finale begins, and listen to the end. Much musical excitement!
Music to DAZ by.

'Nother non-complaint: I've discovered the BBC series "Dickensian". https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4531728/reviews If you're at all familiar with at least some of Charles Dickens books and characters then this show has done a good job of combining a lot of those characters into an "East Enders" type soap opera with excellent costuming, plots, and acting. Easily recognizable are characters from "A Christmas Carol", "Oliver Twist", "The Curiosity Shop", "Great Expectations", "Bleakhouse". I'm really interested to see how the plot line with Ms Haversham (the stale, cobwebby wedding cake lady) works out.
As a clue to the plot of the first episode you quickly discover that the story opens on Christmas Eve outside Scrooge and Marley's shop seven years before Scrooge's night of haunting, so guess what happens to Marley!
But who does him in? And will he get caught? Excellent soap opera, murder mystery. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of the episodes.
D*mn duplicate posts.
computer woes
File Explorer is the interface for the file system. It's part of Windows. Has been since Windows 7. Can't remember what it was called in Windows XP. Maybe just My Computer, but I don't think so. My Computer is just a particular view of the file system, and it opens in File Explorer. Maybe it was called Windows Explorer in Win 7. You can always just open My Computer.
Try IZArc...it does all archive types and I find it efficient and solid. And did I mention it's Freeware? https://www.izarc.org/

...well scratch that. it happened again. Apparently there is something which is causing Windows explorer to freeze as after i checked something in Task Manger later, that was when I got the wait cursor again. When I tried to bail out of it I received a message dialogue that said Windows Explorer was "not responding" and when it cleared everything went blank, no icons nos task bar, no start menu, just the background screen which lasted for several minutes. I then logged out from the CTRL+ALT+delete menu. After signing back in, something was still apparently wrong with Explorer as when I would open a folder the display looked as if the folder window was "incomplete" so I had to do a full restart to get everything working again.
Afterwards it happened again even after I shut down the CCleaner programme that was running in background., first while renaming a folder, and then I was forced to wait for what seemed like a long time (with the "Moving" dialogue box popping up) simply moving one folder (which had very little in the way of data in it) into another to consolidate the desktop.
One thought...check you video card driver. Then maybe check the card itself...pull it out and reseat it.
Dana
Edit: Maybe check the health of your hard drive. Come to think of it, I was having the trouble before my C: drive ran out of space. Maybe check space on your temp folder or Windows...ummm, forgot the name of it, uses it as memory on the fly. Even though you may choose a different drive for installations of apps, every darn one of them seems to insist on putting something on the C: drive. My 120GB SSD filled up. I got a 500GB SSD now.
Dana
Several months ago I had a similar problem with the system slowing down considerably. I finally resolved it by removing a lot of crap from "C" and doing a standard Windows "check for, and repair", of errors on drive C and a defrag.
Happy Easter, everyone who celebrates the day!
Dana
Non-Complaint: Book I enjoyed a lot is getting a sequel this October. :>
...
...downloaded and installed the latest driver for the card that controls my displays. Took fro fraggin' ever. after 30 min it was maybe 5% complete. Will see what that does. Can't afford a big SSD, was lucky to get a 240 GB for 22$. This is why I don't like software that is designed to write data to the boot drive and one reason why I will never use Daz Connect.
...
I feel like there is a clog in my nose which is causing me not to breath well with my nose.
On other news, happy Easter to those who celebrate but no happy for the baby 8.
Complaint: So, YOU'RE the guy who sucked up all the rays yesterday. It was way too dark here.
I hate the common cold. It is not fun. I prefer to breathe than to have a cold.
