Superheroes Rebooted - Ready to Rrrrrender?

  • Yes, you can - using the geometry editor, select the polys you want and then right-click to bring up the menu.  Go to 'Geometry Assignment: Create Surface from Selected'  Then name the new surface.  But then you're left with the new surface at basic 3DL with no maps applied, so you have to copy+paste (after applying Daz Iray Uber shader if applicable) from the previous surface it belonged to, and tweak from there.

Ok, @SilentWinter, I'm ready to try this. Only it occurs to me to ask: How exactly do I "use the geometry editor"? I've never done this before. I assume I go to Edit/Object/Geometry/Update Base Geometry/Update Full Geometry, yes? And then what do I import - the .duf from the My DAZ 3D Library/People/Hair path, or something from the /data path? Seems like a strange question to be presented with (that is, "what geometry do you want to import?"), given that the item has to be selected before they ask you the question. I'm not sure I'm understanding this correctly. Thanks --

You need to select the object in the scene tab, then go to the menu bar and select 'Tools -> Geometry editor' (so no, not the 'edit object' bit)

You are then able to select polys on the mesh you have selected in the scene tab (and handily not polys from another mesh, even if they're overlapping).

Who remembers? You mean, "who could forget..."!

Multi-Man was one of my heroes.

Awesome stuff, especially since all of the old HB super-heroes are appearing in comics again. Very well done!

Carrara is an all in one modeling, animation rendering program that DAZ sells. They haven’t updated it in years and give it no attention, but it still has a following in the forum. Personally, i think it’s much better than Studio.

I (and I daresay We) have every confidence in you, megarandomness. Be patient. Experiment. Ask a lot of questions. Look for YouTube videos. Someone on the forums can explain anything you need. Often (but not always) there's someone there at the very MOMENT you need them.

Happy Thanksgiving, and happy rendering!  : )

  • Hi, @Geminii23. The G2F Ultra Bodysuit is half off today, in case you missed that. Of course, you're probably already maxed out on your DAZ Black Friday budget like I am. But it seemed worth mentioning... Have a great day!

Here's an updated dramatic portrait of my G8M Superman.  In case anyone's interested, my Christopher Reeve face morph for G8M is now available on ShareCG!

Thanks.  Just snagged that one.  I didn't have much money to spend this year but that was worth grabbing.

  • Wow, Gregorius - that likeness is AWESOME! I assume that's the M4 hair? I sure wish that piece could be upgraded a generation or two. Or 4...

    Darkseid is.

Genesis 1 with various morphs (mostly Freak 5, Evolution, and Zev0's morphs). Costume autofitted and modified from JoeQuick's freebie for Freak 3. Rendered in DS, postwork in various.

British Graverobber in very tight shorts.

Figure is Genesis 1 with Gen X transfer of Angel for V4, Evo Morphs, and a little A4 and V5. Rendered in DS. Postwork in various with Ron's War Essentials.

Thanks for the kind words, John!  Yes, that is Rievel Hair for the Generation-4 figures.

Here's another render of Superman, now that I managed to track down a sufficiently high-res cityscape panorama to use as a background.

Credit goes to Kaleomokuokanalu Chock for the background panorama, used under this license.

    The Lion and the Dragon
Squall Leonhart and Bahamut from Final Fantasy VIII.

Figures are Genesis 1 and Millennium Dragon 2.0, respectively. Squall's outfit kitbashed from multiple items (Night Guard for Genesis, Tre for Justin 5, Firearms pack and Panko's freebies for the Gunblade). Rendered in DS. Postwork in various with Ron's Steam and War Essentials.

    Just a generic superhero render.

    Superheros II

  • I'm having so much fun with the Geometry Editor tool - it's my new favorite! Solves all SORTS of problems. Thanks, @SilentWinter! For example: DC's Man Bat. I'm not a special fan of this character concept and certainly not his name. Especially because he's a Batman opponent. Really, DC - whatever you were paying your creative geniuses when they came up with this one... you got ripped off!  lol  But the more I worked on him, the more I like the way he looks... This was an interesting challenge, like Two Face was.

Whoah.  Would love to see your Two Face render.  I am still doing alots of trial and error with kitbashing and trying to come up with comic characters.  Most recently I was wondering what the effects would be of layering clothing using Opacity Maps on certain parts.

Hi, @Geminii23. Sorry it took a few days to get back to you. But when I went to attach some old renders as illustrations, turns out they didn't suffice at all. So I re-rendered them with the necessary corrections. (And by the way, Robert - I wanted to second the opinion of your generic hero render. It's a very different style than the one I like to go for in my own work, but I like it!)

First up: Two Face. I'm pretty sure I posted him a while ago, but not since I redid it using the Geometry Editor tool. And in the process of re-rendering, turns out I had to move the action to a different spot in the environment, thus requiring a host of other tweaks. Nothing is ever simple.

