@AsuCafe
Sure, but is there a brand that is known for good taste and aroma, but for a good price (generally).
I met The Reaper last night just before I went to bed. He could get me some coffee sent over (and only ever prepares it when you're ready for it),
but sadly I'm not the sort of person who spends £18 on a packet of coffee, not at the moment, although I'm working on fixing that situation :-D
Visit The Reaper's Necro Coffee Crypt if you dare - oh - and it was nice knowing thee!
"Your soul may be doomed.
Your coffee experience shouldn’t be."
I don't live in the US and can't give accurate advice, sorry.
To drink it black, I need a smooth coffee like Arabica beans.
And I prefer it even if I put a little cream and sweetner in it. The more acidic coffees give me severe heartburn which kind takes the fun out of it.
I couldn't otherwise tell the difference.
On average, I would roughly drink 2 pots of coffee a day. Especially when I was at the police department. We weren't allowed to leave the jurisdiction, so we made our own at the station. Even there we would fresh grind. I'm a big fan of "Eight O'Clock Coffee." These days I may be able to handle 2 cups a day and sometimes not even one full cup. I do drink a lot of loose-leaf tea instead, and it is fine for my system.
Sorry, Richard, crossposted. Understood, in fact I've found that silt in the bottom of my cup when the SONA was used. Will definitely have to pick up the same one as my mother has though, exactly the same, since it's a great machine and even looks kind of elegant!
I reckon if I got one of those and ground my own beans to maximize the aroma, I'd be well sorted in terms of coffee (and coffee aroma).
Begs the question, though, what are the best coffee beans on a budget?
Buying coffee beans is mainly a matter of personal taste. Freshness is always the most important factor. I once bought very expensive Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee beans. Because they are roasted in limited quantities and few people buy them, each batch takes several months to sell out. When I bought them, they were no longer fresh, and the taste was really just average...
Ah, intersting - I have bought Jamaican Blue Mountain a couple of times to use over Christams/New year ab=nd the second time definitely lacked the appeal of the first, I assume that was my crude taste but maybe it was the same older roast thing.
Coffee lovers in my area are used to ordering from small shops online, where the coffee is roasted only after the order is placed. This is affordable and ensures very fresh coffee.
Mini-adventure ahead: Wheee... tomorrow is another day out of the house. Bus to dreaded dentist on the far side of the city (also need to purchase a new 10-ride bus ticket at $2.75/ride). Brunch at some fast food joint near dentist's on the far side of the city. If time & energy & weather permits, a slog one block up the hill across from dentist to the Wegmans grocery. Return to dentist to meet bus for trip to near side of city to the chinese take-out, then either an Uber home or Uber to my standard grocery store, then an Uber home. Would like to be able to eliminate the grocery Uber, but it is what it is. I had planned on a nice Indian-Summer day tomorrow, but at the last minute the weather gods didn't play fair and have decided to rain all morning making for a hot(86F) and humid day. I'd wanted to do dentist, lunch, and grocery at the far side of the city, but I'm not quite sure I want to slog up the hill, then slog back down the hill with two big heavy bags of groceries, in the rain.
Complaint: The bus company has changed their rates. I used to get my rides for $1.00 each for each "zone". Far side of the city was two zones. Now they're charging $2.75 each ride. I liked the old way better since most of my rides are just one zone. Regardless, it is, what it is, and it is, after all, a day out of the house, and Chinese take-out, rain be damned.
World letter writing day: Hmmm... never heard of it. Although, I am proud to say that I can, and do still write some letters in cursive.
I haven't written an actual letter since I last wrote home to the 'rents to ask for more pocket cash for college. So I'm thinking I'm 73 now so that would be...a long time ago. Yeah.
Do birthday cards count? I sent the last one to my little nieces and nephews when they were little. The youngest is almost 30 so I text or Facebook at them on their birthdays unless I forget, which is most of the time. They never forget mine though. But they text or call which is nice.
So I guess this is the place where I come to communicate words by type them at other humans, feeble as me is.
complaint: The bags under my eyes feel like they weigh 50 pounds today. I no longer have circadian rhythms. I have caffeine. It's structural. And when it runs out, I fall over.
