I want to see the day when an AI robot in a weightlifting contest, when in the third round, determined to beat its competitor, ends up with a torn rotator cuff or drops the weight on its back. Then, they will have come of age. A blood curdling scream would be nice too.
They're definitely a vision of the future, and not a good omen unfortunately. A robot dominated battlefield where humans are at a severe disadvantage due to speed, strength, intelligence, endurance & visual acuity. It has been forseen by many, many sci-fi writers, but it may well be under 5 years away. Heaven help the Geneva Conventions. There won't even be a pretense at meeting them. If it moves: it's a combatant. No such things a civilians.
The pace of development is incredible. On a purely technological basis, their development is staggering.
Non-complaint: Wheee..., so many interesting (though pricey) events during this part of the summer. Nephew's birthday party last Saturday. BFF high school friend is in town from NYC. Tomorrow is the long postponed appointment (postponed by cardiologist, not me). I managed to get my appointment changed from the inconvenient 3:00 time that they had picked, to a more reasonable & convenient time for me, of 10:20AM. Arranged with BFF to pick me up about 11:30 at the medical center to go for our semi-annual luncheon. That saves him a trip out into the boonies to pick me up in the morning. Also, since the appointment is in the morning I can take the one-and-only bus from my house into the city at 8:00AM. And since I've been trying to get to a long established, locally famous, breakfast restaurant in the middle of the city, just two blocks from the medical center, I finally will be able to sample their menu. Then a quick toddle down the hill to the medical center, then go to lunch with BFF at Olive Garden in the mall area on the far side of the city, then finally, after six months trying, get to the nearby J.C. Penney's department store for some proper clothes shopping, and a ride home to end the adventure. Wheee..., busy day, doctor satisfied, two good meals, new clothes, renewed friendship, and able to unload juicy local gossip. No complaints. And then in a couple of weeks, mid September, BFF is returning from NYC for our 60th, and final official high school reunion. Busy time of year for me. Happy, happy, joy, joy.
complaint: Three weeks since the last support payment came through. They're not regular, but they're not usually this late. Hoping the ex- didn't get canned again; I don't think he's ever kept a job longer that 2.5 years, and he's coming up on that for the current one. I emailed my caseworker to see if she could provide some info, but she's been singularly useless so far, so I don't have high hopes. And if he is unemployed, I'm sure I'll get the "oh but don't worry, it'll just accrue as arrears" line again... because knowing he'll eventually have to pay back the 0% interest loan I'm forced to float him... when it's not too inconvenient or hardship-inducing... is such a very big help right NOW.

Now that's a mindset. "Oh, don't worry if you don't have any money. You''ll eventually get some." Can they tell the grocery store not to worry because they'll get paid eventually, too? I swear people that work jobs like that must have had their brains removed. Anyway, I'm sorry you're having to deal with the PITA ex. He needs a kick in the butt.

