Are you buying it? If not, why?
No, I am not buying it right away, though maybe someday.
Why not?
Because my webcomic is set in modern times, the year 2016 to be exact, and my characters are normal teenaged and adult Americans and/or their superhero alter-egos. I currently have no scripts that call for a woman in fantasy garb, at least through issue 4, which will take me to roughly June of 2017.
Now, having seen it, and how nice it is, I will certainly keep it in mind, and maybe at some point when I need a female supervillain or something, I can come up with one who will use this outfit. But at the moment, that outfit is much too genre-specific toward a genre that does not fit the work I am doing. And although I would like to encourage such items buy purchasing them even if I don't need them, I have a couple thousands of dollars of stuff on my wish list that I need for the actual scenes I have already written in issues 1-4, and those have to take precedence. I simply cannot afford everything, and I also can't end up in a situation where I am stopped from rendering the next page because I didn't buy a resource a needed, so I could patronize a product I just like but don't need.
But it is a nice product and now it's on my radar for future issues.
I suggest to everyone who has posted here, you should be considering buying it, and generally most of us should be buying it; if not, then all we wanted to do is bitch.
It certainly looks good... I only wish I could do it justice.
That is really not fair. As I stated above, the outfit is highly specifc to a certain genre - fantasy. Not everyone is doing fantasy renders.
I've been all over normal, everyday, 21st century clothing because that is what I need. School uniforms, skirts, business suits. You name it. And I do have some call for outlandish outfits, especially the more sci-fi ones, based on what my supervillains and heroes need for my upcoming scripts. But fantasy stuff is just not in line with the theme I am doing.
So I really don't think it's fair to point to ONE item, and say, basically, 'Buy it or you're full of crap.' It's not like I said I wanted full body clothing and then instead of this bought skimp-wear. I have no skimp-wear other than what came in bundles that I bought for other reasons. But I am not going to buy something I don't need at all, just because it happens not to be skimp-wear. The item needs to be something I can actually use, and use right now, not just in the vague 'someday.' As I said, there are too many things I need in my current scripts, that I still don't own, for me to be buying stuff I don't need just to prove a point.
Steven, just because the promo shows a fantasy setting, doesn't mean it cannot be used in a sci-fi setting. The suit and boots itself seem pretty good for either genre.

I have the set wishlisted.
It's on my list too. But it is simply not appropriate for any of the female villains I have slated to appear currently, one of whom is already finished with her renders (the main character's outfit has long since been done, like 8 months ago, other than minor tweaks).
I do have a character based on the old Champions villain Black Enchantress from the Coriolis Effect adventure, and the dark version of that costume would be PERFECT for her. But she leads a villain group that is not slated to appear for a long while yet. So it is on my list for someday.
Fair enough, but then you also can't argue that this thread is proof that there's a market for conservative clothes. If this thread has 40 people clamoring for "non-skimpy" clothing, half of whom, when presented with something fully covered, beg off because it costs to much or isn't the right style, than all you can argue is the PA is guaranteed at least 20 sales, of which Daz gets half the money. So if its $20 (not even thinking about sales here) you can guarantee they'll make at least $200!! No offense, but I don't think that's much incentive personally.
I understand this point.
But...
The lion's share, I'd even say more than the lion's share, of the skimp-wear is modern-themed. This isn't to say that there is no skimpy fantasy or sci-fi stuff (there is), but the majority of clothing available for G2 characters is modern, and the majority of the modern clothes are skimpy. So I don't think it is reasonable to point to a very highly specific single item of non-skimpy wear, and say basically, 'If you don't buy this even though you have no reason to use it, you're a hypocrite.'
After all, I don't buy skimpwear because I have no reason to use it either!
I think at least some of us are looking for the same theme (modern/contempo) but non-skimpy. The fantasy armor is nice but it does not fill that need.
And I do beleive that I, at least, have specified further above, that I am looking for what I called 'normal' or 'everyday' clothing. Not fantasy armor.
Supervillain and hero outfits I have pretty well nailed down. It's the everyday clothing and secret identity wear that I am in desperate need of. And this item does not fill that need.
Well, I have many comments, but I doubt people care or are really listening at this point so I'll simply say:
Art shouldn't be Work. One can make money on Art (and I spent years doing so), but the moment Art becomes Work, it's time to get out. If Art becomes Work, the Artist runs the risk of loosing their Spark. This applies to Vendors and Consumers alike.
What is your definition of modern non-skimpwear? honestly I think the daz originals do a pretty good job. I mean there's everything that released with Belle and, looking quickly,
All look like things you would see someone wearing walking out on the street. Errands outfit in particular looks like it could be used to make up 75% of my wardrobe.