On coffee:
I'm not high brow. I like the store brand Buttery Rum coffee at Target for use in my French press. It's seasonal, so I get a butt-ton (metric) of it when fall rolls around, and it lasts me. No idea if it tastes good on its own, but it goes well with the stuff I throw in it. (These days: chocolate flavored whey protein powder, which isn't the absolute best, but whey protein helps with cholesterol levels, and I'm at the age where I have to care about that stuff now.) I saved some old glass bottles from when Teen Kiddo was on a pineapple juice kick as a young'un, so I do a batch of six pots, put them in bottles in the fridge, and then all I have to do is pour. Minimal prep = my friend.
If the day needs more than that, I go with Community Coffee in my espresso machine, and I turn it into a fancy thing. One of my friends was a barrista at Caribou for a while and taught me how to make the kind I like at home, so I get the indulgence without the price tag or travel time.
I also have some Costco store brand pods that can go in my single serve, which as a regular and bold brew settings (I only ever do bold). I don't use them super often, but they're handy if I have to ask Teen Kiddo to make me a mercy cup, or doing the espresso drink is more time/effort than I have available
Partial Complaint: Weather was terrible today. Raining cats & dogs all morning. Caught bus on time to the dentist for 9:00AM appointment. Yay! No hope of toddling the street afterward for breakfast or grocery shopping, despite having my umbrella with me. Cancelled 11:00AM bus pickup immediately after appointment done (9:20AM), took Uber to hole-in-the-wall beanery for breakfast at 9:35AM (Mmm... steak & eggs). wasted enough time at breakfast, toddled to east end of decrepit mini-mall to the Subway & picked up a sub sandwich, doritoes & a root beer for lunch later this afternoon, wasted enough time there. Toddled to west end of decrepit mini-mall when the Chinese takeout opened (11:00AM), picked up Szechuan Chicken takeout. Already had spent too much money on Uber so I cancelled grocery shopping for today, and just Ubered home. Mmmm... Szechuan Chicken for supper tonight and tomorrow night. Who needs groceries when you have Chinese takeout?
Complaint: Dentist wants $3400 for root canal work! I have no insurance that covers that type of work. So, I've opted instead for extraction ($350) now, and possible replacement ($????) when I win the lottery. Extraction is scheduled for October 1, on same day as a cardiac stress test at the hospital. Far enough apart in the day so it is possible, and far enough away in the year that it won't conflict with my 60th high school reunion dinner which I really, really want to attend.
Non-complaint: After arriving home I updated my personal financial spreadsheet and it all balanced, on the first try. Wheee... small miracles. And I've still got $125 left in the budget for the next two weeks until "payday". I may be able to get groceries yet.
@SilverGirl: I hope you can get some sleep soon. That does not sound pleasant.
@LeatherGryphon: I had the same problem with three of my teeth. My insurance wouldn't cover root canal, so I had them extracted. It did cover a partial plate for two of them because they were next to each other. Anyway, good luck with yours, and eat soft food while they heal.

I've just finished stocking up with a flat (i.e. half-case) each of pea soup, mushroom soup, tomato soup, and chicken noodle soup for the winter season. After extraction I'll make it a souper week.
I'm very curious though, that if you use Turkish Grind (which basically looks like coffee powder), does that mean you can just put it into a cup and pour hot water over it as you would with coffee from a jar? I only ask because, in effect, you would be drinking the "silt" since the entire coffee bean would become a form of silt, so is that a doable thing?
I've never had Turkish coffee (as witness my thinking it had coarse grounds) but it is still coffee so no, it won't dissolve. Instant coffee is, as far as I know, essentially the output from running water through coffee grounds that has been dehydrated, to leave just the flavouring/colouring compounds, so that adding fresh liquid rehydrates it. Hmm, you can evewn make your own https://coffeaalchemy.com/how-to-make-instant-coffee-from-ground-coffee/
Just out of interest, which Glendale? You have about three dozen of them over there
This one is in Colorado! Glendale, the 'Rugby Capital of America' (or so they claim).