I have a day-long migraine, so I am not very with it right now. @SilverGirl, I agree with Butterflyfish totally. Unfortunately I saw this with my son's wife's ex. He was abusive to her and the kids, and yet when my son and she married, refused to allow him to adopt the boy and girl. That would have given them access to his medical insurance and other benefits. The guy was rich, worked for his dad, and continually failed to pay child support, cover medical bills, and other requirements stipulated by the divorce. He is now abusing his new wife and child. And his kids are in college and don't want anything to do with him. My son set up college funds for them when he married their mother, and worked to make sure they had everything they needed.
As a single parent with one paycheck, I know how hard it is to cover the basics. Robbing Peter to pay Paul was my way of life for a long time.
You are a wonderful mom with two great kids, and fantastic parents. Hang in there.
@butterflyfish - I KNOW, RIGHT?? I've actually had caseworkers tell me that they'll contact him and remind him that he needs to pay. Lady, he knows. He's opting out. And then they're like "well, if you have a problem, you can take him to court." Okay. Let's break that down. I have to pay to file the paperwork to get a court case opened. I have to round up all the necessary proof and such. I have to find childcare for whatever time they decide, because kids aren't allowed either in the courtroom or to be proximal to virtual cases (I agree with this, kids shouldn't witness grown-up stuff like this, but still... burden on me). And at best, they.... OFFICIALLY remind him that he needs to pay up. At which point he will continue to not pay because there are no actual consequences that matter. Are there legal consequences that exsit? Yes. However, no one will enact them beacause they "don't want to create hardship for him, and that might make it harder for him to pay you." EXCUSE ME WHAT??
Dude spent our entire marriage saying "it's not like I'm legally obligated" any time he didn't want to perform some bit of basic decency. Turns out, even when he IS legally obligated, he doesn't do it.
@memcneil70 Wow, what a horrid situation. Those kids (and their mama) are lucky to have your son. It's amazing how some jerks just really want control, and they'll do whatever they can to have it. I hope his new wife and kid can get to safety. Thanks for the hang-in-there, though. We'll be okay. I've gotten through way worse and come out swinging. It's just so infuriating when the system seems to think "figure it out" belongs more with the person with the kids than with the deadbeat who treats adulthood like a giant game of One, Two, Three, Not-It.
@SilverGirl That sucks so much! Wow. Wouldn't want to create a hardship. SMDH. My kids' father was in prison for most of their childhood, so I got a whoppping $50/month from him. I supposedly could've asked for more or goltten back payments when he got out, but I figured I'd take what I could get and call it done with.
@memcneil70 That also sucks. I'm sorry your family went through that. My kids are no contact with their father, too. (Shocking, I know.) Good on your son for seeing those kids were taken care of. Not every guy would do that. You raised him well.
kyoto kid where did you find the PDF Complete dForce Tutorial & is it still available? I need that. I also don't do well with many video tutorials. (RiverSoftArts' & Sickleyield's are exceptions.)

@SilverGirl and @butterflyfish and others, just a note on men, in my military career and later in civilian life, I have met so many who are wonderful fathers devoted to their wives or partners, children, and grandchildren. Sometimes it can get you down when you think the bad ones out number the good ones, but look at some of the ones here on DAZ forums and know there is still great people who stand by you.
Update on my trying to learn GIMP. I am still working through @Dreamlight's tutorials and I noticed that he is repeating many steps and is careful to explain them, especially in the 'Conquer 3D Now...' series. So I watch carefully, bring up GIMP and the current layout is very like Photoshop and match what he is doing. It is making more sense to me now. Baby steps, but I am getting there. There are currently 57 items of his in the Outlet store. They seem to move in and out of both frequently if you are interested.

Agreed, and I'm blessed to have a lot of truly good men in my life. My dad and brother are awesome, my (late) grandfather on my mom's side was wonderful, and I have a lot of guys in my social circle who are fantastic as well. Some of my closest, most trusted friends are men. Honestly, I think that's part of why I ended up with such a monster... he faked his whole personality when we were dating, and my 21-year-old self took it at face value, assuming he was as good as the other fellows I know. And once he showed his true colors, I really couldn't wrap my brain around the whole thing and believed all the excuses he made. And he was still occasionally nice enough to keep me believing that the 'old' him was in there and I could get him back. It took me a long time to realize the 'good' times were just a calculated part of the abuse.
Live and learn, I guess. I'm in a good place now. I love being captain of my own ship, and single parenthood is totally my jam. A new romantic partner (of any gender) isn't something I feel like I'm missing in life.
...it'd just be great if society at large would hold the deadbeat accountable for his legal obligations.
complaint/non-complaint combo: Caseworker contacted payroll for the ex's job; he's still employed, but there were some issues with the payroll system and that's probably why the county hasn't received the payment yet. I'm to let them know if nothing comes through in the next 7 business days. After we're already a week late. Thankfully I can absorb the delay and be okay, but so many people can't, and I think that's what ticks me off the most. I know how absolutely priviliged I am (relatively speaking) and just because I'll be all right doesn't make it all right. Not everyone has a fallback, and they shouldn't suffer just because they drew the short straw.
On the bright side, at least it's coming... eventually.
We went to a McDonald’s restaurant. The new lady who worked there seemed unable to add coffee to an order. But that was okay because they didn't give us what we ordered anyway.
As we departed, I noticed my car’s air conditioner seemed to be blowing cold air on one side and hot air on the other. It seems a cruel twist of fate that, after going to McDonald’s, I ended up being turned into a McDLT.
Complaint: This is a very trivial complaint, but I am flooded with free stuff. It's mostly all from other sites. We're talking hundreds of items. How does this stuff accumulate? I know, I see it, I press accept or download, repeat over time 'til it becomes an enormous glob of stuff. But still...
I visit some of it and remember it's looks pretty good but sorting through and installing it will still be a lot of work. Part of me wants to delete the lot. I suspect I'll delete some of it because I won't ever use it. I probably should just delete it all, though.