...while it is very well designed and offers a lot of different options, I don't do much in the way of "high fantasy" scenes.
I imagine the main body suit could work in a cyberworld setting (after a bit of material tweaking), however, 21$ is a lot.(especially on a tight budget) to use only part of the complete outfit.
I would buy it. I really like it in fact. I think it has definite sci-fi application- but it is too expensive for me. 20 dollars for an outfit I may use only a few times is too expensive.
And there is another obstacle - good realistic clothig is hard to do, it needs lots of JCMs to keep the cloth hanging something like right and the laeyers not interpenetrating, so i would expect it to be around or over the $20 on intro sale point in most cases.
...which is why we need "open ended" cloth dynamics.

1) Lack of complete ships lately (ala, NightShift3D, some of the most complete ships I have seen). Although the Spaceship with detailed interior by coflek-gnorg is a step in the right direction. He could have given the ship a more beautiful shape.
2) Lack of originality. I see way too many stolen designs from games and movies. I recently purchased two ships that I thought were unique, turns out they were ripped right out off Wing Commander.
3) Aliens too seem to be taken right off current IP and when they are made there are no clothing items to go along with them, such as helmets for their unique head shapes, etc.
I have a few more, but you get the picture.
The major issue with Unique Sci-fi stuff, is The Big three Franchises (StarWars, StarTrek, and DR.Who) and many of the smaller once (Battlestar Galactica, Babylon 5, Buck Rodgers, etc) have been around for over 50 years, and while many of the early stuff might be laughable now (rubber suits with visiable zippers, body paint, bits and pieces of latex stuck every which way) , it is really hard to come up with a Unique Humanoid form, that doesn't in some way resemble something that has been done already. Same can be said for ship designs, and many have gone off the deep end to get a unique look, that would make the ship highly impractical. The key seems to be to make something that is just different enough to not be a copy. For myself, I'm trying real hard not to use reconizable characters or ships/uniforms, but sometimes it can be difficult. I'm currently trying to come up with a organic ship design I like, but keep ending up with something akin to Gomtuu from ST:TNG
The Gomtu shape ("egg") actually came first from one of Anne McCafferey's old series of books.
I suggest to everyone who has posted here, you should be considering buying it, and generally most of us should be buying it; if not, then all we wanted to do is bitch.
How ironic, that in a thread were people are complaining about hyper-sexualized clothing for females, the word "bitch" is not censored. I think that says it all.
...I'm that way with aircraft. Studied aeronautics and (save for the old Biplane, the Bizjet, and a Cessna for toon characters [which actually looks pretty "real"]), most of the fixed wing aircraft I see would have serious lift and/or stability issues. I mean it doesn't have to be a carbon copy of a Boeing 787, F-18, or Piper Aztec, but should still look like something you'd actually see at an airport.
Be warned, however, that the above IP rule applies to most real-life vehicle models as well-- even if you don't put the company logo on the back/whereever of the vehicle-- the design itself is IP. That is why you will see some vendors say "based off of the ____ model".
...that is pretty much what I thought I implied. I have no issue with a generic model based off a real life example.Just look at a number of Peitpet's automobiles (most of which I have), they kind of look pretty much like existing ones, but with a few minor changes to make them different, as well as slightly different names, to avoid any IP infringement. All I would like to see are more classic and contemporary aircraft that follow the basic "planform" and configuration of the last century. Nobody has a trademark or copyright on that, so again I don't see an issue with offering a model that is based off or looks kind of like "such and such" aeroplane". It just has to appear like it could actually fly by the basic laws of aerodynamics.
I do find it interesting that both Rendo and VanishingPoint can sell models of vehicles and planes using the actual names without charging ludicrously high prices to cover the cost of securing IP licences.

