Seems like a lot of extra trouble to go through.  Everything from DAZ, I let it go into the MyLibrary structure.  then, for everything else, I have a few folder structures:

    • PaidNotDAZ (which has both type folders)
    • Freebies (which has both type folders)

Then I just load each folder set through the Studio system and I have both my Studio and Poser libraries.  I don't get any more segmented than that...too complex.  Setting up runtimes is not my day job, and i won't let it be!

    Dana

...the issue is, Documents (where Daz would normally default installation to) is on C: which is only 250 GB.  My content library is much larger than that.  I also do not use the general C:/Documents folder for anything, never have for years.as I tend to categorise all my work, written or images.

By having my content library on a separate Data drive, it means I can upgrade the OS even upgrade the boot drive, without having to reinstall everything all over again.

None of my runtimes are on the C: drive, either...nor in My Documents!

You can move the Documents folder to another drive - I've been doing that sicne at least WIndows 7. (Yes, the Fall update for Windows 10 had issues with that is there were still files in the old location, but I'd suggest moving everything - it also means less fiddling if you have to reinstall Windows).

..but why bother? Why does Daz wrtie to it in the first place?.  That should be for items like text/Word/Excel files, PDFs, Pictures, Music etc. Why would 3D content have to go there when it should simply install to the Runtime/Daz Library (the item I noticed was LAMH)?

Your own fils are documents, which is what the My Library folder is used for. Theer isn't a default location for 3D content, but since videos and music go in equivalent folders (and those used to default to sub-folders of Documents) I woudl say a Documents folder is a sensible choice - it certanly isn't applications, and in any event the application folder is not writable on most systems without elevated permissions. In any event, it's the default not a mandatory location so just change it if you wish.

...but how do I keep content like LAMH from installing files there?

All content for Daz 4+ should just install into "D:/Daz3D/Studio4" as it did before just like older Poser based content (such as Gen3/4) and freebies should go to "D:/Daz3D/Studio3".

I have no intent on ever using Connect which does have a folder in C:/Documents (which is the only way that the LAMH files I saw there would have been routed to that destination).

I don't use Connect, either.  I use the DIM for anything from here.  I use IZArc to unzip things from elsewhere and manually install things into the other runtimes.  I only have the free LAMH player, not the full product, and I've never used it yet.

Oh, I just checked, and it put those LAMH things into C:\Users\Owner\Documents\DAZ3D\Studio.  Hmmmm...  Maybe there is something in the plugin that looks for things there?  Four folders, only one that isn't empty is Presets.  And there's a log file, which shows that LAMH session started.  I don't know why, I never used it!

..exactly.  Makes me wonder what will fill those empty folders and what other plugins will do the same.

Well, I think they do no harm, anyway.  Not ideal, but I don't see that it will cause any problems, aside from annoyance.

Complaint: My older computer which had been suffering from BSODs started a windows repair on startup. The first thing it wanted was to select a keyboard layout but it left the keyboard and mouse disabled. So there was no way to enter the selecion. The only thing I could do to get around it was to boot from a bootable windows 10 install usb. and reinstall Windows 10. Unfortunately this completely wiped my main C: drive. I have extra copies of my personal documents; but all my programs will have to be reinstalled and that could be weeks of work.

Non-Complaint: So far no more BSODs.

Sympathies!  I hate reinstalling after a crash!

Just create an image of your system right after everything has been installed (before Windows start to accumulate problems). Then you can restore it very quickly. AFAIK Windows has some sort of imaging tool, personally I prefer a third party tool which I know is 100% reliable.

LaMH (and Infinito) do write to the /Daz 3D/Studio folder for their regitration data - I think that things like that ought to be in the AppData folder rather than a user-facing folder, but in any event the location will respect the location of the Docuemnts folder so while you can't stop it from creating a folder in Documents you can stop it from being on C: (as long as you change the Docuemnts folder location before installing, of course). Hexagon does, or did, the same too - and possibly Carrara, I remember submitting a bug report to grumble.

Non-complaint:  Snow's almost all gone again.  Yay! yes  Went for a Saturday micro-adventure to do a couple uptown chores (garbage, lunch, and a donut run to the place that has my favorite plain cake donuts, and a stop into my CVS drugstore to use up a 20% off coupon before it expires)  Also stopped in at my local grocery store for some hamburg and potatoes and a Lotto ticket.  Weather predictions don't indicate any frozen stuff from the sky for at least a week.  Yay!

...OK created the "Studio4" folder on the Data drive.

When I click on the gear in the upper corner to change the install target, the "recommended path" is shown as C:/Users/Public Documents/My Daz 3D Library"  Do I need all that rubbish (save for the drive designator in there as well or will just D:/Studio4/Library suffice?

Really don't want ot find myself needing to uninistall and re-download everything a thrid time.

I just have "H:\DAZ3d Library\" for everything from DAZ3D, then I have "H:\Freebies\" and "H:\Paid_Not_DAZ\" for the other two runtimes.  Right off the root of the drive.

...so the naming convention of the directory isn't important then (in spite of the "suggested" one), just that the location is set in the Daz programme?

Like I said, it's been a while and a few knocks to the head haven't helped the ol' memory resources.

AS i mentioned, not wanting to have to uninstall and re-download everything for a third time.

Complaint: My label maker eats batteries like popcorn. angry  I love the labels it makes but 4 fresh AAA batteries don't last very long at all.crying  The machine has enough 'lectrons to run the keyboard & display and let me enter my label data but then turns off as soon as I ask it to print the label data I entered.  Yet if I check the batteries with a battery tester they test well into the "Good".  New batteries will often make it work for a dozen or so labels but then it just putters out.  It must require a hell of a lot of current to print the labels.  Either that or it's just a P.O.S. badly designed device.  Comments on Amazon about similar devices from the same manufacturer have many complaints about battery munching.  Better devices get you into the "pro" range and start approaching triple digit prices.  I don't need that much functionality.  Besides I still have another label tape cartridge to use up. frown  I don't mind devices eating batteries if they have an alternative power source but despite the fact that I can find an AC power cord specified to work with my device, there is NO place on my device to plug it into.surprise  Somebody's fishing for suckers! indecision

Non-complaint:  I just received from Amazon a new pillow speaker to replace my old one.  Yay! smiley   Hmmm... is a "pillow speaker" anything like a "horse whisperer"? surprise

Use Eneloop rechargeables. They have more power (last longer) than normal batteries, keep the charge for several years, and can be recharged up to 2100 times. A lot cheaper in the long run, if you use batteries a lot.
