I love "Carol of the Bells"

Somewhat Disappointed:  The image of the black hole revealed today was not that of the one in the center of our galaxy, but the even much larger one in the center of Galaxy M87, relatively "nearby" but farther than the Andromeda Galaxy.  And yeah, it looks like what they predicted, so that's good.yes  But as far as "exciting",  then meh, it leaves something to be desired.frown https://www.nytimes.com/2019/04/10/science/black-hole-picture.html

I understand the limitations of our instruments and the fuzziness is explainable and satisfactory to the scientists but I really wanted to see a picture of an evil big red robot falling into the hole. devil

Apparently they're still working on the image of the blackhole in the center of our galaxy.  So, stay tuned.

..agh, they want me to subscribe (as in pay them money) to see it.

I just cut & paste the URL into the text.  My question is, how does one provide a link to a youtube video that's not just a link? frown  Everytime I try half a dozen permutations of HTML options, all I get is the text link.sad  So, I gave up trying, and just accept the text link. (*sigh*)

..that's what I do but it always embeds the video instead of just providing the link.

Ah found it, I need to use the Paste Link control.

Non-complaint:  A little spinning music for a blackhole day.  "Asturiashttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K773rBQ2MVY from the "Suite Española" by composer: Isaac Albenizhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isaac_Alb%C3%A9niz

More spinning music:  "Omphale's Spinning Wheelhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-xXPVmk_Ok one of the four symphonic poems by Saint-Saëns    The story behind the poem is the story of Hercules being punished and forced by Queen Omphale to dress as a woman and spin thread on a spinning wheel.  The cadence of the music mimics the rhythmic pumping of the wheel's pedal.  Recognizable from the beginning but as Herculese finally gets over his shame and begins to understand the wheel and get into his task he really starts to shines at the part beginning at 3:21 through 5:00.  He finally finishes his task and falls asleep at the end.

    Composer: Camile Saint-Saëns  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camille_Saint-Sa%C3%ABns

Note:  We people of the elder persuasion may remember seeing if not playing with antique spinning wheels or foot pumped Singer sewing machines and instantly recognize the sound of a manually pumped wheel.  I even remember working with a hand pumped blacksmith's forge that had a heavy metal fan that blew air through the coals to heat the iron pieces being worked on.  The cadence and technique of manually pumped wheels is just one of those things that you'll never forget once you grok how to control them.

...another "spinning" work. This one written by Marcel Dupre after a visit to Brittany where he encountered women still using spinning wheels.

I thought it was from a James Cagney movie

1932 "Taxi" James Cagney, Loretta Young. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCej7-kJJP8

The early Warner Brother's (and others) cartoons would sometimes portray familiar actors of the day and their "tag lines" in some of their cartoons (eg:  James Cagney, Abbott & Costello, Humphrey Bogart, W.C. Fields, Peter Lorre, etc.)  But the one I remember because I never knew who it was till just a few years ago, was the horsefaced woman who was drawn as a Pilgrim in one of the cartoons.  She had a very distinctive voice and haughty attitude.  Which made her easily cartoonable and put her in a class with characters like the others I mentioned above.  Edna May Oliver. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edna_May_Oliver Great character actress in early films.

Non-complaint:  Finally found the other blackhole image.  Found this YouTube video that shows both the one from Galaxy M87 and the one in our galaxy.  And there's a really good explanation of just how tiny they look from Earth and why it was so hard to get a sharp image. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_GVbuddri8

The "You dirty rat. You're the one that killed my brother." Those words in exactly that order were never delivered by Cagney in a film. Just like Bogey never said "Play it again, Sam." These were semi-quotes invented by impressionists which caught on with other impressionists and the general public. Dat's de trut', see!

Would any of you answer this phone call... First off picture Siri’s evil robot aunt’s voice (sloooooowly) leaving this message on your answering machine...

“... (long pause)....0...3...2...    7...  5... if this is (your name) please stand by for an important announcement... if this is (your name) please press 1 now.... if this is someone who can take a message for (your name), please press 2 now... if you would like this message repeated, press 9 now.... (long pause) your reply did not match any of our data... .... please stand by while we forward your call to a service representative... (cue some really, really bad 70s game show/ porno flick/ elevator music)... (then the sound of the phone picking up and call center chatter and the phone hangs up).”

Add a healthy numbing pause between each word.

So for a week or more I’ve been finding this message on my answering machine no less than three times per day... the same thing, the same “800” number... over and over... eating up several agonizingly long minutes of my message space and just pissing me off to new and excitingly ambitious levels...

Looking up the number is usually pointless because every scammer uses “spoofed” numbers, but I wanted see if perhaps it was a legitimate company calling... but basically I found nothing on the internet that indicated who this was, except for one guy who wrote on a nuisance call site that it was my gas and electric company... as in he used the name of my gas and electric company... which I scoffed at figuring that’s what the scammers are pretending to be... but, just to be sure, I checked all the numbers provided by them and the number in callerID didn’t match any of them.

So yesterday I get a bill in the mail from my gas and electric company saying I owe them $52 because something in the automated payments changed and blah, blah, blah it turns out to be legitimate... and apparently it’s been overdue for a month or so...

I know I’m a jerk most of the time I’m awake and even quite a bit while I’m sleeping, but holy cat crap on a stick, does this kind of bull bunions piss me off.

I used more colorful language in my head... I try not to curse over here... although I’m quite proficient at it in person.

