Especially California and Arizona.
Or living in Florida with delicious, sweet, perfect grapefruit on a tree in your backyard, yet not permitted to have grapefruit because of your medications.
Until the medications restriction, the grapefruit in my back yard thing was so wonderful, just toddle out in my bare feet in the morning, reach up, squeeze a few to find the best one today and pick it. Mmmmm, loaded with juice, sweet, tender, tasty. No sugar needed. Mmmmmm
Yea, budget can be stretched enough this summer to include one more ROAD TRIP! Yea!
Weather permitting I'm going to drive the 725 miles to Columbia South Carolina to see the solar eclipse. Never seen a total one, but I'm not going to stick around for the next one, so this is probably my last chance unless I win the lottery soon. If weather is not permitting then I've decided to make about a 300 mile trip to way upstate NY to see Boldt Castle in the St. Lawrence River instead. I was there 50 years ago but they say it's been renovated and more complete.
I've already made my hotel reservations for the South Carolina trip and I made sure that they are refundable (up to 48 hours before).
...asploding dove?

From a film ("Allegro non Troppo") by Bruno Bozzetto modeled after Disney's Fantasia but weirder. The cartoon parts are great but the live action stuff is juvenile stupidity even if you read the subtitles. Don't bother watching the original film, poorly done and stupid. Just find the 6 cartoons here with the live action cut out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8gm14zMY0U Start times for the six cartoons are listed in on the webpage.
1) Debussy: Prelude to Afternoon of a Faun (lonely old letch)
2) Dvorak: Slavonic Danse #7 (leaders & followers)
3) Ravel: Bolero (march of evolution)
4) Sibelius: Valse Triste (cat in bombed out house)
5) Vivaldi: Concerto in C for two oboes, two clarinets, strings and continuo (bee at a picnic)
6) Stravinsky: Firebird (Adam and Eve, the temptation)

Hopefully Kyoto Kid hasn't melted in this heat. I assume Portland is hotter than Eugene, as it has been all week. According to Weather Underground, it's already 95º F here, and well on it's way to triple digits. My complaint? I really, really want to play with DS and some of my new stuff, but the beast will make the room unbearable. It's already pushing 82º... and the only air conditioner is in the living room.

Trying to watch a movie about a Captain in WWII.
Dog on the field...it's the pitcher! Poor birdie. Yes, I know it wasn't his fault. How the hell do these guys throw a ball faster than we're allowed to drive our cars?

I saw a movie about a spider but there were no real spiders in the movie. There was a kid but no real spiders.
something you don't see every day :0
Lucky you. Have you ever been to a total solar eclipse before? It really is the spectacle of a lifetime. Just be sure to get proper viewng glasses.
I am only about 8 hours away from the path of totality; but I have to work that Monday night. So, I doubt that I will get to go. I still remeber going to the 1970 one in Virginia Beach. The weather cooperated and it was really spectacular.
Not planning to do much for the rest of August myself :)
playing with unicorns
...
Viewing glasses might be a problem. I wasn't sure I was going to be able to afford the trip so I didn't buy the filters for my binoculars and cameras soon enough, and now the proper one I wanted is sold out.
I think I'm just going to make a pinhole projection viewer from a long skinny cardboard box to view the pre and post totallity phases,
and use the camera without filters to catch the corona during totallity.
I also realized that the trip to SC will be the day before final symphony of the year at Chautauqua and I was hoping to catch it (Brahms 1st Symphony). I could do it but I'd have to hustle! 12 hours driving down to SC, 12 hours back. I'll have two hotel nights during the entire trip but I should be back home by two hours before the concert at 8:15 PM the day after the eclipse. I won't buy ticket to the symphony ahead of time. I'll get it at the gate if I get back in time.
what yoo put in your home made salsa?
neighbours tomatoes look ready for picking, hoping he shares again
I saw the one in the 60s...I don't think it was total, but near total. I took photos through my Sears telescope. it was about a 3", perhaps a little smaller, refractor. It came with both a lunar and solar filter. They screwed into the eyepieces. But they were pretty good, not just coated glass, they were solid color all the way through. I used to look at the sunspots, and the craters on the Moon. I had a Kodak Instamatic camera (126 film) and the outside diameter of the lens housing was the same as the outside diameter of the eyepiece I used, so I held the camera up to the eyepiece and held it in place and snapped. Then I adjusted the telescope for the movement of the Sun, and repeated. I a little series of shots. They actually came out pretty good! I still have the prints. It's actually surprising how well they came out, considering my photographic method!

Check out B&H Photo. They still have some reasonably priced glasses and stuff available.

I'll be in Columbia too. Just look for the old fart on the black Sportster.
Avoiding the interstates, back roads are more fun.
A Cat in Paris was a good movie.
LOL... That's pretty much how I've felt the last couple of days. It's supposed to cool down now, only mid to upper 90s... Looks like the foil sunblock stays in the office window another week, or three!
There was a total eclipse visible from here (UK) in 1999, in theory at least, because it was clouded out. Just looked like an exceptionally dull day!
Regarding the eclipse: I'll have to go all the way outside.
I used a pair of binoculars to project onto a bit of white card and that did quite a good job of filtering the cloud out, to see the basic shape at least.
