The hair in yesterday’s Golden Ticket item (Glenda for Genesis 9 Alien Character Bundle) is dForce Gena Hair for Genesis 9 (https://www.daz3d.com/dforce-gena-hair-for-genesis-9).  It has five Iray shaders – Gena Hair IOR (extra high to low).  What does IOR stand for?  What parameter are the shaders changing?  Thanks.

IOR is Index of Refraction. An example of index of refraction is when you compare corn syrup and ethanol. Both are transparent buth corn syrup seems more diffuse and fuzzy than water and ethanol seems super clear. In a practical sense, it is one of the major components of glossiness along with roughness. If you notice in the image you attached, the highlights are stronger whe IOR is high and minimal when the IOR is low. Often when I find a omnishader hair is too shiny and not saturated enough, i adjust IOR from 1.5 to 1.1.  The big use case is to make hair look wet.

Thanks much for your definition and insight.  I find it frustrating to read technical writing where the author uses an acronym assuming that every reader knows what it means.

I have to admit that it is a topic near and dear to my family. My sister-in-law is among other things (actress, dancer) a jeweler and often works with diamonds where refractive index is a big thing. I attach a photo of her rings made with recycled estate gold and rose cut cognac colored diamonds which only have a small amount of refractive index:

Diamonds are so sparkly because they have a high index of refraction (you might mean small critical angle), or are they low IOR as diamonds go?

The refractve index also affects a person's perception of the actual color: shade, brightness, etc. even on matte finished items, and it can be quite strikingly different. This is a critical factor with color coatings or plating on satin media blasted steel and alumininum, Two identical items can be color coated in the very same batch, but will appear totally different if the blast angles and strength of the final finished surfaces are not the same. The actual colors are the same, but people perceive them as different shades color.

"Recycled estate gold?" Does that mean something like "dead people's melted-down gold?" Nice jewelry; looks very malleable.

Thanks for your excellent explanation of IOR, BTW.

    Happy Sunday, all!

    Here's your weekly reminder to:

    •  grab your QG's before midnight UTC (roughly 7 PM eastern daylight in the US)
    • don't freak out if changeover doesn't happen right at UTC midnight, as it seems like things usually change at around 15-past
    • don't freak out if the prices seem high; usually they're right in cart initially, and the store catches up with it at normal Daz changeover

May the odds be ever in your favor!

Today is a good day to shop at Daz. That 60% wishlist discount on top of the Golden Ticket discount (which you're getting anyway for the wishlist discount) and the 30% off coupon code for featured artists... I got Cynder Blue bundle for $3 (and I only have 1 token; people with more stacked up would get even better deals).
    Thanks Daz and PAs!

Also, thank you SilverGirl for the reminder! Something more to look forward to today. :)

Definitely a good DAZ shopping day! Which Cynder Blue bundle did you get for $3?

Ella one. I like the jewelry, and the character is nice too. The clothing isn't my thing in this one, but with so many parts, I'll likely use some of it for something.

To be frank, yes... There is an awareness of ethical issues in making jewelry and fine metal artifacts. You go see the crown jewels of a given country in Europe and you will see that they are artifacts of taking precious items from Africa, Asia, and the Americas, melting them down and forging these objects. Even the precious metals that are mined are removed from the earth have the cost of putting workers in perilous conditions and ravage the earth.  So to minimize the ethical and environmental damage, jewelers buy estate gold which is from dead people (so no taking from living people) and is legally available (the liquidation of the estate provides a legal verifiable paper trail and the metal is available because owners want to sell it), and it is green to recycle gold than to  purify it from ore.  The gold isn't particularly malleable at 18K so the rings are cast and hand finished. I do want to point out the cut of the diamonds which are cut in the rose cut which dates from the 16th century and uses the IOR 9index of refraction) to make the diamonds look like pools of liquid in this case rather than the later old mine cut and brilliant cut diamonds. You remind me i should render some gems, I try to colled all of the gem shaders and props in the store.

Yesterday was pretty good for me, with the coupon code, WL deal, GT, & a couple tokens. I got https://www.daz3d.com/skyward-arch (GT), https://www.daz3d.com/troubadour-for-genesis-2-male-shttps://www.daz3d.com/sy-flexible-skins-and-merchant-resource-for-genesis-9https://www.daz3d.com/bs-dforce-cloth-simulation-shaders, & https://www.daz3d.com/xi-fantasy-village-bundle for $12!

