The problem with the gift card sale is that if you buy 2 new items and want discounts on other PA items or Mega Fastgrab, you have to have it all in the same cart. So you can't use the gift card today at all unless you plan to purchase 4 new items. And the PA items still seem too expensive even with the discount... A part of me just wants to say "I'm done." I have enough content for like 50 figures to last a lifetime... I end up spending a lot more time looking at content for sale and IMAGINING what I can do with it than actually doing it and then I don't even remember what I bought and unless it shows up in smart content (which it often doesn't) it could be lost for years until I go into the store and uncheck "hide products I own" (or whatever the actual wording is) and then I think "OMG! What am I doing? I already have so much stuff I never used or didn't even know I have!" If I made a rule that I would not buy any new content until I used everything I already own from all stores, the next time I'd be on this site I would probably be in an old age home or possibly the afterlife LOL...

If you have the money, the sales are great, but if you don't, it just tempts you to spend money you shouldn't. With a shopping cart full of things I can't afford, I'm at a crossroads of two popular  slogans "Just say no" and "Just do it." But if I "just do it" I might not be able to pay rent... So, I think today will unfortunately be a "move everything to wishlist" day...  And as I've learned by now, there's always another sale....

I'm fairly new but I see this same type of comment by quite often here. I'm really glad I'm seeing this so much, actually. This will, hopefully, keep me from going to that point where I have a ton of stuff that I've never even used. After seeing so many poeple say that they forget about what they have, can't find what they have, or haven't used what they have purchased, it's changed my purchasing and rendering habbits. What I do is, as soon as I get a new item (even if it's in a bundle and I wasn't planning on using it), is to put it in my custom categories for easy finding and to do a render or two with it right away (and I won't let myself buy anything else until I do). I can set up a scene fairly quickly with several new items in the scene and then do a couple of renders with it. And also placing every new item in my own custom categories (G1 figures, G2 figures, environments, v4 clothes, weapons, poses, etc) helps me to keep everything organized so that I don't have stuff I've bought that I can't find and forget about. This helps me to remember what all I've gotten and will hopefully keep me from forgetting about what I've gotten. This also helps me slow down on my spending as it helps me to realize exactly how much I've accumulated.

I'm not new to the Daz store, but I'm new to DS software because I was using Poser exclusively until March when I saw what Iray could do and forced myself to try to learn DS which has been a challenge LOL, but a fun one. I had moved away from the Daz store to other stores when they introduced Genesis because it was not Poser compatible and they stopped creating new V4 content, so there was a big Daz store break in between and I'm now catching up with older Genesis content. You are actually way ahead of me because I don't know how to do categories... I hand organize my Poser runtimes, even organizing by style (i.e.: sci-fi, fantasy, steampunk, fairy, modern, lingerie, swimsuit)  and I have a lot of stuff from other stores too, but I have no idea how to do it in DS without screwing everything up...

How do you create catagories in DS? If things aren't in my smart content, I have to look up what I want in the store and then find it alphabetically in the content directory because search never seems to work correctly or takes a ridiculous amount of time... It would be great to create categories for everything!  Can you do subfolders like clothes/female/sci-fi?

BTW, when I first started buying content, I was like you, rendered everything right away and was very frugal. Then buying content became like a drug, spending money I couldn't afford and in my head I imagined what I would create with each item but rarely got a chance to do what I had imagined because I had moved on to other newer content and sometimes just forced myself to randomly kit bash just so I could use things because the content started to get out of control...  Just wait a few years. My first purchase from Daz was in 2004! I was 10 years old, haha, no, god, that just makes me feel ancient though. I've never been addicted to any substance or bad habit in my life except this! Not that this is a bad habit LOL, it's actually officially my career now, not just a hobby, so I rationalize that I may need something in the future for a project and it's on super sale now, I better get it now...

Under "Categories" you can right click it and tell it to "Create a Sub-Category". There I created a "Favorites" category (with sub categories under that) because when I first started organizing into categories I was only going to do my favorite items/content. But then I started categorizing everything and let me tell you, it's been a MASSIVE help. Don't get me wrong, that takes a lot of time to get your stuff organized that way, but it really pays off in helping you know EXACTLY what you have and helping you set up scenes way faster. Here are my categories:

Under those categories are additional categories to farther organize. Like under clothes I have sub categories for "G1 Clothes", "G2F Clothes", "G2M Clothes", "V4 Clothes", etc. Under Actors I have sub categories for "G1 Actors", "G2 Actors", "G3 Actors", "V4 Actors", "Non-Daz Characters", etc. You can organize however is most helpful to you. Like under "Backgrounds and Props" you could do "Interior Environments", "Exterior Environments" - or organize it by genre like "Fantasy Environments", "Modern Environments", "Fantasy Furniture and Props", "Modern Furniture and Props". However you find is most helpful for you to find what you need for your art.