Hey, their field is a block south/up from where I live on Cherry Street. For a city that prides itself on national sports teams this is one that is routinely ignored. But then Denver doesn't even have a Little League baseball team for the kids. That shocked me. I hear the team has a great gym and if you're a resident of Glendale you can go to it for free. Unfortunately I am a Denver resident, even though my apartment complex entrance is on the Glendale side of the border.
@SilverGirl: I hope you can get some sleep soon. That does not sound pleasant.
Thanks. Little Dude had a beast of a time getting to sleep again, but at least he slept pretty solid this time, and I only had to get up twice for the bathroom. So today I'm not too brainless to do the coffee steps. :) (You'd think it would be muscle memory by now, but sometimes halfway through my brain glitches and thinks I'm making Little Dude a cocoa instead...)
Probably the bestest coffee I've ever purchased in a cup was from a Dunkin' Donuts that several friends and I used to frequent when I was stationed on the Navy/Marine Air Station in Iwakuni, Japan. The signs were all in Japanese, but there were pictures and the ever present displays out front. The shop also had a sushi & yaki/soup Soba bar, looking not much unlike the renders shown. We used to just sit out front watching the people go by, sometimes for a couple of hours. We would flirt with the Japanese high school girls, who would more than a few times flirt right back because all of us were 18 or 19 years old ourselves and they thought it was funny. It was a bit strange because all of the tables and chairs were just one size too small.
I don't know how to break it to you all...but well, I don't like coffee. Give me soda or hot cocoa and I will generously allow you to have my share of any and all coffee.
There's only been one exception. When I was a very little girl, I loved toast in coffee. Dad would cut up a slice of buttered toast into 6 pieces, put each on a fork, dip it in his coffee (with cream & sugar) and lay them out on a napkin. Just for me. It was our breakfast ritual. No coffee has tasted as good as that.
non-complaint: I checked the place I left the little turtle... no turtle. I know I'll never know for sure, but I choose to believe I wasn't too late after all, and he managed to rally and will live a good turtle life (and hopefully stay away from pavement until he's big enough to get across safely). :)

Mmmm..., I'm still enjoying Szechuan Chicken & sub sandwich at home. Got enough for tomorrow too.
Rained all day yesterday and last night. Heavy thunderstorms during the night. Humid and hot today, and will be hot tomale'.
Winter grocery supplies from Amazon are stocking up in my pantry again. Today I received three half-gallon bottles of tomato sauce. Mmmm... future goulash, chili-mac, and spaghetti. Ordered Wheaties, nuts & raisins. Perhaps tomorrow my feet/knees/hips will be healed again and I can walk to the local grocery for salad greens & bananas.
The My Beans Have Seen Better Days Complaint Thread
I was once at some fancy restaurant, and they gave me the tiniest cup of coffee for the cost of maybe a car. And it was good. More significantly, it included biscotti. For the sake of novelty, I dipped the biscotti in the coffee. It was a wonderful experience. I started buying biscotti for a while, so I could do that at home.
The best coffee I ever had at home was from a low cost machine with a reusable metal filter and Ethiopian beans from Costco. They were kind of wet and sticky, with kind of a smoky flavor. My grinder was cheap and would do an average coarseness regardless of what I set the dial to. I’d never be able to do a finer or coarser grind. But the one setting it had was what I needed.
I don’t have time for that anymore. I just use the pods and have good enough coffee.
The I Don't Know What Aestivation Is Complaint Thread
I remember once seeing a television show about nature. There was a place experiencing severe drought. All of the creatures, including reptiles, were entering some type of stasis due to the dry heat. They weren't moving at all. Then it finally rained. And all of the animals, including the little green ones, became active again as if nothing had ever happened.
I also recall a more personal situation in which I thought there was a dead snake in our driveway. I put it in a garbage bag. The next morning, there was no snake, and there was a hole in the garbage bag. Yes, life finds a way. Fortunately, it found a way while the bag was outside.

By the time I would be able to save up for the upgrade I need, it would be considered "legacy tech".