Thanks.
And I've been having similar thoughts. I've been looking at a lot of the stuff I snagged when I was first starting out because any asset was more than the nearly nothing I had. But now... I know I'll never use that couch (or whatever); I have better now, and they're easier to access because they're part of some set from Daz. So... is it worth it to keep it? Would it just be more effort than necessary to get rid of it?

I'm sorry about your messed up order - and I love the McDLT joke.
I spend a lot of time on the other side of a McDonald's register (it's my social security supplement). Sometimes I can't get a register to behave, and unfortunately there are some coworkers I can't get to do their jobs right, or at all. One of my friends is a crew trainer of my vintage and we de-stress by making geeky jokes about the horribleness of the job:
"Are we bringing lightsabers or thermal detonators tomorrow?"/"Both!"
"I think a vacation in Mordor would be pleasanter."/"Yes, let's book that vacay! And we should try hiring orcs, they do their jobs, unlike some people here."
"I hope the Starship Enterprise comes & beams me up tonight"/"Make them pick me up too, you know where I live."
@SilverGirl, I am so glad for you! It may be delayed a bit but you know it will happen. I always laughed at people who told me to make sure I had six months of expenses saved up, in case of issues. [This was generally when I was so broke I cancelled cable (and I was in an are with no TV antenna reception), stopped buying books/magazines, clothes for myself, restricted my food budget to bare minimun, etc...] just bought gas, and drove to and from work (100 miles a day in retirement). I was paying off credit cards, and other things and a mortgage. But the bills gradually got paid off. And then I started saving like a maniac. Still do. But when you have children at home it is really hard. Kids come first, always. Pets after. Or you will hear about it. So who has the money to put aside for a rainy day fund when you can't buy enough food?
@NylonGirl and @miladyderuni_173d399f47 - Yesterday I checked out on one of the older self-checkouts at my Target and fought with the screen to register my number of bags I brought and 'Garlic' (it kept typing letters/numbers other than I touched) and I was about ready to spit nails. After escaping Green Side Hell without causing a scene, I was walking down to Starbucks and the lady on Blue Side told me that her registers were all upgraded that morning and Green Side would be done (today). I just stared. And then my flatmate was late because he had to go through the training for the new systems at the end of his day. All this and a migraine from hell that never let up all day. I got out of there without embarrassing myself. And got home to find an email asking how my visit at the store went!
Good thing they didn't ask about Saturday when as I opened the freezer door to select a pizza, four others from the shelf above me fell out and just missed hitting my head. They were some of the big ones too. I ended up in Customer Returns to report it, never can find an employee on the floor during shift change. Sigh. It took them over 10 minutes to get a supervisor to respond. Yesterday that shelf was emptied of pizzas.
Dolly Parton has died. I don't know how much that will mean to some, but to an old Tennessee boy, it's very sad news. You don't even have to like the music to love Dolly.
Dolly Parton: No complaints at her. Good memories.
Non-complaint: Today's mini-adventure, went mostly as planned. Bus at 8:00. Breakfast at the long standing, locally famous breakfast restaurant in the middle of the city. Meh, biscuits & gravy not as good as at the hole-in-the-wall beanery in the decrepit mini-mall that I usually go to. So, that's been noted. Toddled down the hill (walked in drizzle but stood under the railroad overpass a few minutes 'till the drizzle stopped) to Tim Horton's to pick up two plain donuts & a blueberry muffin for home breakfasts. Noticed and pointed out a bee in the pastry display, watched the clown show trying to get it out. Toddled across the street to the medical center a half hour early. Cardiologist got me in, 20 minutes ahead of my appointment. Doctor is satisfied with my situation but ordered a couple of tests (of course he did, but they will be mini-adventures for a future date) I was done in the cardiologist's office a whole hour before my BFF was to pick me up for lunch. Waited outside in the sun, watching decrepit people come and go from the building. BFF picked me up as scheduled at 11:30. Lunch at Olive Garden on the far side of the city near the mall. I got their Lasagna Classico and had intended to bring half of it home, but it was soooo good that I can't believe I ate the whole thing. Also, had a margarita (Mmmm... margarita). Noted that next to the Olive Garden building, that a Popeye's chicken restaurant had opened finally. Stopped in and got two breasts to take home for future meals. Popped into the J.C. Penney's department store in the mall to shop for a light jacket for autumn to replace the ancient, stretched out, raggedy sweat-jacket that was 10 years old when I bought it in a yard sale, 18 years ago. Unfortunately, Penney's didn't have any jacket that I liked, was in my size, and could afford. So, it's back to Amazon. BFF drove me directly back home, we unloaded suitable gossip. Made plans for 60th high school reunion in mid-September. And I didn't have even one Uber bill to snarl over. Wheee... good day!
Complaint: While in J.C. Penney's I went into the fitting rooms to try on various things and as I entered a booth, the pressure difference slammed my fingers in the frame with the heavy door. Owwieeee!

