Just more tests on Genevieve who I love. Some people seem to think she has a notch on her nose but I think that's built in the default texture, she looks way better with other textures! Here she is with P3D Morgane, no nose lines and she looks much younger!

I'm pretty sure it's in the face normal map. I've been able to "heal" that, in photshop, for Michael 7 and other G3 figures. The Morgane materials do look really good on Genevieve. Definitely younger.

Testing my new dirt shader with some tweaks. The verdigris and bronze come from Mec4D, but I copied the verdigris settings onto the dirt shader (for my purposes, the actual shader will have my own settings).

Also played with some atmospheric fog and so on; while I like to use postwork for the most part, there is a subtle quality to doing it in-engine that postwork can sometimes fail to capture.

The statue is a freebie obj.

Thanks! I've turned from history to fiction and working on a Magneto scene next... ;)

This is based on the 60s TV show opening credits of Bewitched.

    Improvements:

    a) I'd like to edit the Darren texture and make it paler for Samantha as I think it's more in keeping with the overall style of the scene.

    b) I'd leave Darren's hair shiny as I think he was a greaser on the show, at least Dick York the 1st one was, but I'm not sure how to remove the sheen from Samantha's hair as she definately was not a greaser.

    c) Improve the lighting

    d) Even though it breaks with the color scheme of the original cartoon credits, I'd change the color of the wall & floor from shades of pink.

I love these retro TV renders!

    Ugh.

So after searching in vain for a bunch of stuff in Iray MDL, I threw my hands up. I want to do something like Stonemason's Dirt shader for Iray, but each method I attempt is blocked by lack of code (or documentation)

HOWEVER, one of my free shaders, WTP Base ColorBump Normals, with filtering by Normals in all three dimensions, can look about right.

The top image is the normal Crawler render, the bottom adds an Iray decal with a tweaked shader (which I will include as a preset with next WTP release)

Are you looking for documentation on authoring MDL, or getting custom MDL into DS?

You have probably already seen this, but if not (and for others):

    http://www.mdlhandbook.com/

As far as getting custom MDL into DAZ, Esemwy was very helpful and generous (as usual):

    http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/59018/playing-around-with-iray-mdl

In general, I think it's important to consider that you are not really authoring shaders with MDL, but rather authoring (defining) materials. It may sound semantic, but it's really not. It's a different approach than what your probably used to doing in Shader Mixer writing shaders for use in 3DL.

    Hope this helps.

Just trying to make materials that do things materials don't current do. ;)

It's ok, it's become more of a WIP thread than an IRAY showcase one, but that is an outstanding render, great job!

Thats kinda creepy..  but really well done.

  • Thank you FSMCDesigns, DarwinMishap(s), kyoto kid and Mattymanx.

@DarwinMishap(s) - his eyes are actually from your Toruun, since those eyes are like the coolest eyes one can use for a dark fantasy character. ;)

Very dark, but captivating. Love how realistic the textures look here and the lighting is very well done. And yeah, the red eyes looks very creepy. No wonder she's chained up...

  • Aw, thank you Chanteur-de-Vent!  I agree that bluejaunte's is fantastically well lit and composed.  Well done.

Retro spacesuit, http://www.daz3d.com/iray-skydome-super-pak , and I applied my new lava shader on to Ocean Wild (of all things).

Also put a fog volume cylinder. While postwork is easier, there are some cool elements to doing it in-render, if your machine can handle it.

The Polish thread got me thinking.

Here's a render with absolutely no image texture maps at all.

This wasn't intended as a general experiment, but converting Moonshines diner to Iray made it run DOG SLOW, at least in part from all the surface textures.

Ended up converting almost every surface to mapless textures. I'm particularly proud of the table top -- it uses a low density metallic flake to give it a texture similar to diner furnishings I've seen. I think it's a kind of Formica?

Also ended up deleting almost everything out of shot, which had the other benefit of making lighting simpler/faster (I just set up Painter's Lights to get the effect I wanted rather than trying to get some natural fall of light through a building.)

The man's skin comes from Skin Builder run through NGS Anagenessis.

Sculptural UV map for Genesis is fun for doing weird stuff, like... GLASS BRICK MAN!

(surface is a shader I'm working on. Procedural tiles)

  • Okay, here's another one. I've been sort of sitting on this one, as it was originally put together on my older laptop that didn't do Iray very well. I redid the girl's morph (and will be redoing it correctly, yet again) as I didn't copy everything from the old laptop to the new one when I did the render. Stonemason's Cryoenvironment and Cryotube with Iray textures and some light tweaks.

    Totally Iray, 0 postwork.

I sort of tripped over a good way to do outlines... details in my freebies thread, along with the shader.

And literally my latest Iray render (just finished it a few minutes ago) using my new MSI Apache Pro laptop with an nVidia GeForce GTX 1060 video card.

    VERY NICE!