After creating your categories comes the FUN PART - going through your "My Library" and "Poser Formats" and all your folders and seeing what all you have and organizing it into your categories. :) To organize single items you can right click the item's icon and choose "Categorize" and put a check mark by the folder or sub-folder that you want to put it in. To categorize an entire folder's content just right click the folder and choose "Create a Category from >> Selected Folder & Sub-Folders".

Getting everything into your own categories can be quite time consuming (took me like two months lol) but it also gives you a chance to see everything you have and in the future saves you a TON of time when setting up your scenes and knowing exactly what you have to work with. :) I think you might actually find it fun as you will undoubtedly find things you forgot you had! :)

That looks great thanks! It's somewhat how I have my old Poser runtime set up, but now I have two Poser runtimes. My original one that has a combination of several stores' content and a Daz only one. It would be great to categorize and combine all of them, but that would take forever... I just wish smart content worked better, it's so messed up. I have a G3 character Brooke which is completely separate from all the other characters and a whole bunch of stuff in lost and found, and things in utilities that aren't utilities and half the time shaders disappear completely until you click on something else, I have to almost trick it to stay visible. If they fixed smart content and updated it to get all older products and RDNA stuff in, that would be great. And I'm thinking there must be a way to make un-smart content smart myself, but I have no idea how to do it...

Also, I'm wondering what people have against connect? This seems to be a touchy subject but I'm not sure what the real problem is...  I sign in each time to refresh my smart content hoping that it will magically be fixed... Unfortunately not yet.

You're highlighting one of the big problems with Connect yourself there - signing in hoping that your smart content will be magically fixed. You have to hope that Daz decides to organise things the way you want for you, since you can't touch their new organisation system. For many users this may be fine, but many others want the ability to organise and easily find their own files. Others don't want Studio to try to be a downloader as well as an art program. etc.

Beefing up DIM and the Category system instead of installing all these new "smart" panels and install panels and Connect systems would have been a much more efficient and manageable way to get the same new enhancements without adding an entirely new confusing system with limitations that restrict power users and block out other stores.Personally I now think that starting on Smart Content actually hindered me learning about different filetypes (and different shader types etc.) because it just lumped things together however it want rather than teaching that different parts are meant to go with specific things. Now that I do know what I'm doing I make my own categories as others have said.

A tip if you find it overwhelming to start on Categories: Start by simply making a new Category section from your root library (for example, right clicking 'my library' and categorise folders and subfolders.) It'll take a few minutes to do the whole thing, but then you'll have a copy of your existing library but as freely moveable categories. That way everything will be a category but also in the same place as it was, so you can take your time organising bits and pieces as you feel like it, rather than worry about what you have or haven't added in yet. There are of course many other ways to do it but that's one.

The categories in Samrt Content are the same as those in the category list, and yes users can add their own and/or remove the existing categories - it's often advised that the new categories not be in the top-level default folder, however. Smart Content and categorisation can be configured by dragging from the Content Library into Samrt Content with the desired base item loaded and selected.

    This is tempting...

$17 for the sweet home bundle is a decent deal; I could do without the other two 'freebies' -they would be useless to me. Oh and I own the home bundle already. Another day with not much to tempt me, and a promo wanting me to buy stuff I have no interest in.

I thought today's sale was okay - the sweet home bundle is good value if you don't have it and Stonemason's After the War envrionment looks great. The rest don't seem to offer much in the way of a "saving" though.

I'm pretty sure I won't buy much now unless it substantially changes what I can already do (like Star 2.0, or a mythical Cat & Dog 7.) Dissatisfaction with the current hair and clothing technologies in DS drove me into making my own content, and every time I'm tempted to buy something from the Daz store, I remind myself how painful the cloth simulator in Blender continues to be and that every time I save money here I'm that much closer to affording a Marvelous Designer 6 perpetual licence.

Richard, is there a way to completely reset the Metadata for an item without resetting the entire database? I'm pretty sure the Metadata for one of my items is compleeeeetely broken beyond imagination and refuses to show up in Smart Content... crying

I do the same thing, only with product images of everything that I have. That way I can click on a thumbnail and see the full-sized promo image. I have a folder on my desktop with many, many subfolders. It's kind of fun to browse the folders and see everything I have, what it looks like, and what usable props it may contain.

Some images go into more than one folder, such as a scene that has usable trees and rocks will go into the "Environments", "Trees" and "Rocks" folders. Things that can be used on other figures go in more than one folder, as well. Like "Wildcat Hair for V4" goes in V4 and G1 hair folders. Downloading all 3000+ promo images was a pain, but well worth it. Since I download and install manually, saving the images at the same time is a breeze now.

Because some people never, under any circumstances, let their art/work computers go on line, ever?

  • $17 for the sweet home bundle is a decent deal; I could do without the other two 'freebies' -they would be useless to me. Oh and I own the home bundle already. Another day with not much to tempt me, and a promo wanting me to buy stuff I have no interest in.

Admittedly, this is the first thing in the current sale I've actually been a little interested in. If the two new releases were at ~$5 each with the Sweet Home Bundle as a freebie, I'd pull the trigger.  $10 is too good to pass up, $20... even with the discounts, is more than I'd like to pay for this content.

