That last render was 28 hours or so and only 60% done. I added one more item and instanced it setting the emissive shader on as is the rest of the lighting. I used render settings I made up and have been testing and this is 2 hours and 45 mins in at 80%. Not as good as the other one but usable. I have left it running to see what 100% gives.

Another test render from new shader working on. Finally got Displacement mostly worked out...

I'm not sure it looks completely like land, but hey.

Poking at some presets for bone, but here's an attempt at ocean with new shader...

It uses displacement effect, though I think it's overkill for ocean effects.

The troll's skin and the cave surface are my new shader. Smoke added in post.

Yeah, but renders slow and very persnickety. ;)

Probably way easier to use deformers and/or Ocean Wide and then the noise shader only doing bump.

Ivy: Thanks! There's procedurally generated bump and translucency, and then a glowing surface underneath that 'bleeds' through where the transparency value is highest. A little processing intensive; I found the Base resolution worked fine.

Also, the cavern is that freebie that lacks a fixed UV map, which, again, is a place where procedural shaders stand out.

Will, the cave troll and cave surface shaders look very cool, the troll shader has a great sense of organic, thick crusty bits that really pops.  You can probably even make the orange bits emissive, too, right?  That'd really be... hot!

I've been so inspired by all the interesting posts in the "Show me your Iray" & "Michael & Friends" forums...so here's my most recent effort. It's a nightime, full moon scene, so you really need to click through to the actual post in gallery and make sure to expand it to full size in order to be able to really see it well.   I wrote about the various products I used and other notes on the gallery page in case anyone has questions about items in the scene etc.

Moar portraits! but oh, I do love them.

Surprisingly little postwork 89% just custom tonemapping in photoshop.

I am still in love with getting that bit of under chin glow. Don't know why, bit its just one of those things that pleases me. Its a staple of baroque painting (which also was my influence for the lady's chin shape, I spent some time getting that chin properly round and dimpled.)

and to show how little postwork there really is attached is the unpostworked version (well other than my monogram)

Looks like a lady I worked with at an earlier employer.

If you look at the shadows, they already are emissive... well, actually, they are translucent and there's emission underneath showing through.

Those are very nice looking boots.  I love how you did the laces, too!

edit to add: Took a quick look at your store.  Is there a morph or version of the boot with the laces done all the way up, too? Just curious as that would be a cool add-on.  I love the extra mats in the add-on.  I put them in my wishlist for now, but thinking I'll definitely be getting these while they are on sale.  I have the perfect use for them in mind!

That's okay. I just thought it wouldn't hurt to ask.  I love the idea of being able to show a fully laced boot on one figure and the same boot as shown in your promo on another.  However, I'll take what I can get and those are the best millitary boot I've seen to date!

  • This is my first iray render. I also started playing around with the emissive for the sphere primitive. I'd like to include something to put 'mist' right around it, or otherwise break up the obviously featureless sphere texture.

Try the bloom filter in render settings. Increase threshold to about 8000-10000 and maybe reduce the two other settings if you need it.