NOOOOOO!!!!! Oh, that's awful! I'm not a country music fan, but she was a wonderful person. That makes me sad.

...agreed. As video tutorials go, his are among the best because he does take time to explain. and doesn't assume you already know basic steps when you first approach something new. The production level is also far better than many vids you find on YouTube, He is an excellent teacher who even helped me on occasion when I first dipped a toe in the water here 18 years ago.
My computer was off when I first heard the news of Dolly Parton. I could only moan "NO...."
At times during my life her music has meant so much to me, her recurring acts of charity that I often didn't hear about until later, and her love for her family and her husband.
Personal share: My late Mother had a great fondness for two musical artists - Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton.
Both of them grew up in extreme poverty like my Mother did. Mother liked to read autobiographies, so I made sure she got to read "Coal Miner's Daughter" and "Dolly: My Life and Other Unfinished Business".
She loved Sissy Spacek in "Coal Miner's Daughter", and Dolly in "9 to 5" and "Steel Magnolias".
Mother told me so many famous people claim they were poor, but Loretta and Dolly came from the same rural Appalachian poverty that she did. They actually were, as I hear said about lots of people who are actually not, "authentic".

@SilverGirl, I hope things improve for you.
@NylonGirl that's a funny way of looking at an annoying situation!
Dolly Parton:
No complaints at her.
Doctor is satisfied with my situation
but ordered a couple of tests (of course he did,
but they will be mini-adventures for a future date)
I was done in the cardiologist's office a whole hour before my BFF was to pick me up for lunch.
Dolly was awesomeness incarnate and made the world a better place. May her legacy live on forever.
Amen
Sad about Dolly. I'm not a country music fan, but she seemed a really nice and good person.
...+1

Thank you Ms Dolly. I will always love you.
