...so they do. Still not enough to get me to move to where it gets below zero in winter. I've become so acclimatised to where I am now to the point that +25°(F) feels more like the inverse.

Non-complaint: I've rediscovered something worth watching on TV. The series of "A Nero Wolfe Mystery" detective stories with Maury Chaykin as the elephantine Nero Wolfe who rarely leaves his house, and Timothy Hutton as Archie Goodwin as Wolfe's legs. Wonderfully done. And Nero Wolfe as played by Chayken is disgustingly endearing. A perfect blend of genius, arrogance, neediness, generosity, compassion, rudeness, anger and sympathy. And Archie, forever threatening to quit, knows Wolfe would be helpless without him and shows his own conflicting character sides extremely well. Felix the butler/cook is portrayed wonderfully aloof, frustrated and demanding yet subservient.
Each episode is performed as by a small theatrical company with only a few of the main character performing the same role in each of the episodes but the other players show up according to their currently assigned roles. Very good actors. After watching a few episodes you kind of get confusted thinking "wasn't he so-and-so in the last episode? But you get over it and just let the story unfold. The writing is excellent, the sets are well done, the acting is marvelous, and if you can follow the quick paced and complex plots, the show is immensely entertaining.
I found it on YouTube. The sound gets cut a few times at the beginning of some of the shows but you never miss any important dialog. (I think it's to trick the YouTube bots looking for copyright violations) but lately they've been supported by commercials so I guess the problem's been solved.
There have been other versions of Nero Wolfe stories on TV but this is by far the best. And if you run across the version with William Conrad as Wolfe, don't bother, it's just a dully butchered formulaic '70s gun show with stupid '70s music.
My sleep schedule is fubar, so I'm just feeling awake now. But I will look into this further later. Don't know anything about BIOS, though, so I hope it's not too complicated.

...yeah I'm pretty much the same, grew up on the "other side of the tracks" so the simpler pleasures are important. I wouldn't mind a bigger kitchen so I could do baking again (minuscule counter space for rolling out dough) and that has cabinet space to store my cooking tools (had to give up a few including cherished ones like my pasta maker and mixmaster as storage space is at a premium).
My basic needs along with having my own loo, living space, and a kitchen that isn't an afterthought (with gas stove & oven), also include a high speed fibre optic connection and a front porch to sit on during nice weather. Buying beer at a market is a lot cheaper than going to a pub, and I can always have friends over for socialising. Yeah, a small 1 BR bungalow would be more than enough. I'd pay a neighbour kid to mow the grass and deal with weeds and if I wasn't so "creaky" I'd have a garden (very therapeutic for the psyche).
Don't need a fancy car (no longer drive), don't need a 60" television with gigawatt theatre surround audio system and 500 channels of crap, However, wouldn't mind upgrading the computer resources just a bit along with getting my old Hi-Fi fixed and set up with some nice flat response speakers and a good turntable again (I miss listening to my record collection). Like old cars, old analogue Hi-Fi that was hand wired is so much better than the printed breadboard rubbish they make today.

According to the Amazon page where I got my computer case, the only way to get rid of the lights on the front is to replace the fans they are connected to. Bummer.
Been watching The Great on Hulu. It's a satire about Catherine the great, and not too worried about being accurate. But I'm enjoying it, even if I have to fast forward through the gross parts.

Complaint: I miss when browsers were really customizable. My main browser is Waterfox, which can still run the plugins I had to add when Firefox dropped Australis on us. But I need a second browser. Used to use IE. I'm currently using Edge. But I want the Forward/Back/Reload buttons to the right of the URL field, and I want vertical tabs on the right side. Apparently I'm the only one. Vivaldi can do vertical tabs on the right, don't know about the nav buttons.