The interesting thing about him is, some G3M characters have shaders for different-colored left and right eyes. Brown and blue, for example. But nobody has a one-live-one-zombie shader! The only way I could figure out how to achive this was to parent a SECOND G3M to Two Face's head. (I probably should have parented it to the left eye instead, but so far no problem.) The parented copy is entirely hidden except for the left eye; the main figure is entirely visible except for the left eye. Otherwise, I grafted the zombie textures for the skin and the mouth onto the normal textures in GIMP.

The detail shot shows the original hair setup, before I learned about the Geometry Editor. What I did that time was to use two instances of SickleYield's G2M Hat and Hair Helper to suck the left and right portions of the two hairstyles inside the skull as much as possible. Not perfect, as you can see, but passable enough from some angles. Named one the Armani Hair Helper, and parented the Armani Hair to it; the other I called the Mathius Hair Helper. The full render shows the Geo Editor solution. Enormously simpler, faster, and perfect from all angles. I love it.

Next post will show some clothing layering examples. Working on that now...

Ok - now for the layering. This is going to make me feel like a fashion show emcee (lol), but here goes:

I chose my three favorite GI Joe team members from the 1982 line. First among them, purely for your benefit, is Snake Eyes because he uses almost exclusively Smay's M6 superhero suit. I knew you'd appreciate that! (I kept the sword because he wore it later on, and besides he needed a harness. There's no decent ALICE gear for DAZ figures. Not since M4 anyway, and that lacks suficient quality to make the transfer.)

The goggles are from Luthbel's Horror Survivor for V6. Parented, not fitted. The boots are from X-Ninja for G3M from Renderosity. The Uzi was a freebie I found on some other site. Cgbytes, maybe. A lot of modern-era armaments can be found for free out there. Same for grenades, but I also used Luthbel's War Dog items for a lot of the Joe team. These might be his. Snake Eyes is also wearing a pair of Kool's G3F Evil Shadow gloves with everything hidden but the sleeve pocket - a must for all the '82 Joes. Her other pouches and equipment get used a lot too.

This time I DID keep the environment simple: he's inside a primitive cube colored gray, with two overhead lights and a camera prepositioned. I just load the figure I want, and render.

Next up is Stalker. Like most of the '82 Joes, he's wearing a Sunday Casuals G3F shirt chosen for its turtleneck and long sleeves. I did a web search for tiger stripe camo to texture it. His sidearm is from the M6 SHS too, if I'm not mistaken. His web gear comes from Serzart's Ranger Outfit G3F, the thigh pouches of which I used many times over on other figures too. The beret, pants, boots, and and knife are from War Dog. The rifle is a freebie; it's a variant of the same one that came with the action figure and shown in the art. I couldn't find the exact model.  :(  The artwork shows a camouflage beret, but the actual figure's was green.

Oh: And thanks again to the Geo Editor tool for turning a corny G2M Unshaven preset into a regulation Army moustache! So much easier than fiddling with dials and pokeaway and Fit Control.

I forgot to add my reference pictures for Snake Eyes... (His model also has a SciFi visor like in the newer card, but I like the look of the original goggles better for some reason. You can only show one at a time and the visor is hidden.)

Scarlett is the one I thought of first, when you mentioned layering and hiding various elements of clothes. That's why they call it kitbashing of course; you combine parts of kits that weren't designed for this. Some models are just not flexible or versatile enough to work though. Older stuff especially.

I only have the G2M version of AnSy's Mech Gear outfit. That's the basis of her suit. On top of that is the G3F Olympic Leotard with hidden sleeves. A second pair of pants from G3F Scout Outfit, showing only the thigh pockets. Exnem's Action Girl boots. Deadly Silence G3F pouches on a Private May belt. Not sure which sidearm it is, or which gloves. Her Hunting Crossbow is from the V4 generation. She has several hairpieces with various parts of each hidden. Knee and elbow pads from Genesis Future Wilderness. G2F Soul Hunter gloves. The G3F Kristel Outfit has shoulder pads that are right on. A custom opacity map hides the left one. I saw some boots with ankle pouches once, but I can't remember where. She needs them  : )

That's the thing about kitbashing; you try every combination of every item you own, and sometimes you just have to go out and buy a set that has the one perfect item you can't seem to make work.

I don't know what caused the splotches on the legs. I've never seen this figure render that way until this time, and I used her in a lot of HDRI tests. Looks like not enough female facilities in the '80s Army!

  • Last one for now is Baroness, because... well... wow.  lol. Movie version it is!

She also has two pieces: G3F Leather Bodysuit overlaid with G2F Smay SciFi Suit. On top of that is probably a tight-fitting t-shirt with a COBRA logo I placed and created an opacity map to match. She has Exnem's holster and Kool's Evil Shadow boots (Sometimes the models don't quite let you hide a detail completely, like the metal decorations on the boots that don't quite disappear. Bummer.) Glasses are from the G3F Army Uniform. Fingerless gloves are easy to come by.
