...maybe that is what happened to all the dogs people brought to where I was as they began to run around frantically chasing one another, in the process, nearly knocking standing people (self included) over as well as diving into or over where groups of people were sitting. It made me wonder if these dog's owners were the same ones who take their pets to fireworks shows.

Our dog just sat outside with us wondering why the hell we were sitting outside when it was so nice and cool in the house. So it got dark for a little while and then light again. He'd seen the same thing happen whenever a big cloud passed overhead. If dogs could shrug, he would have. smiley

Well, because of weather I didn't drive 700 miles to South Carolina to see the eclipse so I saved $400 on motels, food, gas & trinkets. Yea!  Now I can probably find a few other ways to enjoy some of that  moneysurprise  And it just so happens that the final symphony of the year at Chautauqua is tonight.  Additionally, this concert is another of their "Community Appreciation Nights" so the admission is only $20.  Yea!

Concert tonight is Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTE08SS8fNk I don't particularly like violin solos.  Violins en-masse as accompaniement to the other instruments are OK, but to me most solo violin music is just scratchy, painful, chewing aluminum foil noise.  But there are a few violin concertos (orchestra + violin soloist) that are so beautiful and well designed that they transcend the innate noise of the solo violin.  The first movement of the Tchaikovsky violin concerto has (for me) three notable places that often bring me to tears.  In the YouTube I linked to, they are at 7:03 through 7:39 a clear statement of the main theme.  Then the section between 14:05 and 14:40 is violin magic.  It just sings.  There's where a great violinist and a million dollar violin shine their brightest.  Actually from that point to the end of the 1st movement it's all good but the last three minutes of the 1st movement from 16:00 are wonderful.  The powerful dynamics of a Tchaikovsky ending.

The 2nd movement beginning @ 19:50 is OK but I don't fawn over it.  It's a period of relative rest for the soloist from the exhausting 1st movement.

The 3rd movement beginning @ 26:26 attacks immediately for a grand Tchaikovsky ending lead by the violin soloist.  Energetic, clear, fun.  It's all good but the last 2 and a half minutes @ 34:00 are typical Tchaikovsky brilliance.  Another concert where everybody in the audience immediately explodes with "bravos" and thunderous applause.

    --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---

The other main piece of tonight's concert is the Brahms 1st Symphonyhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Ij6I_zhBdU Brahms was awed by Beethoven and waited until he was in his 50s before attempting to write a symphony worthy of Beethoven.  His wait for maturity was rewarded and this piece is often favorably compared with Beethoven.  This is yet another piece where at the dying away of the last note the audience immediately jumps to its feet and shouts "bravo" and claps wildly for many minutes.  A truly classic piece.

The first movement begins with a pounding beat and descends into marvelous pathos

The second movement begins @ 18:40.  Slow dreamy quality.

The third movement begins @ 28:25 and quickly states its main theme and takes off on a flight of fancy around it only to descent back into the pathos.  Then @ 37:45 begins a slow climb out to the

4th movement that begins @ 38:58The 18 minute 4th movement is difficult to break down into interesting spots, it's all dynamic, large and magnificent.  It's like the best of Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Dvorak and Wagner all rolled into one.

I've heard the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto before but I've never heard the Brahms 1st Symphony in concert before. Tonight with both these top notch pieces I expect to have a wonderful time.

I don't know if any of you link to any of my examples.  I share them with the hope that they point out places of interest in lengthy music to spur an appreciation of their worth.  And also just playing the whole thing might make interesting background music while you're DAZing.

As I said I find only a few violin pieces enjoyable.  The Mendelssohn Violin Concerto https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1dBg__wsuo is another one of them, as is the 3rd movement of the Brahms Violin Concerto https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jM12fUAlZtU

Because of my heart troubles, caffeine is not my friend anymore. sad  I don't drink much soda (pop) beverages at all anymore but when I do it's either Sprite or Mug Rootbeer despite the vast amount of sugar (or other sweetener) in it. indecision

Concert tonight was wonderful.  Weather was terrible though.  Threat of tornados during the day and threats of thunderstorms all evening.  I was lucky and made it to Chautauqua between storms.  Got there a couple hours early.  Had a hamburger and rootbeer for dinner, then an ice cream sundae.  Parked myself in the Amphitheater between storms and took my usual seat near the top at street level, just under the roof.  But quickly learned that when the rains come the wind carries the drops about 5 rows of seats down into the bowl, so I relocated about 8 rows down. yes

The first piece (Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto) was well done and I enjoyed it as did everybody else as evidenced by the immediate full standing ovation.  smiley

Also the second piece (Brahms 1st Symphony) was marvelous, huge, dynamic, emotive.  The Brahms piece went off without a hitch, no interruptions or distractions.  I wallowed in the music for 40 minutes.  It also received a full standing ovation and long thunderous applause. smileyyesheart

HOWEVER, during the Tchaikovsky piece the woman and her 3 year old daughter directly behind me grew more and more distracting, the girl was kicking the back of my seat, jabbering, whining and talking right in my ear.  I tried to ignore it and never said anything, but did turn around a couple of times and gave a displeased look.  Then the woman decided she probably better take the girl out and as she did, the girl whined and screamed all the way up the aisle and I could hear her still screaming as they walked away down the street.  It took me 5 or 10 minutes to stop fuming and get back into the music. angry

People, if you think your child is ready for a symphony, make sure they know their indoor voice, have had their nap, and have been broken of tantrums.

Additionally, after the Violin concerto, the soloist gave an encore and was playing some marvelously high notes and some person listening outside the fence had a dog that decided to sing along with the high notes. frown Sigh, I think they need to put up a few signs with pictures of dogs and children with red "NO" circles with a slanted line through it on the streets around the Amphitheater. indecisionenlightened

And to top things off, the lady in front of me was using her camera to try to record the event but her light kept coming on and spraying a beam of light down toward the stage.  I was about to tell her to put it away but her husband finally grabbed her hand and clearly said "PUT IT AWAY!".

The Chautauqua Amphitheater is a great and relatively inexpensive place to get some marvelous live music but being so casual, it has its problems.  And I seem to be the victim of many of them.  Perhaps its payback for my life as a grump.  Sigh,  I think the karmic universe is picking on me. sad

It takes four days for my road to dry out after it rains. For two months now we've had a thunderstorm at least every three days.
I finally got to ride my Sportster a couple of days ago, then storm that night.
    >sigh< Why did I buy a motorcycle again? As a fancy lawn ornament?

...I know the feeling. I just saw the latest ecommended system requirements for Daz and they make me feel my system has just become a doorstop. Even if I upgraded the CPU and memory to the maximum it would support, it still falls short. When I originally built it, it was a total beast with the (then) new i7 930 CPU, 12 GB DDR3 tri channel memory, dual 7200 rpm HDDs (250 GB boot and 1 TB library drives, an Nvidia GT 460 with 1 GB VRAM, and W7 64 Home ed as the OS. Suddenly feel sort of discouraged as I would need some sort of a windfall to catch up again. There are days I hate the tech curve.