True. However, most are not complaining about the nature of the clothing, only over the fact it is not useful for them for what they do. That's totally different from ideological hypersensitivity. Thus nobody blinked.

The Gomtu shape ("egg") actually came first from one of Anne McCafferey's old series of books.
It was the "Sassinak" series, I believe. All FTL ships had to be egg-shaped for some nebulous reason.
Well, that doesn't really surprise me. The "Egg" shape is a pretty basic and common form in "advanced" Sci-fi ships, for both form and imagery, the egg being a subtle subconscious symbol of life and protection. But from BSG: "All of this has all happened before, and it will happen again." Good ideas will be repeated.
The thing is I often look at ships in Sci-Fi, and think how unpractical it is, mainly because the artist had to forgo logic for unique. ST:TNG, as much as I loved it, was one of the worst offenders. Imagine if you were at the center of the top deck of the ST:TNG romulan warbird, and needed to get to the center of the bottom deck in a hurry..... I have issues with pointless addons as well, such as excessive greeble, aerodynamics (on ships that clearly not intended for atmospheres) and large booms/holes. Some of my favorite ships include Moya from Farscape, Talon from Farscape, The Defiant from ST:TNG, and while it sort of breaks my previous shape dislikes, The Whitestar class Ship from B5. As well as several of the Narn Vessels.
Now I just need to find a way to make something that looks sort of like some of these, without being a "oh, that's from..." and try to make it invoke a air of being ancient. Sadly, I either over simplify it, or end up with a cuttlefish, which isn't really what I want.
You have to plan/design ahead for a star voyager, of course, but if it's an interplanetary transport there's going to be room for improvements and addons to be carried out in a nearby space garage. And when I think of addons, I see the ISS in my head. Kinda jerry-rigged (is that right) and helter skelter. That's what space allows us. But space also restricts us for space (ahem) for living quarters on those transports because it costs a lot to keep them pressurized and with the proper atmosphere mix.
It seems so many things are 'impractical'...which of course is fine. So much of fantasy artwork etc features 'impractical' armor and weapons as well as clothing. Not saying that its all unwanted and such, its just that personally i`d rather have more 'practical' things. I do enjoy creating pinups at times but do alot more everyday scenes , historical or just plain scenes using 'practical' items. I do miss the days of V/M4 because it seemed vendors and companies were on the same page creating content for more or less the same figures and software. Yes I understand why daz created Daz Studio, I applaud their vision and initiative. V/M4 was replaced by Genesis then G2....now lots of figures and new ones coming fast. Poser is out more or less but some of us just would prefer it but content isnt intended for it, its as an after thought. I`m glad I didnt spend money for things for the newer figures, now theres G3 and V7 etc. It used to be very simple and now theres so many different ones its confusing. Yes, the new figures look very nice and yes i`ve seen some of the things for G2 like the line of viking gear, really nice. Just cant see buying the morphs etc for just doing viking stuff. What it looks like to me whether true or not is that every new figure is very expensive once you get the morphs, cloths, hair , expressions, poses etc. It also seems that vendors energy is divided between different figures as never before. It also seems that useability in Poser, even tho it should be fairly easy, is shaky at best. Again, yes ive tried DS and dont like it at all. I see great work by others but for whatever reasons just doesnt for me. The main plus to Poser for me is that its fairly easy and rather fast to create, much easier and faster than Maya anyway. I just cant get into V7 or G3, theres going to be alot of new figures coming out that need their own things, and since figures are coming out rather fast I dont know how long before the next one. Just cant justify the expense let alone the time.
