FaceGen did the basic set-up (eyes & nose shape, and eyebrows). I added in dial spins of morphs that I had plus a few custom morphs I created from other characters (like how the flesh above the eyelid hangs down, etc). I'm glad somebody notices the resemblence. At this stage I'm starting to see other actors (like Charlie Sheen) instead of Karl. LOL
However the texture is totally my creation using Sarsa's MR as a base. I also took HinkyPunk's eyebrow resource and tweaked it to fit Karl's unique eyebrows. Only because I couldn't find a decent hi-res image of the eyebrows to pull from.
Ok, round 1 billion ,526 million, 235 thousand and three. I'm way past the point of telling whether I have the likeness or not. I tweak, I render, and yes, GOT IT. Tweak, render again, nope not there. Rinse repeat. Someone else is going to have to be the judge. I'm too close to the forest to see the trees any more...
It's Genesis 2 at present. I use G2M because my render program of choice currently doesn't support Genesis 3. Hopefully that will change eventually. It shouldn't be too difficult to upgrade him to G3M if there was enough interest.
I'm still at the point where I can't tell if I'm close or pulling away from the likeness. I would appreciate some more feedback. I appreciate what I have received thus far. Any further wrinkles I'll have to add to the texture. I've added them to the morph but they appear to be too subtle for basic lighting.
I do have most M4 morphs ported over. Which full head morphs do you think might work?
I played with face size and it just looked too weird. I've already used eye depth to set the eyes back some. Looked at it again when I got home from work and I think you're right. I think I've pretty much nailed the likeness. I'm going to try my best and not mess with it any more and just leave it alone. Maybe port it over to G3M with enough encouragement.
When you first posted it and said it was an Abramsverse character I saw right away that it was Bones you were working on. So it's close, suggestive at least, I think. But without that clue I don't think I could have guessed it. Since you seem to be soliciting constructive ideas, I'll give it a go. I'm not great at this but I put your render side by side with a picture of Carl Urban, a couple of ideas to try:
Of all of those, for me the nose is the biggest difference from the reference picture, I think. It just isn't lining up probably with the reference. That and some more squinty eyes/lower brows might work wonders.
Please take that in the spirit it was givin, trying to be helpful and not critical.
Heh! Anyone think they may have had Redfern in mind when they made this?

Edit-->I just got her, and to be honest, there's considerable tweaking that needs to be done to the face to give her more feline features.
Left picture is Cat Lyn straight out of the box; Right picture is after applying a few tweaks. (I'm not even sure where I got all those morphs--maybe Creature Creator for G3F?)
Unfortunately, the ears just kills it for me--Marcius would've done much better to have used a 0-ear morph and provided geo-grafted ears to apply to her head behind her temples--which would've allowed for mobile ears like real cats have. He did great work on her feet, but unfortunately, neglected to do anything for her hands. At least he didn't do the disgusting ubiquitous "belt-tail" we so frequently see here, so that I can adapt something to give her a proper tail that's actually an extention of the spine. 7 or 8/10.
I'm working on a combination Combadge/Rankpin using the same ranking system as Star Trek Online, (used in my earlier prop). This is circa 25-26th century.
This prop can be used with or without rankpins (note: I'm finalizing a 3d prop version of the rankpins which can be used for closeups)
I am providing a smaller version of the comRank pin which can be used for the left collar as an alternative future pin.... Here are a few renders....
It supports all divisional logos (ie command, sciences, medical, etc), two different Starfleet emblems, and gold and silver colors. Ranks include Starfleet Warrent officer to A5 Fleet Admiral, this prop does not support SF Marines but I can look at that later. You can also turn the division logo and ranks off..
Comments welcomed....
Ryuu@AMcCF, Yeah, I saw that character and I had to approvingly chuckle when I saw the promo of her wearing "near enough" William Ware Theiss micro-dress. But you've apparently pointed out the thoughts I had about the set. Certainly a viable character for something, but not quite "there" for a Filmation Trek inspired Caitian, at least not the way I imagine them. I'll also note the textures are depicted as striated skin, rather like Cameron's "Na'vi", instead of a fur pelt.
Sincerely,
Bill
I don't think I've gotten any closer even after taken your suggestions, Grinch. The nose looks better in my opinion, but something about the eyebrows seems off.
Indeed. She's close to being usable--but just really needs something extra for her to work properly. But my own comments prompted me to take another gander into the mystery of geographing and surprisingly, a few tutorials I've found have whetted my appitite into getting back into moddling again---assuming I can stay away from bloody DAZ sales long enough to focus on the work. I definitely want to make her a set of ears, some paw-like hands (both 4 & 3-fingered), and maybe even a proper tail. Stay tuned
Fur & textures can be done by someone else, though....
I hope you don't mind but I made a quick side-by-side half face comparison of Urban and your morph. Based on it, the eyes look pretty good to me. The nose is a little low, the lip shape could be tweaked, the chin raised a little. It's getting there!
To what Grinch said, I see the nostrils just need a slight tweek to widen them, and ears need to be raised just a bit and pulled away from to the head a little, and a minor tweek to outer part of eyebrows. Yeah, definitely getting there!
Hey Redfern,
Potential Thundercat, or with a hell of a lot of tweaking, a K'zin maybe? With her legs being actual morphs and not a bodypart replacement, it makes it definitely worth getting her for that alone.
I guess if I ever am able to make geographs for her hands & ears, I won't be able to use the armor's gloves or helmet. But over 90% of the rest of her would still be compatiple to most G3 outfits.
Another attempt. I think the eyebrows might be throwing it off. Working on replacing them with something closer to Karl's.
Reworked it. Hopefully this one is closer...
And yet another attempt... Am I getting any closer???
Looking pretty darn close to me.
Adjusted the length of the face shorter. I think it looks better.
Looks real close IMHO
I think I'm going to table this project and move onto something else. I think I've gotten as close as I'm going to get until the next revelation strikes me.
Posted.... The 3d version of my previous rankpin from Star Trek Online is complete.... Good for upclose work...

Well, I have the cover, all I need to do is write a novel to go with it.
After watching all the "pros" doing fan book covers, and spending too much on tutorials during the March Madness sale, I finally decided to have a crack at it. This is the first one where I am actually somewhat satisfied with the results. This one would be set in the so-called Destiny timeline (the Simon & Schuster timeline) and picks up on a thread first laid in the Cold Equations miniseries and somewhat picked up on in Revelation and Dust. The quote is from Cold Equations: Book II: Silent Weapons.
By the way, the name is just the initials of my username.