Debating whether it's wise for me to do a repeat today.

    ****

@nemesis10 thanks for the cool information.

I've noticed that when I cancel a month of D+ with time left, if I wanted to, I could get a month of premier at a discount. I really wanted to do that this week but too many other expenses all at once. If it works out, I may do that around the holidays and see how it goes.

Above five, tokens have two rates - that is why it says "Up to X% Off" - depending on whether the vendor is Daz (the higher rate) or a PA (lower, the maximum is 30% with 8 tokens). See https://www.daz3d.com/daz-tokens

...OK this is a nit misleading

...so I have the Golden ticket item from a Saturday (PerspectX's Skyward Arch) which I already purchased and is still valid through tomrorrow (Monday) however I'm not seeing the full 60% discount on wishlist items,.

I suspect looking at the text in the small print I need to not have it purchased it yet as it has to be "in the cart at the same time".   Once again poor wording of the requirement,

  • Yes, the WL deal requires a current Golden Ticket in the cart & yes, the wording could have been clearer. But the discount more than pays for the GT item, even for small carts.

That is small consolation if you own all the existing GT items because of cart shuffling.

I'm confused about how sales+tokens work together. Namely today's wishlist sale (and the tokens)

Somehow the token math doesn't come out correctly with 6, 7 or 8 tokens used:

If I use 5 tokens: 60% discount (wishlist sale) + 25% discount (6 tokens) gives the 70% discount as it should be (0.4*0.7 =0.3 = 70%). Which is correct.
    Using 6 I get 71% instead of 72%
    Using 7 I get 72% instead of 74%
    And using 8 is what I wrote 72% instead of 78%. 60% discount (wishlist sale) + 45% discount (8 tokens) should be 78% discount if I'm not mistaken (0.4*0.55=0.22 = 78%)

I'm daz+ tier sub and I'm using the numbers the checkout page gives me. Wanting to buy a bundle I wishlisted a while now so too low price isn't the problem, it's still like $20 after the discounts. If I put other products into my cart I get the same calculation regardless whether that product is "new" or not "new" (both from my wishlist of course).

Is my math incorrect or there are some terms and conditions that I forgot about or didn't read the fine print somewhere? o.O

It's like 1-2$ difference now sooo not a huge thing just weird and unexpected.

I don't think anybody really understands the DAZ store's exact process, especially since they started adding all the "minimum price" qualifier prices into the mix, as I've seen more than a few carts go UP significantly in price after adding a coupon that should have adding an additional discount.  In this case, though, given that the problem starts with six items, it sounds like one of those "only X number of items" deal restrictions buried on the sale may in play, as there have been a lot lately that will only apply up to five items.

    ...OK something's messed up here.

I put the Armored Personnel Carrier Suricate by colircat in my cart and applied the "NM-EDGE-CASE" code from today's orange banner, but it returned the "Coupon Code is not valid" error,  The item appears in the "Classic" category of the Featured Artists section with a 65% discount.  Checking the "Read me" indicates it was released in 2024 so it is hardly a "new release" nor is it a D+ item..

I also have two Golden Ticket items from this weekend that are still active today, so what gives?

i think somewhere along the line you now need a current, like today's, golden ticket item in your cart. Try it and see what happens, you can remove it if you want, but I've seen this a lot, and end up buying a ticket I did not want, but the discount offsets the price of it

this isn't too bad a deal at all $3.99 https://www.daz3d.com/edgy-weapons ; If you sort by BUNDLES, some nice deals are there, but many single products as well. The only negative is that nothing stacks with that offer.

I guess these fixed-price discount sales are good deals for people who only buy occasionally or have very finite budgets, but my usual qualifier in looking at them is to see what kind of discount I'm getting in my average cart these days and compare that to the "normal" price of the product compared to the discount percentage that would take it to the fixed price.  Usually, the regular discounts work out to be better deals in my case, as I tend to have a lot of tokens, and there were less than twenty products in this batch that were better deals, of which I already owned all but seven.  One ended up going into my current cart, the rest were mostly older stuff from the V4/M4 era, and a few funky prop packages like a collection of light sabers and a modular gun.

I almost missed it until I discovered that it only required a gold ticket item, without any tokens or anything else.