If the lights are not really necessary to see from far away, then what you could do is just put a dot of opaque tape over them and poke a tiny hole in the center with a needle to let out a miniscule dot of light too small to disturb, but small enough to see if you need to.
I have lots of punches for making discs, so l like to use aluminum tape for ductwork, the type made out of actual thick aluminum foil, not just silver duct tape... being aluminum, it's very opaque... Also, in most brands the adhesive is strong, but if you decide to remove it, it doesn't leave behind a residue, so it's not exactly a masking tape, but most masking tapes adhesives dry out after a year or so, and the tape will either fall off or become impossible to remove.
You can leave the dot of material unpainted aluminum, or use craft paint or spray paint to match the housing or case color. If you lightly buff the aluminum tape with a scotch brite pad first, the paint will stick better.
I use tube punches because it's easy and doesn't leave behind adhesive residue on the punch head like it would on a cylindrical punch or hand punch... tube punches can be made out of old telescoping radio antennas... some dollar store like Dollar Tree sell telescoping inspection mirrors and magnetic grabbers which are basically a radio antenna with a dodad on the end. They can be disassembled for the tubing... and the ends sharpened by running an Exacto blade around the inside.
And of course the there is no need to make it round or paint it and any tape will do... as long as you poke a tiny hole in the tape to let a bit of light through.
Regardless of how you do it, tape with a pin hole is the basic idea.

...depends on how far you plan to travel. Amtrak is observing social distancing, but schedules have been cut back and some service eliminated for the duration (for example the Empire Builder from the Northwest to Chicago used to be daily but now runs only three days a week) .If it's a long trip, it can be expensive unless you want to sit up in a coach seat for a couple days. Compartments are ridiculously expensive. I priced at rip back to Milwaukee from Portland for summer and with a compartment it's over 2,100$. The round trip coach fare is only 376$ but the trip is 3 days and two nights long and meals are extra. In comparison, airline First Class out of is between one third and one half that.

That is a neat idea. I will try using aluminum foil over the lights and see if that helps. Maybe I can cover some of the lights and leave some alone (there are 12 on just the fans!)

Word of warning: Those only look like forks.
Non-complaint: What is it about partially snow covered ground that smells like Spring? After several weeks of many inches of heavy icy snow blanketing the ground, it's finally melted down to small patches of thick snow and piles of snow where it was plowed, and large greenish patches where the compressed grass and weeds is seeing the light of day. I walked outside to take the garbage to the can (first time I'd been outside in over 10 days) and there was a delightful smell/feeling of Spring. Is it the rotting grass or the thawing dirt or the moisture in the air from the still melting snow? Is it unseen buds on the trees? Is it the temperature of 40 to 50F itself? Whatever, I've noticed it all my life and it evokes very very old memories.
I think it has something to do with the greenery "waking up"... it definitely has to do with the plants, I notice a change in the air when all the plants start to drop their leaves... it's like the air becomes "deader" as the leaves turn colors... and that's not the dead leaf smell, it's like something is suddenly missing from the air... with that change as spring ramps up, it's like there is a "sweetness" to the air... it's like the air becomes more "alive".
Stupid analogies, but that's as close I can get to describing it without going full Tolkien.

F*****g Apple... Urrrrrgh!... F**k them and their stupid Photos app... It's garbage wrapped in rotting garbage stuffed in a sack of soiled gorilla diapers that have been sitting in the sun in Arizona in June.
I hate Photos with passion that transcends reasonable logic... it sucks and Apple insists on having you deal with it as the gatekeeper to your photos.
You used to be able to hook up your phone, open preview and direct the goddamn computer to transfer the pictures to any damn folder you want... or crappy iPhoto if you were into kinky self inflicted pain...
Now the moment you connect the phone to a Mac, it's like "oh no you don't, this is going straight to to Photo where you'll have to jump through hoops to sort this out"...
Forget doing that on a PC because it disconnects every few minutes, especially if you are doing a big .mov file... I so wanna go down to Cupertino with my favorite whacking shovel and express my discontent with those responsible for the aforementioned discontent.
This is literally a ten minute thing that so far has involved three computers, three operating systems and an hour and forty minutes of my time and I'm still not close to started because I'm now updating the OS on my MacBook to allow it to recognize the goddamn phone.
