Yeah the export and import seams to work fine, but it just doesn't fit onto the figure. :)
Yeahhhh I forgot about that step. Normally you'd manually adjust it in a modelling program to make it fit the figure - not sure what others are doing.
Yes you are right about that. It significantly lowers the chances that I het more than one.
.
But seen from a customer's point of view I'd say it's good. Say they launch one package today and you think they're good, so you buy them. Then tomorrow comes a new package you like better, so you regret your first purchase. You can return the first one of course, but that just creates more work for customer service.
I agree the artists may not like it, but I'd put the blame on the concept in today's business world called "competition". No matter how you look at it, artists do compete with each other one way or another under the current conditions.
That's a good point; we have plenty of examples of nice deals that immediately get replaced with better deals a day after which is basically the same thing. I guess you can't really win.
I actually find that I don't need to import using the transfer utility :) I'll try to upload a document to here and elsewhere something by the end of this week; I have a bunch of marking coming up so I want to get that out of the way first.
edit: As a side note, are we ever going to get some of the rarer PAs on sale? I haven't seen Billy-T or Uzilite yet.
PAs that do not release any new items during the PA sale will only go on sale during the handful (1-2) of days when all PAs are on sale. These sometimes occur at the center of the sale, and again at the end, but nothing is guaranteed. I believe Billy-T has not released anything new (at this store) for many years, so is likely to be one of the PAs that are only on sale during the everything on sale period.
Akio 3 seems like she should be cheaper. I've got a bunch of freebie stuff for A3, all categorized, that I downloaded before I understood the different characters and generations. I don't know that I'll ever use Akio 3, but I convinced myself to use the PC coupon to get it down to a buck and change.
Then, after I completed my purchase, I saw the Pool Deck free with purchase thread... *sigh*... You've got to get everything lined up just right with DAZ purchases before you pull the trigger.
I don't see the pool deck you are talking about, but if it is free with purchase and you made the purchase on the same day as you saw it, I bet you can ask for it to be added to your account via a ticket.
Was this added with the new PC items?
If you are in the Platinum Club (which, given that you mentioned using the coupon, you should be) you don't need a purchase to get the Pool Deck free. The weekly freebies (without purchase) are one of the perks.
Edit: Kerya, is there a way to have the pillows not deflate without having the complete Dynamic Control plugin? I remember when I finally got to try the product and I was sorely disappointed, it seemed like it was completely useless without something that wasn't listed as a requirement.
So weird. I see this mentioned in the newsletter, but it isn't showing up for me under the recent listings. Is this normal for the weekly freebie? If so, is there a way to find it without having to remember to look at Tuesday's email? I don't generally read them top to bottom.
So, I'm woefully behind on getting my content better organized, partly because I didn't know how I wanted it categorized early on, and more recently because with the amount of content I now have, I didn't want to screw things up by doing it incorrectly and breaking something.
I've taken the approach you described and set up a folder hierarchy that works for me, but before I go all gangbusters on my content I'd like to ask a few clarifying questions, if I may:
Does categorizing my content the way you describe actually move it on disk, or does this method just change file paths/pointers?
Most content has more than one file associated with it (geometry, textures, lights, cameras, materials, etc.). Does moving a single file create a problem? Ideally, I think I'd prefer to recategorize my content based on product so everything "stays together", but then if I want something dual-categorized, what happens then? I know how to put a single item into multiple categories, but does doing that break the paradigm of categorizing the product as a whole?
Can I back up my custom categories (if so, how)?
Can I port my custom categories to my different computers so I don't have to recreate them? If so, does it matter if the different computers are running different operating systems (Win7 and Mac OS X)?
Hmmm I might be too much of a newbie to answer these - but I'll answer to the best of my ability. If anyone else has any better or more accurate information, please feel free to jump in. :) I feel weird giving advice when I'm so new to Daz - but I'll do my best!
"Does categorizing my content the way you describe actually move it on disk"
I'm pretty sure it doesn't change where the files are (I've checked several of the ones I have categorized and it seams to keep them in the same place in the files), it only gives you another place to find them in your library (pretty much just copies the icon and puts the copy in a place you find more helpful - like creating a shortcut, I believe).
"Does moving a single file create a problem?"
Categorizing a single file/icon doesn't create any issues - at least it never has for me, and I've categorized nearly all of my content - purchased and freebies.
"if I want something dual-categorized, what happens then?"
Nothing, you just have an additional place to find it. For instance, I have a product file that contains both weapons and poses, that file I've categorized in both my "props >> weapons" category as well as my "poses >> G3F poses" category.
"Can I back up my custom categories (if so, how)?"
I'm not sure but I THINK that backing up your User Data will save your custom categories (again, I'm not positive as I've not tested it).
"Can I port my custom categories to my different computers so I don't have to recreate them?"
