The restoration is complete and the starship Enterprise filming miniature has been returned to the Air and Space Museum of the Smithsonian for major display.  The garish "Aztec" paneling of the 1990s was stripped and the repainted to match the grey-green hues as it appeared in the 1960s.  Even the iconic "warp drive" effect within the domes has been recreated, now using "cool" LEDs rather than hot incandescent holiday bulbs (those vintage ones about the size of small pecans).  They debated if they could simulate the rotating vanes using a totally digital method without moving parts, but ultimately decided it could only be done as with the original system, a motor spinning a translucent inner done with opaque vanes painted upon its surface.

I had read they would only light it on "special occasions" so as to minimize wear and tear.  I took this to mean occasions like major holidays.  Thankfully, fans can rest easy.  The miniature will be illuminated for 10 minutes three time a day, around 11 AM, again at 1 PM and a final session at 3 or 4 PM.  A pretty reasonable compromise I must say.

Finally, it's been restored to look like what it is, a filming miniature, rather than a fictional spaceship.  This means if you look at the port side of the model, you will clearly see the power cables that were affixed to the outer surface of the secondary hull and strung the length of the nacelle pylon strut.  Though no longer mounted, the rod and pyramid frame that supported the model for filming is also housed within the case.

Near perfect timing as this September 8 will mark the 50th anniversary since the first national broadcast.

Oh, please forgive my drooling.  ;-)

    Sincerely,

    Bill

I really like the restoration. It looks great. Hope I can see it in person one day.

I saw the original model in the Smithsonian when I was a teenager, back in the 70's, I think. It was hanging from the ceiling at the time. This is a huge improvement! Maybe it's time to go back.

  • RedfernRedfern Posts: 1,647

As constructed, the miniature was meant to be supported from underneath, the secondary taking the load.  So, suspending it from the ceiling, put stresses upon the engine pylons and the connecting dorsal it was not meant to experience.  Thankfully, it never collapsed upon itself and any long term damage it may have suffered has been corrected by the latest restoration team.

    Sincerely,

    Bill

I'm building the AMT model of the Enterprise bridge, and really don't like the chairs, and even the 'upgrade' resin kits don't have ones that are anywhere close, so I took my free Poser chair and had it printed by Shapeways in 1:32 scale ... PERFECT!

Now I just need to print 6 morelaugh, and paint them ...

I wonder how much it would be to scale them up for the Barbie 50th anniversary Uhura, Spock and Kirk? I received my Spock, Uhura is on backorder. Kirk is coming.

If you go to Shapeways and search for "TOS chair," there are several from the same store that cover a range of scales, from 1:9 to 1:24; those are more canon than mine. Barbie is something like 1:6 - you might be able to contact the seller and see if you can get them in that scale.

Did I read correctly that the unveiling event yesterday included a screening of that most "Star Trek" of movies, "Galaxy Quest?" That would actually be a very clever thing to do - a movie about actors on a TV show, for the unveiling of a prop from a TV show.

I honestly don't know.  But, yes, such a presentation would have been very tongue in cheek, yet endearing acknowledgement.

The official 40th anniversary celebration on July 1 will include a film festival; "Galaxy Quest" is scheduled as the midnight movie, and will include live-tweeted commentary from Mike and Denise Okuda. cool