  • Diva, Question for you...

In the categories you've created under Favorites, why do clothes, hair, shaders and shoes have an exclamation in front of them?

So that they'll show up first in the list.

You know when you ask something, and someone points out the obvious answer, and you feel kind of stupid when you see it was right in front of your nose the whole time?

;) On that note, I'm gonna go to bed.

That new wetsuit seems to be in the Mega Fastgrab, but I can't really tell what else is in there because both the 'rememberence' banner and the actual sale page links are wrong so there's no way to see what's actually in today's mega fastgrab.

Wow, some of the sets today are amazing. I think half the time I purchase something because I actually want to move in, rather than render it LOL.

I'm surprised... there's actually *nothing* that I want from that fast grab. I think I may have bought too much in the past blush

    Kerya does it again LOL!!!

I was trying to figure it out too - couldn't work out what the genesis/genesis 2 stuff that are supposed to be in the new mega fast grab were.

Not to mention that 40% off is hardly fast-grab motivational. I do have a couple of older V4 hairs in my cart, but they were both 88%. Not worth digging out the plastic for $3.91. This whole sale has been somewhat "meh" so far.

It is interesting that the compatible figure is shown as Genesis 2  Female even though the title says it is for Genesis 3 Female. Anyway, since it was a new release in the PA sale on 6 Sept I'm not sure if including it in the mega fast grab is intentional or not. So, if you want it better grab it fast.

If I wanted them, I would get them for that percentage ... just saying. 88% would be enough incentive for me. And I like hair ... *grin*

Richard, is there a way to completely reset the Metadata for an item without resetting the entire database? I'm pretty sure the Metadata for one of my items is compleeeeetely broken beyond imagination and refuses to show up in Smart Content... crying

Have you tried right-click on a product and select Update Metadata?

These items from the Mega Fast Grab are also in the catalogs of the Featured PAs. The best deals, of course, are if you also buy a Debut or Still New release. I've got items in my cart with a 93% discount. (And these are products for Genesis 2: poses, clothing, hair...)

Ooooh, I didn't realize that worked for DIM installed items. I should try this :)

I'm surprised... there's actually *nothing* that I want from that fast grab. I think I may have bought too much in the past blush

Not to mention that 40% off is hardly fast-grab motivational. I do have a couple of older V4 hairs in my cart, but they were both 88%. Not worth digging out the plastic for $3.91. This whole sale has been somewhat "meh" so far.

I've had some really good deals this sale :) There are a lot of quality items at good prices right now... but unfortunately, I bought most of them already wink

That new wetsuit seems to be in the Mega Fast grab,

It is interesting that the compatible figure is shown as Genesis 2  Female even though the title says it is for Genesis 3 Female. Anyway, since it was a new release in the PA sale on 6 Sept I'm not sure if including it in the mega fast grab is intentional or not. So, if you want it better grab it fast.

Earlier today when I had that in my cart, it was discounting more with a Debut or Still New item.  Now, it doesn't seem to be discounting.  I know that's a great price without further discounts, but I'm a little disappointed that is was discounting earlier and now I won't be able to get it for what others got it for earlier.

Hm. I'm not sure whether to go through with my purchase. It's not a large one by any means, but I don't *need* any of it. frown

I didn't buy anything. I REALLY wanted the Gen 3 Iconic Shapes for Genesis and being able to get that for $10 sounded "ok" -not great but ok. But then I realized that I was only getting it to be able to wear V3 and A3 clothes on the newer figures -and since I don't use Genesis 1 I'd have to use the clone to get the A3 and V3 clothes to G1, then autofit it to G2F, then autofit it to G3F ...and that sounds like a pain in the bottom to me (not to mention you'd probably be getting a lot of distortion of the clothes by the time it gets autofited three times. lol So I decided to pass on the sale since that's the only thing I really wanted.

    I'm hoping there is a similar product (a V3 and A3 clone) for either G2F or G3F.

I almost never use clothes as they are; I use dynamics. You don't need to jump through those loops to get them on the figure; Dyncreator and particularly VWD work great, and I've bought clothes and wishlisted them since we had Dynamic options when previously I've not bought any - even passed on Pro bundles in part because of the clothes.

There are other loops to jump through, but the look is amazing.

Sadly I don't know how to use dynamic clothing. I tried a few times but I don't understand it nor how to get them on the figures. I don't know what VWD is either. lol Oy, so much to learn! :)

Weird. I randomly happened onto this: The PA Sharktooth is actually on sale as a featured PA, as he/she put out the Tween Julie expressions product... but the PA isn't actually listed as a featured PA on the sale page.

From my own experiences, exporting as OBJ and re-importing it actually fits MUCH better than those iconic shapes. :) So you saved money!!

He's listed between Ilona and Zeddicuss on the third line of artists on the page in my browser. He was there last night so it could be in my cache and have mysteriously disappeared. Chungdan is listed twice, too.