I get a doctor’s office leaving an enigmatic message on your answering machine because it’s personal medical information that nobody wants falling into the hands of Soviet spies who might exploit knowledge of an inflamed butt wart for nefarious purposes...  but the gaddang gas company can’t leave a friggin clue as to who the hell is leaving this terribly butchered message in this day and age of unending scam and phishing calls? WTFFF? Yes, three Fs... you should of heard that out loud, apparently people find it funny when I blurt that out in frustration... apparently I’m like a really crude Basil Fawlty when I’m annoyed.

So a little while ago I’m in the middle of a phone conversation with my wife, and I’m getting annoyed about something we both find annoying and I get that call interrupting me... beee.... beee... beee...

So I pick up the call to see who or what actually answers... after the whole long robo-schpiel, I find that apparently the gas and electric company has that really cranky old lady who died a few years ago, the one who played the sarcastic cranky old bailiff on “Night Court”, apparently they reanimated her to act as “Customer Service”... (also sounds like “Roz”,  Sully and Mike’s supervisor from Monsters Inc.)... I know it’s not nice but I very succinctly let her know about my opinion of their automated annoyance system and that it’s not actually very functional or useful and that leaving multiple messages on my answering machine at the same damn time every day is useless, since obviously nobody is home at that time, and since you don’t identify who the hell is calling, you’ll never get this issue addressed and that technically it’s still illegal to leave multiple messages about a overdue payment, especially such a stupid small amount.

I think I’m going to have to go to the pet store and ask if I can pet some of the bunnies... either that will calm me down or the bunnies will gain a static charge which will give them superpowers.

Also... what the hell is “Becca”?

Every time I start to type “because” ( “because” it’s a very commonly used word) the iPad insists I want to write “Becca”... and it changes “because” to that...

I better not pet any bunnies now, they’ll probably catch on fire...

Getting lost in the threads is something that happens here frequently haha

The other few pics I have I do kind of feel would go over the heads of most folks here but no harm in sharing I guess~?  Even if the subject matter doesn't appeal, the art itself could be appreciated maybe!

Aww ps1borg :<  I haven't seen Fyre either, maybe I could try pinging her at DeviantART hmm...

Anyhoo. As an example of "Nobody's gonna get this..." this was something that popped into my mind while I was reading a Halo book a week or two back. I felt it was very, very obscure and I was quite right. Besides the crossover involved here (Warcraft and Halo), what I was referencing in particular was more than "just" obscure. It was a thing locked behind one of the more intricate novels in the Halo series that most fans tended to not understand or bother reading to begin with.

The simplest way I can explain is that the names underneath each of the dragons was one of the castes (or "Rates") in the Forerunner's society,  with the exception of "The Timeless One" which is more commonly referred to as "The Primordial" and was one of the antagonists in the book Halo: Primordium. The reason the bronze is all grumpy is because he didn't get to join in on the fun with the others, and has to sit in a corner since he's representing the only one not related here!

Actually it's a bit more complicated than that but there's no easy way I can explain without needing to explain half a dozen other things which in turn might need their own explanations.......  Like I said - obscure xD   I feel I was the only one to find it amusing, which I guess is enough for me - I was drawing it more for myself than anything anyway~

The other two pics are a lot simpler to understand, and are just crossed over with Monster Hunter. The first being the dragons just fighting one of the MH creatures, and the other being re-drawn as a Fatalis (Another dragon from MH).  The bronze one was the only one I was truly happy with there; I feel I got the proportions and stuff spot-on with that one but less so with the others.

This is a fatalis btw. I couldn't find any real good depictions of one on my computer I have on hand right now (Well, I did have an animated gif of one but....),  but they're noodly dragons and really cool!

The number (n or n.n) refers to the wires and data transfer capabilites.

The letter refers to the connector type:

    USB cable types: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SHEnaV1SYA

    More about USB-c cables: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdwqZAkYWzQ

Unfortunately USB "standards" are approaching the insane non-standard "standard" of the old RS-232 serial connectors of the last millenium.  There are several YouTube videos out there bemoaning the drunken orgy that must have preceded the last USB naming convention decisions. frown

However, it is worth researching right up to the point where your brain feels like it's going to explode, so take a break now and then. enlightened

I knew people who worked in the Bureau of Standards many decades ago and came to the conclusion that they were insane even back then.

I fear the day that data transmission media naming conventions become so complicated that they need to adopt the SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) identification string technique that is an open-ended string of dotted numbers such as 23.45.46.02.109.42.... identifying the path down a potentially infinitely large tree of design possibilities.  Anybody who's ever worked with SNMP ID strings knows what I mean.crying

(Note:  SNMP "Simple Network Management Protocol":  Now there's an oxymoron if I ever heard one!)

...yeah, our local electric utility is like that, so is the Social Security office, but instead of pressing a number you actually have to speak back at it which I find even more bothersome.  I can curse at it, and after a few moments of silence it replies "I do not understand that response, please say your response again."  Some people tell me I should go back into working for a customer service centre for an agency like this to make a little extra on the side, but apparently having encountered more and more of these robo-answering systems, that apparently seems to be an occupation which is in decline (and I don't do sales of any kind).

...ugh. was supposed to be sunny and in the mid 60s tomorrow, now rain and the only in the 50s. Had plans to go for a walk, meet with a friend or two  & such but so much for that.  There however, will be a break starting midweek next week where it is supposed to get up into the 70s.

On another note, finally got the Browser spell check to flag typos but whenever i right click the forum software overrides it and just gives the forum's "cut", "copy" and "paste" options.  So still have to send my posts to word to correct spelling.and then copy the fixed version back as the dictionary for the forum spell check routine is pathetic and rarely  never gives me the correct spelling for common typos like Word or the browser spell check does.