Anyway, thanks for your time and all the years of fun. It is my experience that if one expresses an opinion, honest or not, others will flame it when its not a popular one. Thus I will not be watching nor responding to this thread. I`m not silly enough to think the current trend will change, its a rewal moneymaker and thats the bottom line. Maybe one day i`ll be able to get some G2 stuff, by then it will prolly be on G8 tho lol.
Though I primarily work in Daz Studio, I have been finding each new rendition of the Genesis figure after the original to be less and less versatile. Genesis (1) was a complete break from the previous "unique" figure models, including the Gen4 M/F "unimesh", as one could freely cross-fit clothing as well as mix morphs, between any Genesis characters (even cross gender) without needing any third party conversion tools. Same for Gen 3 and Gen 4 as long as you had the various Gen 4 legacy shape clones. For textures, all you had to do wa switch the UV mapping to match (for Gen 3 the latter was an exception and this generation used what was called a "Default UV" which required special conversion software to convert to Gen 4 before adapting to Genesis)..
With G2 the process became limited as the mesh was split into separate male and female counterparts. For autofitting and skin maps, all you could draw from was the original Genesis and M4/V4 (provided you purchased the Gen4 fitting/UV clones separately). No more fitting any Gen3 clothing without having to go through a lot of extra steps having to create your own clone figure. On top of this last year, "unique" UV maps were issued with each different character figure released requiring the purchase of the base figure to use any textures that may be created for that particular model (much more expensive than the legacy shapes packs for Genesis)
Now we have G3 which is even less compatible as there not only have been changes to the rigging, but most significantly, how the texture maps are broken up. This latter change pretty much precludes transferring any older skin texture maps to the new figure as the material zones are grouped differently than every previous generation. This is supposedly for more accuracy, however it really limits what can be done without purchasing new texture content specifically for G3F.
At least from my perspective, it seems like with each "advance", Genesis appears to be moving further and further away from its original concept. I have not even bothered to install G3F as there is little I feel I can do with it without investing a small fortune which on my meagre income is just not possible.
Almost afraid to see what G4 will bring to the table.
Can't agree more (with the original message of this thread). There are all kinds of clothing you can give your figures. There are so many different cultures around the world and in history, each with its own unique and fascinating types of clothing. Why not explore these?
And don't get me started either on how (the original) Genesis is now to all purposes totally ignored in creating new stuff.
I suggest to everyone who has posted here, you should be considering buying it, and generally most of us should be buying it; if not, then all we wanted to do is bitch.
It certainly looks good... I only wish I could do it justice.