Well I tidied up some mesh issues with the bridge dome and ended up creating a few new ones. I did get the turbolift alcove cut out the way I wanted to though and threw in some Phase II style chairs (they were in the Phase II plans) that are just placeholders for the good chairs.  I'm thinking the hoods on the wall parts of the consoles are too thick and may need to be thinned out a bit. The yellow parts in there will be lights lit with iRay. Yes, that is the emergency hatch you see open in front of the helm and yes, there will be a ladder down to deck 2 and a small portion of deck 2 kind of like a Jefferies Tube.  I did end up cutting into the dome and colored the exterior shell darker so you can see where it's cut up. When I load it up they'll be the same color so it's more subtle, but as it is you have 12 pie pieces that you can rearrange, including the viewscreen. I'm option not to do the Tactical Station with the hood as it always sticks out to me. Does the Tactical person really need to see the main viewscreen at all times when they've got perfectly good targetting displays in front of them? No.  Anyway, want to rearrange and slap the turbolifts to the sides of the bridge? You can do that. When I'm done it should load up just like the classic bridge ptrope has out there where you can basically drag the consoles and pie pieces wherever you want. You should be able to load it up with some missing like they did to make the Grissom bridge in Star Trek III as well. I may do up a few oddball wall pieces like Reliant had as well to add some variety. Haven't got that far yet. I'm probably going to model the chairs next before I do too much with the wall monitors and consoles though and fix up the railings a bit. The ceiling is definitely going to be last.

I wasn't originally just because I think it sticks out like a sore thumb in an otherwise great bridge design, I'm thinking I should at least attempt to build it for the experience and to have it as an option.

Since you're going to build the bridge in sections, you can make it as an alternate section. Then folks can use it if they want to.

Very true. I need to make up some of the weird mission consoles the Reliant bridge had as well.

I was thinking about fleshing them out a bit to use in other sets or have as an option for the bridge. ;)  The'll look just a little better.

I'm going to jump off track for a moment. Anyone know where I can find a basic full-length bedroom-type robe for V4? I wouldn't mind if it's a little sheer but I don't want overerly sexual.

Wish I could help you out but I do not.

  • While I was playing around with Greywolf's Connie, I came up with an idea. What if a ship from the Kelvin Timeline (A.K.A. the JJ-Verse) clashed with it's counterpart from the Prime Mirror Universe? So I kitbashed some of the Starkiller connie parts and Ptrope's awesome crossbow to make the mirror version and used one of MadMan's armada ships for the other.

If you have it, why not try to re-texture the V4 Morphing Fantasy Dress, and either use a transparency map or slightly adjust the Alpha value to make it vaguely see-through to give it the illusion of being sheer? If you want it to look open in the front, a trans map can give that effect if done right.

Sat down after screwing around with Sickbay yesterday and finally exported the Junior Officer's Quarters out into Daz. I'm rendering a few test shots now to make sure I got the lighting and everything else right before I work on modeling or exporting anything else. Sickbay is mostly laid out, just the detailing to go among other things. I posted a pick of the completed sets I've got so far in Daz (briefing room, transporter room, junior officer's quarters, 140 ft. of corridor) as kind of an in progress shot of the layout I'd posted before.

So while I was deciding what to work on, I figured I'd actually export the Junior Officer's Quarters into DAZ and get it situated along the corridor sets and run a few test renders. Obviously this would have different set dressings to be different quarters for people and even different lighting depending on the individual. The first render is looking from the bathroom towards the wall that has the dresser and mirror with the bed off to the side (courtesy of mdbruffy). The second is looking from the bed towards the main entry (bed and chair courtesy of mdbruffy and ptrope). I've since lowered the ceiling and some parts of the walls as well as the bed from the first two renders as I thought it was too high, but also just didn't feel right with a ten ft ceiling. Way too much head space I think so I lowered it to 8 ft. The last render is looking from the main entry towards the bed (courtesy of mdbruffy). This one shows the actual ceiling height and lowered bed and wall sections that I'm keeping for the room.

That's the fun part. You have to "shop around" and think like your character so the stuff in the cabin fits with that person. That was the hardest part about outfitting the Command Suite in "Nova Trek" was finding or making stuff that would reflect Jan and Spock's tastes.

That's the fun part. You have to "shop around" and think like your character so the stuff in the cabin fits with that person. That was the hardest part about outfitting the Command Suite in "Nova Trek" was finding or making stuff that would reflect Jan and Spock's tastes.

Thanks! Now I have to figure out decorations for everyone. LOL

When I do that I'm definitely saving out each version as a seperate characters quarters cause there's no way I'm re-dressing them like they did for the series. lol
