Ok, long boring saga time! RUN!

Started feeling bad Saturday morning.  By the end of the dy was vomiting, then added the runs overnight.  Spent all day Sunday either on the toilet or throwing up.  Sumday nigh, dizzy and sick, called 911 and taken to the ER.  Into the ER, which was packed - apparently we have a very serious flu epidemic here! Diagnosed initially with flu and dehydration, scheduled for admission but had 120 other people waiting - the hospital was literally full!  Holy carp!!  Took 8 hours to get a room, ffs.

I didn't go into general care, they took me straight into what's call IMC - Immediate Medical Care - which is just short of the ICU.  Blood test showed that my sodium was so low I was just short of critical life-threatening levels.  My muscles had sttarted to stop working and my brain was messing up.  Yesm low sodium will kill you dead - basically your nerves stop working.

On to a 24-hour saline drip.  Within a day my sodium level slowly crept up, and I mean ssslllooowwwlllyyyy.    Doctor came in every single day and I was on 24 hour monitoring.

By Wednesday night my numbers were good, I could use my hands and legs again, and the ol' brain was back to normal.  Discharged Thursday at Noon.

They had also discovered that it wasn't the flu, it was a severe viral gastroenteritis!  It hasd made me lose so much fluid that my body was in the process of shutting down.  Scary, very scary!

Anyway, thankfully no permanent damage.  About a 1-2 week recovery period, though.  No long-term issues.  I owe my guardian angel a lobster and steak dinner.

That is the cloest I've been to Death in my life, and it sucked HARD.

I have a lot to think about now...

Everyone, take damn good care of yourselves.  You do NOT want to end up like me.

    Back to resting, more later.

I’ll have a good thought for you *hugs*

Teletypes?  I remember Teletypes. surprise  I had an ASR-33 and an ASR-35 in my computer lab back in the late '70s.  Also I think we had a KSR-33 (no paper tape) as the console of the Xerox Sigma 5 at my college back in the early '70s.  Also I worked as consultant to Harris Intertype for a while back in the early '80s and they had a few laying around, but we were designing their replacement. (an early word processing/typesetting machine for the newspaper industry).

OMG KSR-33s!!  We had those in our computer science class in high school, then upgraded to paper tape ones be we got HP CRTs.  Wow, brings back memories of loading my Lunar Lander game in HP BASIC off paper tape..

    Damn I'm old...

When I was in high school, computers were sci-fi, except for government things.  There were no classes at all on computers, of any kind.

This was actually a polit project at Oakton High in Vienna VA, that school had a ton of money.  Eventually we ended up getting an HP-3000 at the school!  Those were the days...

If I had had any more crap in me after the runs, I would have crapped my pants!

It turns out I probably got it off raw green from Mexico.  No more raw green for a while, gonna love on canned spinach!

...yikes.  Was wondering why I haven't seen any posts for a while was about to send a PM in the next day or so.

Yeah that is scary, particularly as I am not a big lover of salt, even "low salt" snacks often are still too salty for my taste. When I'm out getting a burger at one of the local pubs, I often have to request no salt on the fries as they always overdo it.  Never acquired the "American" taste for salt and I use it very sparingly in my cooking as well as buy low sodium ingredients.  Oddly, Pringles tend to have less salt than most other brands of crisps and snacks (they even have their one "low salt" version).  Then there's Kettle which has a no salt potato crisp (one of my faves).

As far as I can tell, the issues was losing water, drinking more water, and never re-mineralizing so I quickly  loost sodium and never replaced it.  I normally eat a medium-sodium diet, the doc just said to be real careful when I lose a lot of fluids/

Neing old and diabetic didn't help, with a lowered immue system it's easier to catch bugs like - so everyone older, be careful!!!

But I live to drink another beer!!!

Right now there is a problem with romaine lettuce, I read.  Stay away from that for a little while.  Too bad, I prefer that to iceburg lettuce.

Wow.  At the hospital I only ate 2 solid meals, everything else was doctor-ordered clear fluids.  So far I've had 9 fish sticks with soy sauce, seven pork sausage, a miso soup, a bowl of tortilla chips, and 6oz of garlic salami.  I finally feel full... uurp..

Better than last year's then. Flu shots are always a bit of a gamble, since they have to guess the strain many months in advance in order to set up the production. Your tale of 8 hours in the ER has  resonances here - there have been stories in the press of people stuck in ER Admissions for 20+ hours because the system gets so overloaded at this time of year.

    Back to resting, more later.

I only get sick once every three or four years.  I never get a flu shot.  Others around me that do, seem to get the flu.   frown  I'm not young.  Well, maybe in mind and attitude sometimes, but I graduated high school in 1971.

TThe doctor at the hospital said this years vaccine was only 30% effective.  Apparetly one of the strains mutated.  Never believe we're at the top of the food chain!

It surprised me - Austin has 5 strong hospitals, but every single one got slammed.  Just too many people too sick at the same time. :(

You seem susceptible to GI ailments. Likely due to your immune deficiencies (the diabetes doesn't help, either). I would recommend you keep four or five bottles of full-bore Gatorade and/or Ensure around. Drink those when carp strikes, rather than plain  water; they will both hydrate and add electrolytes. Also, living in the SW has a tendency to dry one out more than back east. People with diabetes have an increased risk of dehydration as high blood glucose levels lead to decreased hydration in the body. Which starts up a very vicious circle. Stay thirsty, my friend.

Sometimes I feel like people are talking bad about me in my own home and other times I know they are.   There is too much favoritism in this house and it seems to be okay to talk bad about me.