You'll notice I said, most; well aware that there will be some who would like to buy it but have constraints that make it difficult at best. It's more fantasy than scifi, but still doable, but no matter how good an item, for those looking for specific items for the theme that their workflow requires.
What is your definition of modern non-skimpwear? honestly I think the daz originals do a pretty good job. I mean there's everything that released with Belle and, looking quickly,

That's the ticket. As soon as DAZ releases the Genesis 3 teens, there will be a flury of more modest clothing. ;)
Although anyone out shopping, can't help but notice that the majority of teens and those in their twenties (and even beyond) know that skimp is popular.
...however what Wiz says is true. For the most part, clothing in the Daz store for teens does tend to be more "tame" side even though it may not necessarily be so in RL.
Even better, they now have a thread a bunch of us are watching to post in. So if they made say a business suit or something, they could post right here and say 'Hey guys here is a new business suit, see if you like it,' and I bet it would work better than a typical ad, because they know they have a target audience right here.
I saw that business suit and instantly hated it.. I hated how the jacket seams make a cone over the top of the skirt and I hate how stiff it looked and even in the promotional renders the materials looked sad and drabby. It is ironic that I can probably buy a real outfit cheaper than I can this digital one... The content providers better hope those boys in the Bangladesh never hear them telling customers to learn how to make there own digital clothes when they make less than $2 a day. No doubt they would put the lot of us out of business and we would have a more responcive market... but not money.
I point this out because it is the PA's product knowledge and experience of creating usable 3d models that helped them earn those few extra dollars and I think its important to remember that not a lot of people are making money using those creations. This isn't a flourishing capatolist marketplace... most of us do other jobs to pay for our DAZ art addiction... so I don't think many of us shed tears when we hear that content providers aren't making a fortune... that doesn't prevent us from wanting the best for as cheap as possible... which means we put things on a wishlist and wait for it to go on sale or we hope that maybe some of the quality makers can see the value of putting out great products cheaper because then more of us can afford to buy it.
Isn't it entirely possible that the sleazy outfits sell well because they are cheap options that people can afford? I can't tell you how many outfits I've bought and never used just because the price was right.
Just thinking out loud.
I do hate that the sales go so quickly.. I can't think of how many deals I've missed out on because it wasn't in my payday budget and I've got another week before I get paid.. I think in the end what needs to be done is a partner ship where the marketplace is growing because more people see the value and beauty of our work. The goal is to be the product everybody wants... We're on our way but its going to take time and patiences from everybody... It works out for the best because if I really want it.. sooner or later, everything goes on sale.
So dont buy it. No one is forced to buy anything. I dont buy everything. And we have all spent money on stuff we have not used.
And yes, please go ahead and make your own stuff if you want to. No one is stopping you. And no PA here or elsewhere is concerned if you or anyone else does. Thats because no one person can make EVERYTHING they need. I make poses, I can model cars and props too. Do I want to spend all my time making everything I need for a scene? No! I would rather buy character sets and clothing and hair plus the sets I need not because I cannot make my own but because I see no reason to try and do what someone else is already better at and I can pay a small amount for thier work to compliment my own. The "threat" of the "boys in Bangladesh" making content is like telling a farmer that he'd better hope the boys in the city dont learn how to grow thier own food. The world goes around cause we each provide different services that others need so they can go about their day without having to accomplish everything on their own.

I like Arki's outfits that I know from RDNA. Strange, that this small company can do intro sales with 50% and not like DAZ for 30%. I have add the outfit to my wishlist. When I wait a few weeks it would be part of a flashsale for 50% or later this year part of the annual PA Sales with better discounts as on the intro sale. Apart from that I can use then also my PC-coupons, when items are older than six week.
EDIT: The addtional two freebie sets for the Rune-Outfit, that Arkii released at Deviant are a nice way to give a little back to those who can't way with the buy.

No, I am not buying it right away, though maybe someday.

Steven, just because the promo shows a fantasy setting, doesn't mean it cannot be used in a sci-fi setting. The suit and boots itself seem pretty good for either genre.
I have the set wishlisted.
It really depends on the scifi.
i have a scifi webcomic, and... I'd have to really stretch to find a reason to use that outfit. It's s bit in the space operaish side of scifi.
It's on my list too. But it is simply not appropriate for any of the female villains I have slated to appear currently, one of whom is already finished with her renders (the main character's outfit has long since been done, like 8 months ago, other than minor tweaks).

That's the ticket. As soon as DAZ releases the Genesis 3 teens, there will be a flury of more modest clothing. ;)
...while it is very well designed and offers a lot of different options, I don't do much in the way of "high fantasy" scenes.
I imagine the main body suit could work in a cyberworld setting (after a bit of material tweaking), however, 21$ is a lot.(especially on a tight budget) to use only part of the complete outfit.
...which is why we need "open ended" cloth dynamics.
..the Hazmat Suit is already on the WL as it fits perfectly with the genre I work in.
...hear hear! ++1
The Gomtu shape ("egg") actually came first from one of Anne McCafferey's old series of books.
It was the "Sassinak" series, I believe. All FTL ships had to be egg-shaped for some nebulous reason.
How ironic, that in a thread were people are complaining about hyper-sexualized clothing for females, the word "bitch" is not censored. I think that says it all.
...that is pretty much what I thought I implied.
[stupid forum software logged me out while I was writing this]
Well, that doesn't really surprise me.
You folks take care and good luck.
Scott
...I can understand your position.
You'll notice I said, most; well aware that there will be some who would like to buy it but have constraints that make it difficult at best. It's more fantasy than scifi, but still doable, but no matter how good an item, for those looking for specific items for the theme that their workflow requires.
Fans, especially Pern fans, refer to that sort of thing as "Anne science". Basically "hand waving". ;)
