Just discovered 3D modeling this week, and DAZ, and I'm finding it's pretty fun.  I've dabbled in photography for years, and it almost seems like now have a studio in my PC to experiment with.

I played around with Blender and made some softboxes and strip lights with and without grids, and a sort of infinity cove, and the effect is virtually identical to real world.

Here are a few of my first renders.

Very nice work.  I like the composition on the render of the woman on the balcony.

Brand new to DS, this is my first full scene that came out half way decent and my first experiment using the sun. I picked various times of day until I found one I liked... I actually added back the grain in Photoshop because I liked a grittier feel for the image and the smoke is from Photoshop too and a cooler tone adjustment. I like the way the metal shaders I used on the car reflect the street.

Wonderland: I really like the lighting and composition, good job!

Hi Wonderland, nice image! I really like the composition, the way the vertical lines of bus stop sign post,  roof supports, his suspenders, vertical ribbing of his wife-beater,  even the tucks in seat back visible in car echo each other while the lines of the curb, street's painted lines and the chrome trim on car side make echoing lines at a cross angle.  Combined with the poses and the framing, gives a nice sense of movement....

Barbult mentioned Touch of Dirt's ability to make camo and other stuff, which inspired me to see if I could do that with the shader I'm working on...

Great work on the horses Will. Impressive that your shaders can do that!

Here's a render I was playing with, working on getting better at lighting. Still leargning.

To clean things up a little bit, turn the Render SubD up to 2 or 3 (which ever one you can go to) on your character. That way, you'll notice smoother edges on the shadows. And that's my little nitpick, because I really, really like that image!

Thanks, I was really pleased with the result. Full disclaimer: the lighting is Khory's "Scintillant Portrait Lights for Iray". It's light 1, render setting 1. I'm happy to do my own lighting, but thought I would start with Khory's set and modify. Turns out I didn't need to modify the lights.

For grinch's render, I'm not so sure subD is the issue. Looks more like compression artifacts or posterization to me.

It looks like the shadow terminator problem to me...

I usually rid myself of those shadow issues by upping the SubD, but if there's an easier solution, that's even better!

Thanks all for the feedback. I used the render studio product and it's awesome. So this was mostly an experiment in using that but I really liked the result so I shared.

Regarding your comments, I assume you are honing in on the jaggy edges in the shadows on the knee?  If so, the legs were a particularly difficult part to get looking as I wanted in this render.  You see, G3F is wearing stockings and I fiddled around for a while trying to get them to look like hose using transluscence colors to emulate something more like real hosiery. I mostly failed to achieve what I wanted and drove render times up (hence the artifacts on her arm, for example) and left weird shadows on the legs. Some of the earlier incarnations had weird blotches on the calves as well, cleared that up after lots of experiments and finally noticing the model came with a bump map set to 2.0 strength and I set that back (looking at the article mjc1016 linked, that seems to correlate with the shadow terminator issue).  But still the knee in particular remains "off".

Looking at the last comment in that article it says "Fortunately, the workaround is pretty simple: If you experience shadow terminator artifacts on a mesh, simply increase the triangulation, or in the case of bump/normal maps: use displacement maps instead".  So increasing triangulation would be using higher level of SubD I think.  So seems like both mjc1016 and Visuimag are right about the cause and fix, respectively.  I may render this again after cranking subD and if that doesnt work, maybe I'll just do it without the stockings.

By the way, a decent shader for nylon hosiery is really needed. So many "cotton" and "velvet" ones but nothing that captures hosiery. Even the various lingerie products with stockings don't have very good Iray shader presets for the stockings. Is it really that hard?

You could give this one a try..it's a freebie over on ShareCG.

Man. I am working on a realistic 3DL image and it's taking SO long to render with bounce light that I'm seriously considering redoing it as Iray.

What is the fastest lighting setup for iray? Out of curiousity.

Moar portraits! but oh, I do love them.

Surprisingly little postwork 89% just custom tonemapping in photoshop.

I am still in love with getting that bit of under chin glow. Don't know why, bit its just one of those things that pleases me. Its a staple of baroque painting (which also was my influence for the lady's chin shape, I spent some time getting that chin properly round and dimpled.)

and to show how little postwork there really is attached is the unpostworked version (well other than my monogram)

I'm going through a Mad Men binge watching period (never watched it first time around) so I decided to do a simple 60s era render. Complicating it is the fact that clothes from that era are not in abundance so I had to make the dresses. I leftit a tad grainy to make it feel more like it was of the era, tweaked the colors in paint.net.

    @grinch2901 "Mad Men binge "

Great composition. The dresses are very well done. It's a really nice render.

Thanks, fastbike1!  I actually made three dresses so added the third figure just because.

Thank You very much :)  this is for a fantasy story that comes in PDF# sold on one of them unmentionabe adult sites..lol

My web sites been kind of in limbo the last couple of weeks. I had to upload some licensing stuff for my animations on youtube & I got a lot of new pages with some new art on my site I just have not uploaded them yet, everything still sitting in the testing server.. I've been slowly converting my pages that had Adobe flash to display my Art galleries to  HTML5 & Jquery so its taken some time to test them doing it by myself .