I don't know, I'm too much of a newbie to know the answer. I'm sorry. :) I've only been working with Daz Studio for about 5-6 months so I still have a lot to learn. :)
I had this problem too - had to use the newsletter to get the item. Normally they show up in new products, so I assume this one is just bugged.
I am interested in your secrets.
On the topic of Aiko 3, she was offered at something crazy like 95% off during uhhh maybe it was last year's PC+ sale, so seeing her bundle at 75% now is sort of sad.
If you click on the Platinum Club banner on the front page then click on "weekly freebies" it will take you to the PC+ free items. :) http://www.daz3d.com/platinum-club-freebies
Maybe also interesting in this context:
Here a tutorial how to creat new Metadata for stuff bought elwhere / freebies etc. I created some time ago:
http://www.3d-almanac.com/index.php/2016/02/16/tutorial-metadata-101-create-smart-content-metadata-for-3rd-party-content-in-daz-studio/
PDS, I spent the last couple of days following Diva's advice for creating custom organization, and it is AWESOME.
It doesn't move anything on the drive, it just creates database pointers that allow you to organize and group content in ways that make sense to you. You can create whatever heiarchy you prefer... and you can put content in multiple different places (say, a hair item that works for V4, G2F, A4, G4, etc... you can add the hair item to a hair folder under each one of those categories, with the mats and accessories under the hair).
It is a pain to organize this way... very tedious and manual... but once you get it organized, the payoff is HUGE.
Diva pointed me toward how to make a backup of user data. I do not see how to IMPORT it though. I've asked the thread administrator in that thread for details on how to export your organized user data and re import it back in, but haven't heard a response.
It just sets pointers in the database, it doesn't move any files.
No problem, since the actual files aren't moved. You can dual-categorize -- for example, if an outfit includes weapons I categorize it as part of the outfit and also in my weapons category. Each item belongs to a Product, but a Product doesn't have to be all in the same category.
Yes, from the options menu in the Content Library pane, "Content DB Maintenance > Export User Data"
You can port them, regardless of OS, just use "Content DB Maintenance > Re-Import Metadata". Your User Data shows up at the top of the list of metadata you can import (it's saved in a plain-text file in the Runtime:Support folder of your first DS-format content folder, just like the metadata that comes in a product zip). It even works if your content folder is in a different drive or path, as the plain-text files you get by Exporting User Data has relative paths.
The weekly freebie now shows up in the store, and more items have been added to the Mega Fast Grab.
They had Perry Walinga at the begining, and he's pretty obscure. Course the item I want starts at 50 bucks, so at 80% off I might be willing to buy it. But the sale on it hasn't been that good yet.
I still can't place this: http://www.daz3d.com/dreamlight What sale is this part of?
Was added to the Mega Fastgrab
Yep, thanks, it was added to it a bit later. Today's mega fastgrab is really fast-changing, we need to keep an eye on it. :)

It's the last entry. (The link won't work for non-members. Sorry.)
I'm getting burned out and bored with this sale, it's going on too long. I feel sorry for the later PAs... I don't have the attention span for a full month of sales or the money... I think they should limit these sales to 5-10 days and maybe do them more often. It was fun at first looking at all the new items for sale, now it's just giving me a headache...
Thank you for taking the time to respond to my questions! I suspected some of these answers would be the case, but I thought it would be better to verify before blindly stumbling ahead and screwing things up, lol. I've only been at this a few months longer than you and am impressed by how rapidly you have assimiliated so many subtleties of working in Daz. won't be long before I could see you becoming a PA. :-)
Thanks, Renomista, I had seen that thread, but it seems like even more work than just recategorizing, and if I can wade through all of my personal categorizations, I don't think I'll have much use for Smart Content, though I could be wrong. When it works, I rather like it; unfortunately, I have a lot of content not yet supported by it and so it can also be frustrating experience.
Thanks! I would love to know what you find out, or if you don't mind pointing me to the thread, I'll keep tabs on it too!
thought as much...it seemed quite responsive when I was experimenting with it.
But if I want to keep everything neatly together, I'm guessing I should recategorize the whole product folder. For example, with a G3F character, if I just recategorize the "actor" rather than the whole product, I'm guessing that would leave her materials in the default category, which would mean hunting them down again. In your example of an outfit that includes weapons, when you add the weapons to both your outfit category and your weapons category, do you categorize the prop itself along with its mats in both places? Or put another way, I'm guessing you could recategorize the whole product to your outfits category and then additionally categorize the weapons prop (and associated mats?) to your weapons category?
Sorry, just trying to be sure I understand how this all works.
Excellent! Seems like a good idea, if only to have a backup after all the work goes into categorizing everything.
Awesome. I definitely need to do this as I work across several machines depending on where I am.
Thank you very much for the info!
