Work while rendering - within DS

Is there a possible setting which would enable you to work on a scene, such as check light settings or settings within a light set, or just look at possibilities for the next render? As of now, once you hit render, that locks out the ability to use smart content, or look at anything. Not wanting to change any settings , just the ability to look at possibilities

that could work other than having to load/install pretty much a lot of the same products I have on my main program.

    you mean plugins?

    can copy most over

I have in the 4 versions of D|S I have installed

some need extra bits found outside the plugins folder or in application data like GenX and LAMH

    but it's definitely doable

If you mean Product-Library, you can just path it to the same folders as your 'main' DS

Wioth how intensive the use of the graphic card is using Iray?  Even if it could be done, I'd imagine that you'd be looking at a lot of crashing.

I run DS4 and DS6 at the same time most of the time. You can run renders within either one as needed, though yes, they will sometimes crash if you try to render in both at once (assuming the second one doesn't run out of VRAM instantly). Frankly, even with occasional crashes, having two instances of DS running is a godsend and I have no idea how I worked without two instances in the past.

The other value to both is instant access to plugins that haven't been ported yet.

I found a few ways to minimise crashing:

    • Uncheck CPU from the instance you''ll use for rendering
    • Alllow it to start render-iterations before ALT-TAB
    • Render to file not 'render-window'
    • Buy more RAM

    • I uncheck CPU the moment I install DS and never touch it again.
    • This is usually the time I want to save. Most of my renders that matter will have 40-90 seconds of startup as LIEs are generated anew and similar prep stuff.
    • I never remember this option. But again, I have renders that last 15+ minutes. Not being able to abort early would cause other downstream delays. Sometimes even IRAY preview will not show a poke through that is obvious in the final render.
    • With 128 GB system and 24 GB VRAM already, this isn't really possible.

maybe I mistated what I want to do, or cannot explain it properly. During a render, you cannot look at anything in your smart content library, or content library, can't look at sdifferent camera, diffenerent lighting options , or anything. All I want to do is to be able to just "look at" different ideas during the render time for my next render, not actually do it until the current render is done. So I'm always thinking, what other clothing piece can I use, what lighting options do I have, what pose will I use for the next render. You can't do that as the render locks out everything except the render process.

  • If you are looking for what is essentially just a catalogue to browse for ideas while you have a render running, why not run a different copy of DS? You could even pose your scenes in that, save them and then open them in the other one to render.

This is basically how I work, except that I run 4.24 on two different PCs side by side and transfer save files via USB stick (until I've sorted out my new NAS anyway).

yes, for sure that would work.  Much work to install everything though

  • If you are only using one PC, just use two different versions of Daz - 4.23 and 4.24 for example, or 4.24 and 6. Render to file in your chosen version and compose in the other. No need to install anything other than a second copy of DS.

Just use instancing, no need to multi-install anything Daz Studio Pro 4.12 - instances

Well, having DS 4 and DS 6 is convenient for other things. For all it's missing scripting and plugins, simming in DS 6 is much faster than in DS 4, for example.
